Side Story
Iroha Tamaki's Side Story
Iroha goes to Mitama Yakumo, ready to pay Grief Seeds for magic strengthening. Mitama jokes that Iroha has to take off her clothes, but Iroha says she won't fall for that again. As Mitama uses her magic, Iroha thinks she still can't get used to it. She feels like something is throbbing inside her body, and sees glimpses of memories. Meanwhile, Mitama starts talking about food. She then asks Iroha if she saw something weird. Before Iroha can really answer, Momoko Togame arrives. Mitama says she's being rude, but Momoko says since Mitama often makes her act as a lookout, she's basically an employee. Momoko asks how the treatment is going, but Mitama says it's not done yet. Momoko realizes that Mitama hasn't had lunch. As it turns out, Mitama's treatments don't go well when she's hungry.
Iroha asks if this is why she saw Hamburg steak. Mitama says that's exactly right, and the three girls go to have lunch. Mitama invites them into the kitchen and starts cooking. Iroha quickly learns that Mitama is not merely a bad chef, but also dangerous. She begs Mitama to put the knife she's holding away. Iroha asks if Momoko can cook. Momoko says she's in charge of cooking at her house, and asks if Iroha can cook as well. Iroha explains she started cooking for her younger sister Ui Tamaki. While there weren't many things Ui could eat, Iroha cooked in order to help her. She says that Hamburg is a dish with a lot of memories for her.
Iroha thinks back to when Ui was about to leave the hospital. She asks the doctor if she can bring something for Ui, and the doctor says it's alright. Ui asks Iroha for Hamburg. Later, Iroha makes the steak at her home. Since she has ingredients left over, she decides to bake a cake as well. However, she ends up burning the Hamburg. Once she returns to the hospital, Iroha presents Ui the cake, but then their mom reveals she brought the Hamburg as well. Iroha asks her mother why she brought the Hamburg here, and her mother answers that it's because Iroha went through the trouble to make it. Despite Iroha's concerns, Ui enjoys her food.
Back in the present, Iroha finishes telling her friends this story. Iroha says that Ui would always turn her family's frowns into smiles. Mitama exaggeratedly cries, to Momoko's annoyance. Mitama then realizes her meal is burning. When Mitama takes it out Iroha is surprised to see it, but doesn't explain why. Momoko says to dig in, and Iroha should do her best to look for Ui. Iroha thinks Ui was always someone who would make everyone smile.
Some time later, Felicia Mitsuki returns to the house she shares with Iroha and Yachiyo Nanami. Tsuruno Yui is also there. It turns out Felicia went to see an exhibit for "Hugegon Ball" (a reference to the famous anime Dragonball), and got souvenir keychains for everyone. Felicia is hungry, so Iroha offers to cook for her. However, Felicia says Iroha's food is flavorless and suggests eating out tonight. The group agrees, and goes to Tsuruno's family's Chinese restaurant. While Iroha and Yachiyo think the food is average, Felicia claims she really likes it. Yachiyo wonders if it's because of the free meals Felicia gets from working there.
As they eat, Yachiyo thinks the food's unchanged. Felicia says it's really good, and Iroha nervously agrees. Tsuruno says that her restaurant used to be really famous, and that there are actually famous politicians in her family tree. Felicia starts laughing. She explains it's because even though Tsuruno's family was involved in politics, they're now running a Chinese restaurant. Tsuruno suddenly gets sad and runs off. Iroha scolds Felicia for her words. Felicia is surprised, because when Tsuruno gets mad at her she usually yells. Felicia says she was just trying to be honest, but Iroha claims that saying whatever you want without considering another person's feelings is dishonest. Felicia runs off crying. Iroha is shocked and apologizes to Yachiyo, but Yachiyo admits she felt the same way.
Felicia feels bad about Tsuruno getting hurt, and admits she wants to be with her friends. She unconsciously goes to Tsuruno's favorite park, and finds Tsuruno there. Felicia immediately apologizes and tells Felicia she wasn't trying to say her family was lame. She then claims Tsuruno's family is like something from a manga. Tsuruno then starts to laugh. Tsuruno says she really loves Felicia own personal sense, and that she likes Felicia. Iroha and Yachiyo then arrive. Tsuruno apologizes to the girls, and Iroha apologizes to Felicia. Felicia then collapses from hunger. The group decides to finish their meal. Iroha thinks she was surprised by her own lecture to Felicia.
Sometime later, Tsuruno and Felicia arrive at Yachiyo's house and are greeted by Iroha, Yachiyo, and Sana Futaba. After eating dinner, Tsuruno invites the girls to a training camp. Felicia explains that Asuka Tatsuki is holding a magical girl training camp at her family's dojo. Yachiyo passes on the camp. Sana thinks that Asuka was pushy and kinda scared her, so she also declines. Iroha says she's not interested. Yachiyo says the "carnivorous group" of Felicia and Tsuruno will go to the camp while the "vegetarian group" will stay and watch the house. Sana imagines Tsuruno and Felicia as cavewomen and starts laughing.
That weekend, Tsuruno and Felicia leave for the training camp. As she prepares dinner, Iroha finds she used too much food. Later Yachiyo hurries out of the shower before realizing that there's no-one who needs to use it after her. Sana says that the drama show they usually watch starts at ten, but Tsuruno's not there to watch it with them. The girls watch it anyway, and find it's not as fun without Tsuruno and Felicia. At the training camp, Asuka says the day's training is over and tells the girls they have to make their own dinner. Felicia wonders if Asuka is a masochist for training that hard all the time. Asuka tells her not to whisper behind her back, and she's not a masochist.
It turns out Momoko and her teammates Kaede Akino and Rena Minami are at the camp as well. As the girls prepare dinner, Tsuruno accidentally refers to Rena as Yachiyo. Felicia says it's like when a student calls the teacher "mom". Felicia then realizes that after dinner, they don't have to play rock-paper-scissors to figure out who makes tea. That night, neither Felicia nor Tsuruno can sleep, and decide to duel each other. Afterward, Felicia says that if Yachiyo was here she'd be mad. Felicia claims it's good because they can play as much as they want, but Tsuruno asks if she really thinks that.
