Magia Exedra Event - Prayers and Play Keep Sickness Away
Prayers and Play Keep Sickness Away is a New Year's Story Event in Puella Magi Madoka Magica Magia Exedra. It was released on January 1st 2026, alongside the release of 
Pluvia☆Neujahr, and was available until January 15th.
Story
On January 3rd Madoka wakes up early, as she plans to meet Iroha in Kamihama to practice hanetsuki (a traditional badminton game) for a ceremony at Mizuna Shrine, a ceremony which is held to pray for good health. Participants must be middle school students in pairs and Iroha invited Madoka because the other Mikazuki Villa girls are either too old, or invisible to non‑Magical Girls, or Felicia, who refused. Madoka accepts because her whole family caught colds over New Year’s and she wants a blessing for their health.
Madoka boards the train, but service is suspended due to an accident. Homura is on an earlier train that is still running and Madoka tells Homura to go ahead. Madoka arrives two hours late at 10 a.m. where Homura and the Mikazuki Villa girls greet her. They had changed their plans: instead of practicing near Mikazuki Villa, they will have bento lunches at a park near Mizuna Shrine and practice there.
Before practice, the group buys New Year’s lucky bags. Madoka’s bag contains grains and black beans (soapnuts). Suddenly, a goose approaches her, then more geese which proceed to then chase Madoka and peck at her bag, wanting the grain. Tsuruno grabs the bag and runs, soon aving the other girls joining into the chaos, until a worker leads the geese away, however the lucky bag ends up destroyed and Madoka’s bad luck seems to continue.
Iroha and Madoka practice Hanetsuki together, but they struggle with control. Yachiyo offers to train them and she plays against each, teaching them to aim and keep balance. After lunch, they hold a friendly tournament, where Yachiyo wins against Iroha, Madoka beats Homura and Felicia but loses to Yachiyo when her sandal strap breaks. Yachiyo fixes it temporarily and goes home to get spare sandals for her.
The group goes to Mizuna Shrine and Iroha requests a purification ritual for Madoka to remove her bad luck. The priest performs a simple cleansing and Madoka feels relieved from it.
The shrine announces that this year’s selection for the ceremony will not be a tournament, and instead, pairs must keep a rally for 30 seconds and then do an interview. Madoka and Iroha pass the rally easily. In the interview, Madoka says she first wanted to pray for her family’s health, but after seeing many people at the shrine, she now wants good health for everyone. Iroha says her little sister Ui was born with health problems, so she knows health is not guaranteed. They are selected to perform the ceremony.
Before the ceremony, the shrine maiden shows them the special shuttlecock made from a soapnut (a nut whose kanji means “child without illness”). The box contains a completely ruined shuttlecock and the spare is also ruined. The shrine maiden goes to consult the priest, as the ceremony may be canceled. Many spectators have gathered, including Asuka, Karin, Emiri, Rika, Ren, and Hinano.
Madoka does not want to disappoint everyone and she suddenly remembers the black nuts from her lucky bag. Tsuruno looks up photos online and confirms the nuts are soapnuts. Iroha recalls making shuttlecocks in elementary school and says she knows the process. Felicia kept feathers from the geese that chased Madoka too and the priest lets them use an office and tools. There, they have a hand drill but no clamp, so the shrine maiden finds an old vise. Felicia and Tsuruno try drilling holes; Felicia breaks one soapnut, Tsuruno pierces through. Meanwhile, Madoka succeeds with the vise and Iroha and Sana bind feathers. Madoka applies glue but uses too much on the first try. They succeed with the second attempt, and when they test the shuttlecock in a nearby park, it flies well.
The mayor’s speech is delayed by the train suspension, giving them time. The ceremony begins and Madoka and Iroha keep a steady rally. They reach 97 hits, but at 99, the wind blows the shuttlecock away and Madoka runs and hits it back, reaching 100 hits. The crowd cheers and the priest says it has been years since a 100‑shot rally.
On the train back, Madoka falls asleep and Homura wakes her when they approach their stop. Madoka thinks about the day, and how everything that seemed like bad luck actually helped make the ceremony a success. She will tell her family that she prayed for their good health and she believes everyone who watched the ceremony, and everyone across the globe, can have a healthy and happy year as well.
