A Magical Girl (魔法少女 Mahō Shōjo) is a being (usually a female human)[note 1] who has made a contract with an Incubator (usually Kyubey) in exchange for a wish.
Mechanics
Ancient Era
Please refrain from reading if you are not yet familiar with all the latest media released.
In an ancient era prior to the Witch system, a girl's soul is extracted into a stone-shaped Core.[verification needed][observed] Because Magical Girls in this era are convent sisters, these Cores are usually housed inside a small bell worn around the neck. Once the Core is filled with curses, the Magical Girl is turned into a Demon (魔物 Mamono)[verification needed][unofficial tl.]. Because Demons do not drop any items capable of purifying Cores, Magical Girls typically pray and call Marguerite's name when a purification is needed.[observed]
Witch Era
"On this planet, you call females who have yet to become adults 'girls'. It makes sense then, since you'll eventually become Witches, you should be called 'Magical Girls'." — Kyubey, Madoka Magica Episode 8.
Upon contracting, a girl's soul is extracted and materialized into a Soul Gem[1], usually without the girl's knowledge.[2] In exchange for having their wish granted, Magical Girls are tasked with a duty of fighting Witches.[3] Over time, a Soul Gem accumulates curses and despair, and must be purified through a Grief Seed, which is occasionally dropped after defeating a Witch.[3] Magical Girls can transform between their normal and Magical Girl form at will.
Witch Transformation

After a Magical Girl's Soul Gem accumulates too many curses, it will transform into a Grief Seed, and the girl will transform into a Witch, a fact Kyubey hides from the Magical Girls as to not discourage them.[4] The Witch takes on a new form made out of magic, leaving the human body of the Magical Girl soulless[5], sometimes even going as far as to destroy it.[6] Kyubey considers this transformation the ultimate purpose of a Magical Girl, as it is the thing that releases energy into the universe, pushing entropy further.[5]
Doppel System
In the Magia Record Universe, the Magical Girls were able to create the Automatic Purification System, a system that frees them from the normal duty and fate of Magical Girls.[7] Instead of transforming into Witches when their Soul Gems gather curses, they release a Doppel instead, a smaller Witch tied to a part of their bodies.[7][8] This transformation isn't permanent, and because the Doppel uses the curses from the Soul Gem to form, it also uses them up, meaning that it disappears after some time and leaves the Soul Gem fully clean.[8] This system is limited to one Universe, as it managed to work under very rare circumstances.[9]
Law of Cycles Era
"She's gone, the Law of Cycles says it has to be this way." — Mami Tomoe, Madoka Magica Episode 12.
After Madoka Kaname makes the wish to erase every Witch before they are born across all of time, she becomes a goddess and creates a new universe with a new rule, called the Law of Cycles by Magical Girls.[10] In this new universe, Magical Girls no longer turn into Witches, as Madoka takes their soul and body away before they can.[10] Because the universe always requires balance, Magical Girls now fight Wraiths instead of Witches.[10] Similar to Witches, Wraiths drop Grief Cubes when they are defeated, which can be used to purify Soul Gems.[10] This system is not as efficient in collecting energy.[11]
Afterlife

After being taken by the Law of Cycles, the Magical Girls don't just stop existing.[11] Ultimate Madoka can bring them back to earth, but usually only with a purpose.[11] When a Magical Girl is brought back to earth, she has more abilities than she had before being taken into the Law of Cycles.[11] These new abilities are tied to their Witch forms, such as being able to turn into their Witch form, summon the Witch as a separate being (that is presumably still controlled by the Magical Girl) and summon their Familiars to help them.[11] The reason for why these new powers are tied to the Witches even though they're not supposed to exist in this new universe, is because the Witch system is still there, it's just overwritten by the Law of Cycles.[11] This is why Kyubey could still make Homura Akemi turn into a Witch by just separating her from the Law of Cycles' reach.[11]