The next day, Iroha, Yachiyo, and Sana expect the two girls to return from the training camp, and decide to prepare hot pot for everyone. As they go shopping for groceries, the girls realize they know exactly what to get for Felicia and Tsuruno. Iroha thinks she knows practically everything about her friends. She believes that all those things are precious to her, like jewels. She wonders if that's what you would call a bond. As the girls return home, they bump into Tsuruno and Felicia. They say they left the camp a bit early because they thought the others would be lonely. The girls leave together to have dinner. Iroha narrates that if two people are gone, then it feels like something's missing. She welcomes them home.
Costume Stories
Iroha Tamaki's Costume Stories
Having bought a new swimsuit, Iroha thinks about putting away her old one. However, she is reluctant to do so due to the memories she associates with it. In a flashback, Tsuruno invites everyone to go to the beach. Iroha says she doesn't have a swimsuit. Yachiyo says she saw one when she was cleaning. Iroha says it doesn't really look good on her, and admits her classmates pressured her into buying it. Iroha narrates that when her classmates went to the beach, she stayed home.
Yachiyo says that if Iroha is uncomfortable, they should go to the beach another time. Felicia offers to take a look at the bathing suit. Yachiyo says she's being ridiculous, but then Sana says she'd like to see it. Iroha decides to show them the swimsuit. Felicia says it just looks normal, and Tsuruno says it suits Iroha. Sana also says it looks good. Finally, Yachiyo says it looks good on her.
Because of what her friends said, Iroha started to think the swimsuit was cute. She realizes that she only hated the swimsuit because her classmates only invited her to the beach to even out their numbers. Later, Iroha plays with her friends at the beach, thinking of making fun memories.
Iroha’s had many memories of Christmas, but one of them is the time she helped with the cake shop. She was helping Momoko Togame, Kaede Akino, and Rena Minami with selling Christmas Cakes, but at that time they were wearing Santa Claus costumes. When a customer came up to the table to check out the cakes, Rena had gotten him to not only try it but purchase a cake as well. Despite her demeanor, Rena was actually quite good at getting people to buy cakes from them. However something seemed to be the matter with Kaede, and when Momoko asked her about it Kaede ended up pulling Iroha aside for a minute to talk to her. She noticed that Rena had gone full saleswoman on them, but she felt like Iroha could be doing more to bring out more of her personality. Since Kaede had a lot of customer service experience, she became Iroha’s coach and helped to instruct her.
Since Rena’s personality came off so strongly, Kaede suggested they take a softer approach with Iroha’s character. When Iroha asked her how they could do that, Kaede had the bright idea of adding “nyun” to the end of Iroha’s words. Momoko and Iroha are surprised by this sudden turn and both of them point out that nyun isn’t even a word. But Kaede insists it’s her idea and even teaches Iroha how to make the sound at the end of her sentences (sounding suspiciously like the fuyuu sound that Kaede herself makes). Iroha initially refuses but Kaede pouts and in the end has her way.
When the next customer approached them to check out the Christmas cakes, Iroha greeted him with a “Nyu, nyun!” Despite ending her sentences with nyun, this only caused the customer to get confused and leave without buying anything. Iroha doesn’t get it either but Kaede tells her to try again with the next customer. A woman this time, she is also utterly confused by the odd speech pattern and leaves without buying anything as does the next customer. Kaede pulls Iroha aside once more and admits her idea was a failure. Both Iroha and Momoko agree it was pretty embarrassing. Rena pipes up and tells them she shouldn’t be the only one doing all the work so Momoko asks Iroha if she can still try again and get her motivation back. Iroha pulls it back together and surprisingly they were able to sell all the Christmas cakes. Looking back on it, Iroha had a pretty good time nyun.
Iroha and Sana prepare a hot pot for "Luxury Day", where Yachiyo let's them eat hot pot and ice cream. The girls gather ingredients, but Iroha nearly forgets the ice cream. Sana wants strawberry milk flavor, but worries it's too expensive. Iroha says it will be alright if they get Yachiyo her favorite flavor, matcha (basically green tea leaves). Iroha says she'll try plain vanilla.
Later, the girls enjoy the hot pot, and Iroha brings out the ice cream. The others are surprised to find it's high class ice cream. Felicia is overjoyed. Yachiyo is alright with it, since they do need to treat themselves once in a while. Iroha reveals she got Tsuruno grape flavored ice cream, and Felicia cookies and cream (because it looks like a cow). Everyone is happy. Iroha wishes these special days could last forever.
Upon returning home, Yachiyo finds the room is so clean it blinds her. Yachiyo wonders if she's entered the wrong house, or if she's dreaming. Suddenly Iroha arrives wearing a maid uniform. Iroha says she wants to pay Yachiyo back for her hospitality. Yachiyo says she doesn't understand the maid uniform, but then realizes that Kanagi Izumi must have suggested it. A flashback shows that Iroha did ask Kanagi how to repay Yachiyo. Iroha explained she borrowed a maid uniform from the cafe Kanagi works at. Yachiyo says she could have just dressed normally since her thoughts are what counts.
Yachiyo wants to do the remaining chores, but it turns out Iroha did them all. Yachiyo is moved, but finds she can't relax. Iroha then serves Yachiyo tea and cakes. Yachiyo asks Iroha if she wants any, but Iroha declines since she's Yachiyo's maid right now. Yachiyo tries to enjoy herself, but Iroha's staring keeps her from calming down. Yachiyo gets an idea and tries the cake, calling it delicious. She then asks Iroha to try it. Iroha relents and says she'll have a bite.
Yachiyo says that since she ate her master's food, Iroha is fired. Iroha says she was led into it by Yachiyo, but Yachiyo says that having Iroha serve her felt so stiff. She admits she's used to relationships where people understand each other, and asks Iroha to just do things she usually does. Iroha says she understands, and "resigns". She then makes tea for herself and Yachiyo.
Iroha's mother and father were working abroad and had planned to be back in Japan by the end of the year, so Iroha was hoping to spend New Year's with them. However, she soon received an e-mail from them that they'd have to stay abroad longer due to a sudden job assignment. Iroha sighs in disappointment since she'd been hoping to see them again. She figures her mother must be equally disappointed to not be able to spend time with Iroha. She then receives a second e-mail from her mother informing her she had mailed to her a gift she had gotten for Iroha. A few days later a package arrived at Mikazuki Villa. Felicia tells her to hurry up and open it while Sana asks if it isn't an early Christmas gift. Iroha opens it to find a brand new kimono with a drawstring purse. Although everyone agreed the kimono was beautiful, Iroha couldn't help feeling a little sad since she couldn't see her parents even if it was something that couldn't be helped because of how busy they were. She had even begun to feel lonely because she thought her parents were too busy to even think of her. She smiles and brightens up as she now knows that her parents had always been thinking of her.
Since her parents sent it specially for her, Yachiyo insists Iroha wear the kimono for New Year's. Iroha agrees and can't wait to send them a photo of her all dressed up in it. Iroha worries she won't be able to find a kimono store to help her get dressed up, especially with how busy they are during the New Year's, but Yachiyo offers to help her with the dressing. Yachiyo's grandmother had taught her a long time ago so she knows how to put on a kimono. Iroha happily accepts the offer and on New Year's day the group heads to Mizuna shrine. Iroha asks Sana to take her picture so she can send it to her mom and Sana is more than happy to help. They ended up taking a ton of group photos so Iroha ended up sending lots of photos to her mom. Her parents thought she looked great in the photos while her mom regretted not being able to see it in person. Iroha says it's okay since she promises to wear it again next year, where she hopes all four of them can celebrate New Year's together as a family.
Iroha is standing in the kitchen in her pajamas making tea. As she takes the first sip, she smiles at how pleasantly the tea warms her. She’s soon joined by Yachiyo, who is fresh out of the bath. She smells the pleasant scent of the tea and Iroha tells her she made ginger tea. She offers Yachiyo a sip and Yahciyo takes her up on the offer. Yachiyo thinks the tea is delicious and she enjoys the comforting way it warms her up. Tsuruno joins them after having set up the guest room. She’s ready for a long and wild night! Yachiyo looks at her and asks if she shouldn’t be getting to bed while Iroha tells her she already made ginger tea. Tsuruno tells Yachiyo that’s fine since she’ll just have a wild sleep instead. Yachiyo asks her what she’s talking about.
Iroha then calls down Felicia and Sana to offer them their cups of tea, but it seems the two of them are already fast asleep. Yachiyo can’t believe they feel asleep where they were: Felicia had fallen asleep midway through her video game whereas Sana had fallen asleep while reading a book, but the two of them had somehow ended up next to each other holding hands. Yachiyo thinks it looks very cute and guesses they ended up that way subconsciously. Tsuruno asks Iroha for her phone and takes a picture of the two sleepy heads. Next, she uses Iroha’s photoshop app to make it look like Felicia and Sana are cats. Then she adds a speech bubble to Felicia that reads “We’re best fur-iends!” and on Sana she adds a speech bubble that reads “It’s so calming to sleep with someone while holding their hand”. Both Iroha and Yachiyo giggle at how cute the picture came out and warns them they can never let those two see this photo. However, their giggling wakes up the two sleepers and Felicia asks them what they look so happy about. Tsuruno’s reaction gives them away and Felicia demands to know if Tsuruno was taking photos of them. Felicia snatches the phone and looks at the photo. She turns to them and asks them what this is about. Sana sees the photo and mentions how embarrassing it is. That’s when Felicia notices that the phone belongs to Iroha and tells her she better delete those photos now and stomps off to her room. Iroha apologizes and promises to delete them but Tsuruno says there’s more to it than that. Both she and Yachiyo think that Felicia is just pretending to be angry but really she’s just embarrassed. Sana says she’s embarrassed too but she doesn’t entirely hate it. Iroha says they both looked so cute so she sent the file to their group chat. After a few minutes, they notice that Felicia saw the post and saved the file for herself.
With a big yawn, Iroha is about to call it a night, when she gets a knock at her bedroom door. The door opens to reveal Ui, who can’t sleep, and asks to just chat for a bit. Iroha happily invites her sister to join her on the bed while they hang out, not minding if she ends up falling asleep. Ui is reluctant at first, as she thinks the bed might be too small for the both of them, but Iroha encourages her by bringing up that they shared a bed when they were both much younger.
As Ui joins her on the now cramped bed, she gives off the impression that she doesn’t like getting treated like a child, which Iroha asks her about. Ui finds it hard to describe, as she knows that she’s still a kid, but it almost feels like she’s getting pampered a little too much. Still, she doesn’t mind it when it comes from her sister, and they begin to talk about all sorts of things, like fortunes, dreams, their parents, and pastries. Iroha notices that it’s past midnight, but decides not to pay much mind to it.
In the morning, Iroha wakes up to Ui fast asleep next to her, though she briefly stirs awake when Iroha makes some movement. Iroha smiles, believing that it’s ok to stay up late and sleep in every once in a while. Before falling back asleep, she tells Ui that they should go out for some stationary items to make letters for their parents, along with baking pastries.
A Magical Girl who is enjoying summer vacation together with her friends. This swimsuit is a Magical Girl’s costume and can be used for combat at any time. However, because she’s not very good at swimming, her inner tube can serve as a weapon for underwater combat. In an emergency, her inner tube has the potential to come off so it can rotate like a screw.

Doppel Description
GIOVANNA (Giovanna)
The Doppel of silence. Its form is a cuckoo. The master of this emotion is in the slow process of accepting herself on her journey to find her sister. Her excitement for the summer has also made her a bit cheerier. This mood is reflected in the Doppel's clothing and mast, giving the impression that it's being unreasonably influenced by its master's temporary emotional state. In other words, its appearance is only skin-deep. Despite being optimized for battle at sea, its master cannot swim, which hinders its movements somewhat. It simply attacks enemies in front of it with all the power at its disposal.