Soul Gem

A Soul Gem (ソウルジェム Sōru Jemu) is a gem birthed from the Magical Girl contract. It is the Magical Girl's literal soul, materialized by an Incubator. It's the source of a Magical Girl's magic and proof that she is a Magical Girl.
Physical contact with the Soul Gem is required for a Magical Girl to transform. When not transformed, a Magical Girl's Soul Gem typically takes its default "egg" form, or may be turned into a ring at will to be worn for easier transportation. When in ring form, the band will display its owner's name written in Witch Runes. When transformed, the gem will change appearance and become incorporated into its owner's costume. The gem's costumed form most often takes on the appearance of one of the two symbols, which may or may not be the same symbol repeated, on the top and bottom/center of the gem in its "egg" form (e.g. Mami Tomoe's becomes a flower, Rena Minami's becomes a music note, etc.).
- See also Lists of Soul Gems for lists of Soul Gem designs.
Connection with the Body
Since the creation of a Core or a Soul Gem requires the Incubator to extract the soul out of the contractee's body, the body becomes nothing more than a vessel for the Magical Girl.[12] To keep the body healthy and living, magic is subconsciously used.[citation needed] It's possible for the Magical Girl to "dissociate" from her body and stop feeling pain.[12]
A Magical Girl must remain within 100 meters of their Soul Gem or their connection will be broken, and the girl will instantly lose consciousness.[2] If this connection is broken, it will only be re-established once physical contact between them has been made again.[2] Once separated within 100 meters, a Magical Girl's body has approximately 48 hours until it begins to decay.[13] While transformed, a Magical Girl may be separated from their Soul Gem and retain their life and magic provided the distance between them does not exceed 100 meters[14]; however, if a Magical Girl is not already transformed and is separated from their gem while remaining within proper distance of it, they will be unable to transform[15] and, potentially, unable to use their unique magic. The connection between a Magical Girl and their Soul Gem can be broken by another using magic while still within 100 meters of each other.[16] while still within 100 meters of each other.
It's possible for multiple Soul Gems to inhabit one body.[16] They can then control the body in unison or separately.[16] Their transformation can be separate, with one of the Magical Girls active at a time[16], but they can also both transform, their Magical Girl outfit will be a fusion of both of their outfits and they are able to use both of their powers at once[17], though this probably requires the souls to be very in-sync. It's unknown how this would happen, and currently the only example is Souju.
Powers and Abilities
Magical Girls all possess similar abilities that exist to help them in battles, this magic usage is what causes their Soul Gems to become tainted. These include:
- Physical Enhancement: All Magical Girls exhibit superhuman strength, agility, and healing.[citation needed] They are also able to shut off their sense of pain during battle at will, though this hinders their reaction time.[12] Magical Girls may also choose whether to use their magic to make themselves completely immune to mundane illnesses, and some choose not to so that they may retain some semblance of humanity.[citation needed] They are capable of healing physical ailments such as poor eyesight[18], weak constitutions or immune systems[citation needed], or physical disabilities like paralysis[citation needed]. Great feats of magic may leave a Magical Girl disabled and unable to cure themselves.[citation needed] These physical enhancements also include the ability to jump to incredible heights and survive immense falls.[citation needed] However, Magical Girls may still retain severe injuries from magical opponents that may leave them in a hospital for prolonged periods of time[1], comatose[citation needed], or on the brink of death[19]. Such injuries, if left unhealed by another Magical Girl and without unique healing magic, will continuously and rapidly darken the injured girl's Soul Gem to heal, and purifying it with Grief Seeds will not necessarily speed up their own healing or awaken them.[citation needed]

- Magic Detection: Soul Gems are capable of detecting the magic of other magical beings.[3] The gems glow when there are Witches or Familiars nearby.[3] Witches leave behind a trail of magic, each unique and distinguishable from each other, which Magical Girls can detect and follow to find the Witch and defeat it.[3] The magical signatures of Uwasa cannot be detected, even in the area it exists in, unless the rumor it embodies has been successfully invoked and it subsequently appears to fulfill or protect it.[citation needed] The magic of Uwasa is noted to feel very different from that of Witches.[citation needed]
- Telepathy: Magical Girls are able to use telepathy to communicate with each other nonverbally and over large distances or through obstacles.[citation needed] Kyubey can use himself as a relay through which non-contracted girls can communicate with each other and Magical Girls.[3] Magical Girls do not require Kyubey to use this ability amongst themselves[citation needed], but telepathy can be negated by some Witch Labyrinths.[citation needed]
While most Magical Girls who aren't transformed are unable to use their magic, they still use up a bit of it to sustain their body involuntarily in their daily lives. However, even without transforming they can still use their Soul Gems in a limited fashion to perform magic. For example, the Soul Gem can be used:
- To summon a magical weapon still attached to the Soul Gem.[4]
- Imbue magic upon an object to enhance it.[1]
- To heal any form of injuries on themselves or others.[citation needed]
- Adjust a body's ability.[citation needed]
- Preserve a dead body from decomposition.[5]
Learnable Magical Skills
In addition to the instinctual applications of magic, Magical Girls can learn to use their magic in various other techniques:
- Protective Barriers: Magical Girls are able to learn to use protective magic in the form of barriers or shields.[citation needed] For example, in Kaoru Maki's Magia Record side story, Natsuki Utsuho's desire to protect her created defensive magic that saved her from a Witch, a power she did not know she could use until then.[citation needed]