The story is simply Nanami-ke and Momoko trio trying to train Iroha to swim without her float but failing. She reveals that she used to be a swimmer, but there was a time once where her sister was allowed holiday from hospital, and the whole family went to the pool. She mistook her sister having fun in the pool paddling her arms and legs to be her drowning, so she hurried to save her, but tripped and fell head first into the pool and almost drowned, making her suffer from PTSD and unable to swim without a float.
Then Rena began drowning, and the whole team went to save her as she cried for help via telepathy. Surprisingly, Iroha is the fastest of the team and helps Rena to shore by giving Rena her float, while she swims and brings Rena back to shore. On the way, Rena thanks Iroha, but tells her that her leg was caught by seaweeds and made her mistook her leg being cramped, and tells her she is fine.
Realizing Rena is fine, Iroha slowly comes back to her senses and begins to drown instead. It seems her concern for Rena awoke her sisterly instincts and overcame her fear for the rescue. Rena apologizes and thanks Iroha, and Yachiyo informs Iroha that at least signs show that she can swim, and she should take it slow and practice diligently to swim again. Iroha looks forward to be able to swim again and hopes that by that time she would have find Ui they can visit the pool together again.
This Magical Girl pair was able to obtain a strength that supported them during a battle with an overwhelmingly strong Witch. Although they started off as enemies, they wound up becoming the best of friends, connected by an unbreakable bond. Their wings can only be seen the moment that power is ready.
"Yes, but I was so nervous when we were eating it that I don't remember what it tasted like..."
"Well, then let's go again. We can invite the others next time."
"I'd like that! I wonder which flavors they'll choose..."
Iroha and Yachiyo enter the crowded grocery store where a big sale is going on that day. Felicia is growling for some meat for dinner. Tsuruno thinks she looks like she's starving but Yachiyo clarifies they had meat the other night already. As much as Felicia would like to have meat for dinner everynight, it's too expensive and not very healthy. Felicia says that's not true and quotes her favorite show DecagonBall "Ya can't get stronger if ya don't eat meat!" Tsuruno remembers that episode, but Yachiyo stands firm in her decision and tells Felicia to behave. Felicia pouts that she'll never get stronger like this. Tsuruno asks if she's just going to give up and quotes a line from the latest episode, reminding her that the path to victory is found in the deepest despair. Felicia doesn't consider something like this deep despair, but according to Tsuruno feeling despair is the correct response to not being able to eat meat. Felicia thinks she gets it now so she runs off smiling. Iroha has a bad feeling about this, so Yachiyo urges them to hurry and get what they came for.
The group finishes shopping and go to the register. They haven't seen Felicia in a while so they wonder if maybe she went home upset. The cashier gives them their total but the amount is way too expensive. As Yachiyo looks over their groceries, it seems Felicia has already come back and had placed a large piece of very expensive meat in their shopping cart when they weren't looking. The cashier asks them to please wrap it what they're doing because there are a long line of customers behind them. If they want to put something back, they'll have to get out of the line to do so. Yachiyo sighs and ends up buying the meat.
Back home Ui is scolding Felicia for what she did. Felicia has no regrets as she imagines putting the big hunk of meat on the grill and taking a bite out of it. Ui begins to drool a bit as Yachiyo and Iroha stare at her. Ui claims she wasn't thinking about how good it would taste at all. Yachioyo tells her it's okay since she's the one who bought it after all. She just needs to make sure that this never happens again. Felicia is ready to take any punishment so long as she gets to have some of the meat first and looks to Tsuruno for agreement since it was Tsuruno that gave her the idea. Tsuruno swears she was just trying to cheer her up when she quoted the show, but Felicia misinterpreted it and decided to act fast before they could get to the register. As punishment, Yachiyo is not letting either Felicia or Tsuruno have any meat today. The two of them cry out in astonishment, but Yachiyo decides this is too harsh a punishment and has them organize the storage room instead.
The group finishes up dinner and Felicia is stuffed. She calls the meat amazing and Tsuruno points out it was super high quality, expensive meat after all. Felicia wasn't aware since she just grabbed the biggest piece she could find. Yachiyo has everyone pitch in to help with the dishes so they can just relax for the rest of the night, but Felicia is too full to move. Yachiyo warns her she'll turn into a cow if she just takes a nap right away, but Felicia doesn't mind if that means she doesn't have to help with dishes. Tsuruno thinks that sounds like fun so the two stand around going "moo" and pretending to be cows. Since they won't help with dishes, Yachiyo has them get started on organizing the storage room instead. Tsuruno asks if she has to help, but Yachiyo insists she needs to help keep an eye on Felicia since she'll just goof around otherwise.
Iroha and the others are enjoying their tea when they decide to check up on Felicia. But Felicia has already come back from the storage room and she’s eager to show them a photo she found. Yachiyo sees what the photo is and immediately snatches it from Felicia’s hands. Tsuruno catches up to her and tells Yachiyo that she tried to stop her but the photo was too special. The group gathers around Yahciyo to look, and they see a very young Yachiyo standing with a group of other people in the photo. Iroha guesses they must be the modeling group that Yachiyo used to be a part of. Yachiyo tells Iroha that she’s right, and explains she used to be part of a modeling group that would do different photo shoots together until the group disbanded. Felicia figures it must have been more fun as a group than going alone, and Yachiyo stares at the photo for a moment before agreeing with her. Yachiyo says the leader back then couldn’t handle it. She snatches the photo out of Felicia’s hands, saying it’s nothing important. Yachiyo asks if they’re done organizing the storage room, but the two just giggle since they got distracted by the photo album.