- Concealed Messages: In the Magia Record Anime, many Wings of the Magius symbols were hidden in front of Alina's posters.[20] They only became visible to those who'd apply magic to their sight, such as by looking through the Soul Gem ring, or by applying it directly in one's eyes or glasses.[20] Madoka and Homura both sensed and knew how to view these messages[20], implying that the means to view them is easy to learn even if the means of creating them isn't.
- Magic Imbuement: Magical Girls are able to imbue ordinary objects with magic.[3] This can enhance their original functions, change the object to a certain degree, or allow them to be used in combat.[3]

- Transmission: Some Magical Girls have been shown to use imbued items to hold messages, and as direct methods of communication. Yuuri could imbue a message in one of her projectile arrows[21], and Mifuyu Azusa was able to imbue a piece of paper with a holographic map, and then use it as a direct method of vocal two-way communication between herself and the people in possession of the map.[22]
- Storage/Hammerspace: A seemingly easy skill for Magical Girls to learn is that they're able to store items in a personal hammerspace of theirs.[citation needed] Most of them do so through their Magical Girl costumes, or their weapons, but it seems they can learn to do it through any part of their body, or directly through magic seals.[citation needed] It is unknown what happens to the unseen stored items if the girl dies, or turns into a Witch, but seeing as anything abandoned in a Labyrinth also disappears when the Labyrinth fades, it is likely those items would also disappear.[citation needed]
- Presence Concealment: Experienced Magical Girls can learn to conceal themselves, as well as traces of their magic, from the detection of others.[citation needed] They can even be trained to be undetectable to the point of not even Kyubey being able to detect their magic signature.[citation needed]
Wishes and Unique Magic

Magical Girls are also granted unique, personalized powers based on the wish they made to become Magical Girls.[1] As with the way wishes may be granted, the powers bestowed by them can be interpreted in many different ways.
In most cases, the unique magic a girl's wish grants is based on some interpretation of the wish and its wording, creating a mostly direct parallel between the two.[1] In other cases however, a girl's unique magic is shown to be able to differ rather significantly from the wording of her wish, and be based on the intent or background of the wish instead.[citation needed] In rarer cases a girl's unique magic seemingly has nothing to do with the wish she made[citation needed], possibly for the sake of more unique powers in the stories.
In some cases, when a Magical Girl subconsciously rejects her wish, she loses the ability to use whatever power her wish granted her.[citation needed] Additionally, a Magical Girl may still retain access to her unique magic even if she does not remember her wish, partially or entirely.[citation needed]
- See also #Coordination below, for unique powers that act more like curses.
Karmic Destiny

A Magical Girl's power and potential are tied to her "karmic destiny".[23] People like queens and messiahs have greater karmic weight than average girls, so it can be surmised that karmic destiny relates to how much influence a girl has on the world and people around her.[23] Naturally, this strength also applies to the future strength of a Magical Girl's Witch form.[23]
Some wishes may be "impossible" to grant if they outweigh the karmic weight of the girl making the wish;[24] such a wish can still be granted, but will come at a significant cost to the girl, such as being unable to handle power.[24] Another instance shows Rion Yuzuki's wish creating a separate timeline, because she lacked the necessary karmic destiny to completely undo a fixed point in time.[25]
Making a wish for someone else seems to increase that persons own karmic destiny, as seen when Homura's repeated time loops centered around Madoka Kaname, Madoka's karmic destiny was increased with each loop[23], and Tart's incredible power being the result of Riz Hawkwood's wish for the existence of a great hero, resulting in the entire karmic weight of all of France centering on her.[26]
Connect

Connect (コネクト Konekuto) is a magical skill first shown in -Rebellion- but properly introduced and expanded upon in the Magia Record Anime. It appears that the skill can be made stronger to Magical Girls who have been adjusted by a Coordinator[27], signified by the Connect symbol appearing when the magic is applied[28], however all Magical Girls have the power to some degree.[11] Mitama Yakumo describes it as a power "Magical Girls never knew they had before" that is brought to the fore[27], likely meaning that it takes time too learn properly without the aid of a Coordinator.
Through Connect, activated by direct contact, Magical Girls are able to share their elemental magic with one another to perform powerful magical attacks with a lot of variety even for the same two participants[28], such as Momoko Togame, who has fire magic, utilizing Rena Minami's water magic[28], or Rena utilizing Kaede Akino's forest magic.[27] It can also mix both participants' weapons, sometimes in very unconventional fusions.[29] If a Magical Girl is inexperienced at using Connect, their partner may become overwhelmed or underwhelmed, presumably either because of its strength or some lack of control over the sharing.[30] It is worth clarifying that Connecting does not let Magical Girls use each other's unique magic, only their elemental magic and weapons.