It’s late at night and Iroha yawns as she walks about in her pajamas. She notices that Yachiyo is also up and notices she’s looking at her bank book. She asks if things aren’t looking so good for the month and Yachiyo looks up and says they’re not. The meat that Felicia had them buy really set them back. Iroha asks if there’s anything they can do, but Tsuruno is already working at Banbanzai and Iroha isn’t old enough to get a job. Iroha wonders to herself what she can do since she knows she can’t keep depending on Yachiyo all the time. Yachiyo decides to call her modeling agency to adjust her schedule. Iroha asks if it’s hard being a model and Yachiyo responds that it’s much harder than it looks, since the camera can see if you’re not confident in yourself. Yachiyo asks if Iroha was interested in trying but Iroha quickly declines, saying she only asked because of the picture they saw earlier. She knows it must have been hard for Yachiyo, but Iroha simply thought Yachiyo looked amazing in it. Yachiyo smiles and thanks Iroha for the compliment. Iroha wishes her goodnight and heads back upstairs, but her face has a troubled expression on it. She knows she can’t get a part-time job, but there must be something she can do. Iroha wonders if it was wrong to ask a pro how easy their job was and sighs.
Sana asks Iroha what’s wrong, startling Iroha slightly. It seems Sana couldn’t sleep either and noticed Iroha sighing to herself. Iroha informs Sana about how bad their money is looking for the month. She wants to help but doesn’t know how. Iroha apologizes for keeping Sana up and bids her goodnight.
Yachiyo meets up with her manager the next day. The manager asks Yachiyo to let her know if it gets too busy so they can adjust her schedule again. She doesn’t want Yachiyo to push herself too hard since she knows she has a lot on her shoulders for someone her age. Yachiyo thanks her for her help and promises to make their next photo shoot a success. The manager asks if she’s referring to the article about the “fashion and food of Kamihama” and informs her the other model she was supposed to be working with became ill. The publisher has been contacting other agencies to find a replacement model, but it hasn’t been easy since they need to find someone that will look just as good besides Yahciyo. They’re prepared to offer a generous sum and are even willing to work with someone who isn’t a professional. Yachiyo recalls Iroha’s questions from last night and tells the manager she has a friend who is interested in becoming a model as well. The manager is surprised to hear Yachiyo talk about a friend and asks if she can bring her here to meet with her. Yachiyo believes that Iroha was interested in modeling, but thinks it would be a little weird to do a photo shoot with Iroha. Either way she knows Iroha will say yes.
Back at home, Yachiyo asks Iroha if she can speak with her for a minute. Yachiyo tells Iroha about the photo shoot concerning food and fashion from Kamihama and how she’s going to be working with another model. But the model got sick so she wants Iroha to fill in for her. Iroha can’t believe what she’s hearing and she points out she’s not a professional. Yachiyo says that’s not a problem and she’s glad to help Iroha since she was interested in becoming a model. Those weren’t Iroha’s intentions since she was just making conversation with Yachiyo to see if she was alright, but she keeps this part to herself. Yachiyo tells Iroha it pays well and asks her to give it a try. Iroha says she’s willing to do it since she needs to learn how to not be so shy. Yachiyo thanks her and goes to inform the editor. Iroha isn’t so sure she can be a model, but she’s willing to try since the money will help and she doesn’t want this opportunity to pass her by.
Several days have passed since then and Iroha can’t stop thinking about being a model. It doesn’t feel right to her, but as a member of Mikazuki Villa she has to do what she can to help the household. Iroha has been checking out different magazines and practicing the poses in them, but she’s worried because there will be other people besides just her and Yachiyo at the shoot. Iroha is getting nervous just thinking about it, so she goes to the empty music room after school to practice. She does a few poses and asks herself if it’s any good. A voice tells her she’s not really that good and Iroha turns around to find Rena there. Iroha asks Rena what she’s doing here but Rena says she should be the one asking that. Iroha is completely embarrassed because Rena saw her posing and soon Momoko and Kaede catch up to Rena, asking her if she found what she was looking for. They notice Iroha is also in the room and ask what she’s up to. Since Iroha still looks flustered, Momoko and Kaede assure her she doesn’t have to tell them if she doesn’t want to since everyone has their secrets after all.
Iroha explains everything that’s happened to the trio. Rena asks why she would practice at school since it’s weird. Kaede tells Rena not to be rude since she practices the poses of her favorite idols all the time. Rena proudly admits she does, but unlike Iroha, she practices her poses in her room or at a concert. Momoko tells the two that’s enough and turns to Iroha, who is drowning in embarrassment. Momoko believes that Yachiyo is pushing her too hard because she may be too excited at the possibility of working with Iroha. Since Iroha doesn’t want to tell her and let her down, Momoko offers to call Yachiyo and take care of it for her. Rena calls Momoko a busybody.
Yachiyo is shopping for clothes for her and Iroha to wear for the shoot. She’s picking out something bright and cute for Iroha while she gets something a little more lowkey for herself. As she’s shopping, her phone rings. Yachiyo answers the call with a bright and chipper greeting, causing Momoko to question if it’s really Yachiyo answering. Momoko asks her how Yachiyo is feeling about the photo shoot but Yachiyo is confident they’ll do fine. Momoko tells her she’s more worried about Iroha and reminds Yachiyo she used to feel very nervous during photo shoots when she first started. Yachiyo just tells her not to worry since she’s determined to make the shoot a success and turn this into a wonderful memory for both of them. Momoko sounds worried still but Yachiyo reassures her everything will be fine. Yachiyo hasn’t felt this excited about a shoot in a long time and she’s committed to making sure Iroha feels the same way. Momoko can see she won’t be able to change Yachiyo’s mind so they hang up, with Yachiyo giving another unusually chipper send off.
Momoko hangs up the phone and tells Iroha sorry. Iroha says that’s okay since now she’s more motivated to do whatever it takes to become a good model. Rena cheerfully offers to help, since she considers it her specialty. Kaede asks if Rena had ever modeled before but Rena says she knows everything there is to know about idols so Rena offers to take her to the perfect place for her training. Ui finds them in the music room, having been looking for Iroha. Momoko and the others assure Ui that Iroha will be back by dinner since they’ll be borrowing her for awhile. Rena says they’re taking her to a place where she can be super cute.