A Connect can also be used to free a Magical Girl from the control of outside forces, or banish them from the person altogether, such as an Uwasa[22], or from their own inner darkness in the form of a Doppel[31]. To do so, one must visualize the true personality of the person in their head while using Connect on them.[22] However, if the one using Connect doesn't know the person they're using it on, the process will be unsuccessful and damage the host instead, as this application of Connect requires to know someone in a much more intimate and sincere fashion.[22] It is unknown if Connect can break someone out of different types of mind control magic, or whether it only applies to when someone is being controlled by an active present entity. It is also unknown whether Connect can be used on non-Magical Girls to similarly free them of other forces' control.
Coordination

Coordination is a magical skill used by special Magical Girls, called Coordinators, that allows them to directly affect a Magical Girl's Soul Gem.[citation needed] This is usually done to enhance a customer's magic and make them stronger[citation needed], but can be used adversely, to simply stabilize them[citation needed] or even more minimal acts such as changing their magic signature.[citation needed] This power grants Coordinators direct access to their customer's memories as well as entering their psyche.[citation needed] It is also possible to coordinate many girls at once, which results in them having their minds share a common mindscape.[citation needed] Parts of Witches are often used in Coordination as well[citation needed], however this may result in the Witch whose parts were used to become difficult to detect by the Magical Girls who were Coordinated with them.[citation needed]
Coordinators can also modify or entirely change a Magical Girl's outfit, such as when Mitama Yakumo changed Homura Akemi's[citation needed] and Kyoko Sakura's outfits into swimsuits[32]; in the latter case, it was noted that Mitama was the only one capable of returning Kyoko's outfit to its original form.[32] Also in Kyoko's case, Mitama was able to bestow Kyoko with the ability to swim, which she otherwise completely lacked.[32] The results of Coordination depend both on the Coordinator and the one being Coordinated, most clearly seen and acknowledged when Kuroe's swimsuit was similar to Iroha Tamaki's due to her adoration.[33] When a Magical Girl who is Coordinated has a strong sense of purpose, it will also change her unique magic accordingly, whereas when the Coordination is only superficial, the unique magic won't be affected.[34]

A Magical Girl can only learn Coordination if her wish was one out of or that causes despair/ruin, rather than for or out of hope — in essence, a wish that was more like a curse.[citation needed] Such wishes bestow destructive powers that are mostly or entirely ineffective against Witches, but can weaken the power of other Magical Girls[citation needed]; thus Coordination is purposefully using this destructive magic wrong, so that it strengthens Magical Girls instead.[citation needed] Doing so is described as difficult and consumes much more magic than using it properly[citation needed], so those who survive to learn Coordination offer their services in exchange for Grief Seeds collected by their customers.[citation needed] Due to the similarities of their magic to that of Witches, is noted that Coordinators have a lower rate of effectiveness when fighting against Witches compared to other Magical Girls.[citation needed]
There remains a mystery as to why some wishes create Coordinator Magical Girls while others don't (several Magical Girls like Kanae Yukino and Hanna Sarasa have wished for the complete erasure of someone, yet displayed no abilities of Coordination), as Livia states that all Magical Girls make wishes rooted in hope no matter how despicable they may be, and yet have normal magic.[citation needed] It should be noted however, that many Magical Girls have powers which allow them to perform many of the things a Coordinator can do, such as strengthen Magical Girls, weaken them, view their memories or even change their outfits.[citation needed]