Yachiyo happily finishes preparing some of Iroha’s favorite foods for dinner that night. She wants Iroha to be happy and in the best mindset for their upcoming shoot. Ui comes home and smells all the delicious food. Yachiyo asks where Iroha is, but ui tells them she went with the Momoko trio. Ui looks a little worried since she thought Iroha has been acting weird lately, like she’s stressed about something. Sana wonders if maybe she’s just stressed about the photo shoot. Ui figures that must be it since she never dreamed that Iroha would want to be a model. Yachiyo agrees it is a little surprising and trails off, lost in thought for a moment. She wonders outloud if maybe that was the real reason she looked stressed. Ui says Iroha wouldn’t have offered to help if she was.
Yachiyo remembers how Iroha had acted when she first told her she’d be in the photo shoot with her and tells Ui that Iroha had initially refused but eventually agreed. Sana has it figured out and tells Yachiyo that the night they had the barbecue, Iroha was really worried about their finances and wanted to do something to help, so she probably only agreed because she wanted to help pay the bills. Yachiyo kicks herself for not noticing sooner. Sana thinks Yachiyo should go have a talk with Iroha while she and Ui finish making the dinner. Yachiyo thanks Sana and tries to call Iroha, but she’s not answering.
Instead Yachiyo calls Momoko and asks to speak to Iroha. She wants to apologize to her and she’s sorry for not listening to what Momoko was trying to tell her earlier. Momoko says that’s okay and tells her where they are.
The four of them are hanging out at Ikumi’s maid café and Rena is having Iroha observe how the maids move around. They watch as Ikumi smiles and winks at a customer, so Rena has Iroha practice winking cutesy the way Ikumi does. Iroha gives it a few tries, but her hesitation is glaringly obvious as Rena points out. Rena reminds her she can’t be scared and encourages her to make her fans happy by giving her biggest and best smile. Rena makes Iroha practice smiling again as Kaede and Momoko watch. Kaede reminds Momoko that Yachiyo is on her way so they can stop the practice but it’s too late, Yachiyo has already arrived. Yachiyo calls out to Iroha and then approaches her. She apologizes for how she pushed her into the modeling job because of how excited she was and for making her worry about the finances. However, Iroha is still in mid pose and Yachiyo asks them what is going on. Rena says they’re practicing cute poses for the photo shoot. Momoko suggests they head somewhere else so Iroha and Yachiyo can have a talk.
At a different café, Yachiyo apologizes to Iroha once more. Yachiyo was just so excited at the idea of the two of them working together since she honestly thought Iroha was interested in becoming a model. Iroha says it was her fault since she was the one who brought it up and ended up giving her the wrong impression. Yachiyo realizes now that Iroha was just trying to do whatever she can to help out Mikazuki Villa, but she shouldn’t feel pressured to do something she doesn’t want to do. Iroha promises to speak up next time and asks that Yachiyo do the same and not try to do everything by herself. They may be younger than her, but all of them are on the same team. The two of them smile as both of them realize they are each worried about the other and they can each be honest with each other. Yachiyo tells her not to worry about the photo shoot since they can cancel it whenever, but Iroha still wants to try her best at it. However, Iroha is still very nervous. Even though she’d been practicing and can now do the poses thanks to Rena, her nervousness is written all over her face. It’s just like Yachiyo had told her before, “People can see your feelings through the eye of a camera.” Iroha believes she just needs to find something that lets her be herself. Yachiyo suggests she try eating her parfait before it melts so Iroha digs in. The two of them share their parfaits with each other and promise to come back and try the others on the menu. Iroha suddenly has an idea and suggests they spend time together like this in front of the camera.
Iroha and Yachiyo head back home from the photo shoot and are greeted by the MIkazuki Villa household as well as the Momoko trio. All of them were wondering how it went but Iroha is still a bit nervous. Tsuruno ventures to guess it didn’t go so well judging from her expression. Iroha proudly proclaims it was a total failure. Yachiyo explains they interviewed her and took a few pictures, but when Iroha tried to act natural they came off like sisters. When they tried to take things more seriously, Iroha became so nervous they had to call it off there. Even though it didn’t work out, they had a lot of fun and Yachiyo had them print the first photo they took. Tsuruno and the others look at the photo but Tsuruno doesn’t want to say something and be rude. Rena says she doesn’t have much to say either and points out they look like they always do in the photo. Tsuruno agrees and says you can tell that they’re really great friends in the photo. Yachiyo says their relationship is a little hard to describe, since Iroha was Yachiyo’s assistant, then her leader. But at Mikazuki Villa they’re family and anyone can tell just by looking at the photo that their relationship is the best.
Even though they ended up with a photo, they didn’t get the job so they ended up not getting paid so they’ll be on a tight food budget from now on. Felicia and Tsuruno cry out in despair.
Two close Magical Girl sisters who are helping out at the shrine during the New Year's holidays in their miko uniforms. They serve the shrine as maidens, supporting each other with everything from guiding people around the grounds to performing the Kagura. They are anxious about learning the terminology of the shrine and the possibility of running into their classmates.

Iroha & Kuroe's Side Story
Kuroe wakes up to her alarm, dresses, and eats breakfast. Her mother is surprised at her early departure. She meets Iroha on the way to school and they discuss after-school patrols, with Kuroe downplaying her abilities and crediting Iroha for their success. Kuroe drifts into a dream where she confidently partners with Iroha during patrols, but upon waking up, she realizes she fell asleep in her uniform and laments the contrast between her dream and reality.
After classes, Kuroe overhears classmates planning to visit a new shop, prompting her to reflect on her pre-magical girl social life, now faded from memory. San Kagura, a veteran magical girl, organizes a citywide meeting for training and collaboration for magical girls. Kuroe hesitantly attends, and gets paired with a timid magical girl with whom she has trouble communicating. During patrol, Kuroe detects a witch’s presence, but her partner struggles to keep up. Kuroe takes charge, strategizing to defeat the witch, and though successful, she offers her grief seed to her partner, who interprets it as pity and storms off. San checks on Kuroe, who blames herself for the failed teamwork and decides to withdraw and question her worth as a magical girl.
Iroha then messages Kuroe, apologizing for her delayed response and proposing a meetup during her upcoming visit to Takarazaki, to which Kuroe eagerly agrees.
Kuroe nervously reunites with Iroha, who calms her by sharing a limited-edition candy. To avoid classmates, they retreat to a park, and at a food truck, Iroha suggests ordering dessert to emulate a "normal" day. Kuroe hesitates but follows along, choosing juice while Iroha contemplates an extravagant crepe. They watch takoyaki being cooked, and Kuroe admires Iroha’s effortless kindness when she helps a lost elderly woman. Later, Kuroe returns a dropped wallet to a stranger and Iroha praises her.
The two visit a movie-themed photo spot in Takarazaki, where they encounter Himena, Miyuri, and San reenacting a scene from a popular film. Upon seeing Kuroe, San leaves and Kuroe reveals the occasion where she ceded a grief seed to her partner. Despite the awkwardness, the two take a photo together, though Kuroe struggles to smile naturally. As evening falls, Iroha insists on helping Kuroe mend relationships with other magical girls and offers to mediate, to which Kuroe reluctantly agrees. They detect a familiar, but Kuroe hesitates until Iroha encourages her.
They find a faint magical signal, discovering others battling familiars in the labyrinth. Kuroe rallies, attacking the witch with her full strength and defeating it. The rescued girl, who was her previous partner, thanks her, and Kuroe apologizes for offering the grief seed to her. San also praises Kuroe's growth in solo and team combat.
Kuroe and Iroha part ways after a patrol, with Kuroe vowing to initiate their next meeting. She retakes a photo with Iroha, wanting to capture a genuine smile as a reminder. In a dream, Kuroe envisions patrolling confidently with Iroha, and once more resolves to become a strong, selfless magical girl like Iroha. Side Story
Madoka & Iroha's Side Story
The following is a summary posted on 4chan's /pmmm/ general.
Iroha travels to Madoka's city of Mitakihara to buy gifts for Yachiyo to give her manager, who helped her greatly through her carreer. Since Yachiyo is too busy, Iroha is doing it for her.
There, she met up with Madoka by chance and they had a great time chatting and catching up. Madoka guides Iroha to the shop, and they have a chance meeting with Madoka's family. After purchasing the famed sweets for Yachiyo's manager and Mikazuki Manor, Iroha accepts Madoka's offer and goes over to her place, playing with Madoka's little brother and then they have girl talk until late at night.
Iroha notices the time and heads back, with Madoka accompanying her to the station, but then realizes the train has malfunctioned, making her stuck. Seeing how Iroha is unwilling to trouble Madoka again after spending the whole afternoon there, Madoka calls Mami and explains the situation, and PMHQ decides to meet up to eat together.
After a brief meal, Mami suggests that they should have a pajama party over at her place, making Iroha feel more comfortable since she is not giving trouble to Mami as it is a party. She offers to cook in return with Madoka as her helper. Everyone agrees.
Iroha cooked up a great feast as PMHQ agreed and it was wonderful, everyone wanting second helpings as Kyoko wolfs down her food while singing praises. After the meal, Mami serves her handmade pudding and poundcake as desserts, and the girls have a great time as they begin chatting on various topics, including how they are dealing with the Witches that have traveled to the city via a branch of the Mirror Witch. It is then they detect the presence of such a Witch.
They enter the branch mirror, dealing with the powerful familiars, but Iroha and Madoka are knocked into a mirror after an ambush caught the whole team by surprise.
In this world, Mami, Sayaka and Kyouko are a team, but there is no Madoka in this world, and she is too afraid to call home. For Iroha, she realizes Felicia and Sana cannot be contacted, and she begins fearing the worst when she learns Yachiyo is still wearing her ice mask and stays aloof as Tsuruno desperately tries to reconnect. As for this world's Iroha, our Iroha learnt from her devastated mother, who thought Iroha was pulling some kind of cruel prank, that she died in a car accident, and Ui has succumbed to her illness.
The two realized that it is a miracle that they are alive and became friends, wanting to return back to their world, wanting to protect and treasure it even more. They find the mirror and return back to their world, reuniting with the rest of PMHQ.
After dealing with the problem, they realize it is already sunrise, and both Iroha and Madoka are eager to return home as their desire to treasure and protect their world has been reaffirmed and would love their world even more than before.
Thanks to her wish to cure her Ui's disease, Iroha has healing magic. However, while she has been shown using it to heal others, it is unclear whether she can use it on herself to the same extent as Sayaka Miki. However, her power is capable of completely healing a cracked Soul Gem, as was the case with Mifuyu Azusa. Her connect ability in the game seems to support the thought of her healing ability being greatly effective on other people rather than herself allowing her to potentially keep her allies alive at a more effective rate.
With her arm-mounted crossbow, Iroha can fire magical arrows, either one-by-one or in a large, spread-out volley. She can charge her arrows before firing to make them stronger. She is also capable of creating a large bow made of magic capable of firing herself like an arrow. Her arrows can also form one concentrated blast when combined as she is shown creating beams of light after they are shot into her magical sigil. Whilst Iroha can fire magical arrows at a rapid rate, they don't always reliably hit her opponent and can be deflected away. It should be noted however they can easily overwhelm enemies if fired constantly allowing Iroha to potentially face a wave of enemies if necessary.
Something interesting about Iroha is what happens when she uses the 'Connect' ability on another magical girl, it seems that her magic ultimately powers up the attacks of other magical girls as shown with Tsuruno's fans spewing greater amounts of fire after Iroha connected with her. The same also applies to Felicia's hammer travelling around at great speeds and creating a purple energetic wave around it when Iroha connected with her also. As a result, Iroha is able to hypothetically give her allies a temporary power boost offensively if she were to 'Connect' with her allies.