Weapons
Trivia
- The shape that Soul Gems take, resembles that of Fabergé eggs. This could be an intentional design choice, since Soul Gems can be said to be "eggs" that "hatch" into Grief Seeds.
Observations
- While assigning a real-life gem to liken to Soul Gems is impossible, as no known gemstone is able to have the same color variety, it is possible to make a few educated guesses on the other scientific properties of Soul Gems.
- Crystal habit is the natural shape a gem grows into when it has enough space. Prismatic habit forms long pillars like tourmaline, equant habit forms roughly cube-like or roundish shapes like garnet, tabular habit makes flat plates like ruby and massive habit has no visible crystal faces and the gem looks like a rounded or blobby lump, such as jasper or turquoise. Soul Gems perfectly fit within the massive habit category.
- Soul Gems have been shown to sink in water, so it can be verified that their specific gravity is greater than 1.0 (the density of water), which is also true with most other gems. Further determining the specific gravity of Soul Gems, which is how heavy a gem feels compared to water, isn't possible, but they appear to be similar to heavy gems in this aspect.
- Soul Gems haven't been shown to be scratched, meaning they would rank highly on the Mohs hardness scale. Hardness is a surface property determined by atomic bond strength and the scale runs from 1 (talc, easily scratched by a fingernail) to 10 (diamond, cannot be scratched by any other natural material). With this in mind, Soul Gems would be deemed to have excellent hardness.
- The pattern with which they break is very irregular, meaning Soul Gems have no cleavage (the tendency of a gem to split cleanly along flat, weak planes inside its crystal structure). Fracture is the property for how a gem breaks when it does not follow cleavage planes, thus a Soul Gem's fracture type would also be categorized as uneven.
- Luster describes how light reflects off the gem's surface. Vitreous luster is glass-like and the most common, adamantine is diamond-like and very brilliant, resinous looks like honey, and pearly shows a soft, rainbow-like sheen. With the exception of Yu's Soul Gem, which is either vitreous or adamantine, all other Soul Gems have been shown to be resinous. Aditionally, transparency tells how much light passes through, so transparent gems are see-through like glass, translucent gems let light through but blur the image, and opaque gems let no light through at all. Yusa Yumeno's Soul Gem would be transluscent until it is polluted, while other Soul Gems would likely be on the range between translucent and opaque.
- Usually, most Soul Gems have one color, with the exception of Uwasa Mikoto's which has two. However, as her gem doesn't actually change color based on the different angles, it is not actually dichromic, but simply multicolored.
- Refractive index measures how much a gem bends light and in this aspect, despite their own inner light shining through, Soul Gems would have a low refractive index as light would not pass through them. The exception to this would again be Yu's glass-like Soul Gem.
- Importantly, toughness or tenacity is a gem's resistance to breaking, chipping, or crushing. This is different from hardness, as a brittle gem like diamond is very hard but can chip or shatter if hit hard. A tough gem like jade is softer but very difficult to break, even with a hammer. Soul Gems can be broken, but the toughness of a Soul Gem seems relatively high in this case as well, comparable to jade, as only acts of Magical Girl strength, or firearms have been the only tools shown to have broken them.
- Based on these properties, the closest real-world gem to a typical Soul Gem would be jade (specifically nephrite or jadeite). Jade shares the massive habit, complete lack of cleavage, uneven to splintery fracture, and exceptional toughness that makes it nearly unbreakable without extreme force. Its hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale means it resists scratching well, though it cannot compete with diamond. Jade also sinks in water and falls into the heavy specific gravity range. The main mismatch is luster since Soul Gems are described as resinous, while jade is greasy to vitreous. If the resinous inner glow is the most important visual trait, then opal or amber would be better matches for luster and low refractive index, but they are far too soft and brittle. So structurally, jade is the closest match, but no single real gem perfectly combines jade’s toughness with opal’s resinous light, not to mention the color variety unseen in any gemstone in the world.
Etymology
- Magical Girls are also known by other names, such as Diviner (巫 kannagi)[unofficial tl.][35], Battle Shamaness (戦神子 ikusamiko)[unofficial tl.][36], or even names of mythological creatures, such as Rakshasi (ラクシャーシー)[37].
Notes
- ↑ As shown in Kazumi Magica Chapter 22: Kazumi Magica, the requirement to become a Magical Girl is possesing a Soul, not being human.
In Null Magical Girl Breaking: Homo magica, Kyubey searches through Terminus' inhabitants of various intelligent species and non-Earthly places of origin, indicating he is open to making contracts with other species, but fails to find any that would satisfy his criteria.
In Null Magical Girl Climax: Which is the Path to the Inner Universe?, Kosane explains that Homo sapiens is the only species that Kyubey found that could function as Magical Girls, as even other species of human, such as Homo neanderthalis, lacked the ability to imagine potential events that lead to the capability of perceiving and using magic. From Homo sapiens evolved a new species also capable of using magic, Homo magica, which exclusively reproduces asexually and thus cannot be considered female or male.