When her soul gem turns black, she can bring forth her doppel, Giovanna. Giovanna seems to be able to summon varying amounts of 'cloth' from it's being at will. This 'cloth' can be used to suffocate enemies after tying them up or to create binds or traps. The doppel seems to have an execution method when dealing with enemies where it will wrap them up in the 'cloth' before mercilessly pecking them to death. Iroha - when in control of Giovanna that is - can also send tendrils of this cloth charging at her enemies in a volley and wrap it's 'cloth' around herself as a form of defence. Though the doppel may not be as strong as other ones it can be dangerous due to it's persistent desire to get rid of anything that Iroha doesn't wish to acknowledge. The doppel hypothetically can also keep Iroha 'safe' as it's innate nature is denial or 'silence'. As a result, Iroha is never able to truly be taken over by the doppel as it renders her completely oblivious once it takes over, effectively preserving her mental state so she doesn't become lost to it.
In Arc 2 Chapter 12, it was revealed that Iroha doesn't have healing as her innate ability. What her innate power truly is is "reversal". This is why she was able to fix Mifuyu's Soul Gem in Arc 1, and also why her healing seemed to be so slow, especially in comparison to someone like Sayaka who specifically wished to heal someone. She's actually reversing the negative effects on those she's healing, bringing them back to prime. This is also why Yachiyo and Mifuyu are at their full power in Arc 2 despite their age: Iroha reversed them back to their prime. In her Infinite Iroha form, she’s capable of using this power to restore several Magical Girls, but the cost of overusing it would be her vanishing from the world.
Etymology
The character of her last name means "ring" (環). This may refer to Soul Gems being stored as a ring when the user is untransformed.
This is in comparison to Madoka which can be written as "circle" or "round" in kanji (円)
She bears the same name as the Japanese pangram poem, the Iroha. This poem is regarded as the ABC of the Japanese language, by a certain traditional ordering the first three hiragana, i-ro-ha, and contains every mora of the language exactly once."Iroha" starts like this: "Iro ha nioedo, chirinuru wo" (色は匂へど, 散りぬるを) - "though the flowers blossom fragrantly, they will eventually fall" - and continued on in this vein, talking fundamentally about the cycle of the seasons and of life and death. It was backed by a hidden message written with the last syllable of each line: "toga nakute shisu" (咎無くて死す) "die without wrongdoing". Together, the poem expresses a strong sentiment of "dying at peace and with honor".
It may also refer to Accelle, Blast and Charge also being A, B and C.
Trivia
The name of Iroha's witch, Giovanna, and the name of Yachiyo's witch, Campanella, are a reference the famous Japanese novel Night on the Galactic Railroad, who's main characters were named Giovanni and Campanella. This, together with Campanella being the doppel of Ticket-clipping, is irony - in Night on the Galactic Railroad, Campanella decides to answer a question in class instead of the shy Giovanni, only to stay silent so that Giovanni is less embarrassed, and it is Giovanni who owns the ticket to the galaxy.
The name Giovanna means 'God is gracious'. This may have something to do with Iroha's role in the story, ultimately being the one who frees her sister from her terrible fate as if it were a miracle - hence the fact she is a God like figure and later becomes Infinite Iroha. The guidebook says part of the inspiration of her doppel's design was 'a saint' (possibly hinting at the crown it wears) so this may hold some ground.
Iroha has a lot of bird symbolism. Not only does a bird appear in her transformation and in the animation as one she chases after for the first part of the story, but it also becomes her cape that resembles a birds shape, and her doppel also is a calling bird. Birds are said to symbolize transcending limits and freedom, which Iroha eventually does after overcoming her fear and timidness.
Iroha's hood is shown as being down on her 5-star battle sprite, which also represents her reaching her full potential.
There are several instances in the anime where the number 168 is shown in various scenes that focus on Iroha. 168 can alternatively be read as "I-ro-ha".
Iroha's birthday is the same day that Magia Record officially launched.
Since Iroha's doppel represents a calling bird this may be a reference to 'four calling birds' as Iroha was meant to be the fourth Magius leader. This also may be why her doppel is linked with Touka, Nemu and her sister Ui. The four of them were meant to make a group.
Iroha's doppel, Giovanna may have a deeper meaning. The doppel represents not just Iroha's insecurities in herself but also the denial she carries throughout the story. She doesn't want to accept Ui being gone and thus keeps searching for her. Covering up everything she doesn't want to hear in 'cloth' meaning that she can't accept reality.
This can also be interpreted as Iroha covering up anything that deters her from her main goal as she doesn't want to give up.
Or as Iroha having trouble expressing herself, hence why it is the Doppel Of Silence.
The bottom symbol of her soul gem when not transformed resembles her hood drawn over her head.
This makes Iroha one of the few magical girls whose non-transformed soul gem symbols do not match.
Her magia is Italian for "The path to the future". This could represent her leading magical girls to a new future and saving Kamihama. However, the name is not grammatically correct, as 'Futuro' is used either as a noun or masculine form of the adjective, which doesn't make much sense in the former case and is still grammatically incorrect in the latter.
On the cover of DA VINCI Magazine 2020 for October, Madoka is holding the book The Neverending Story while Iroha is holding Little Women.
According to Ultimate Madoka and Madoka • Iroha's Magical Girl Stories, Iroha becomes a Magical Girl only in Magia Record's timeline. In other timelines, she either never contracted Kyubey or died in a car accident. Hence, Ui was never healed.
In the game Iroha is shown making a contract in her bedroom, while in the anime it happens in the roof of the hospital where Ui is being treated.
Ume Aoki's commentary on Iroha in Magia Archive Vol. 1: "When I was first tasked with designing Iroha, her weapon was a dagger, and since it's a simple weapon, I designed her character to be plain as well. As game production went on, we decided she would be the main character, so I upped her heroine factor in a very ad hoc way, such as changing her eyes from a slanted to a more almond-like shape, and giving her long hair in the back, which wasn’t a part of her design at first. The transparent area on her stomach is my favorite part. As for her school uniform, I made the first basic shape, and from there, f4 chose various colors and patterns for the ribbons and skirt. I remember having a hard time picking [the final design] because they were all so cute. The uniforms for all the schools, save for the Kamihama Municipal University Affiliated School, were designed by f4."
