Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: —Walpurgisnacht: Rising— (劇場版 魔法少女まどか☆マギカ〈ワルプルギスの廻天〉 Gekijouban Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica〈Walpurgis no Kaiten〉, lit. Magical Girl Madoka Magica The Movie〈The Tide of Walpurgis〉) is an upcoming movie and a sequel to Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion[1]. The project was officially announced on April 25th, 2021 during the Madoka 10th Anniversary event. More information was revealed during the Aniplex Online Fest 2023 on September 10th, 2023, which included a new trailer and an approximated release date of Winter 2024. On August 16th, 2024, it was announced that the movie had been delayed to Winter 2025[2]. On July 15th, 2025, it was announced that the movie had been further delayed to February 2026.[3] On January 23rd, 2026, it was announced again that the movie will be delayed to an unspecified date, to be announced in February.[4][5] On February 27th, 2026, it was announced that the movie will be released on August 28th, 2026.[6]
Development
Walpurgisnacht Rising was first announced during the Anniversary Stage as part of the Madoka 10th Anniversary event. The first teaser shown the return of the main staff; Akiyuki Shinbo as Chief Director[7], Gen Urobuchi as a scriptwriter[7], Aoki Ume as an original character designer[7], Shaft as an animation production[7], Junichiro Taniguchi as a character designer[7], Gekidan Inu Curry as a designer of the parallel world[7], and music by Yuki Kajiura[7]. After the announcement, Gen Urobuchi revealed that the script for the movie was finished sometime between 2014 and 2016.[8]
The first trailer was revealed as an ending to the Aniplex Online Fest 2023 and featured the first animation reveal along with a new key visual and the Winter 2024 release date. The trailer also revealed that Yukihiro Miyamoto will return as a director[7], resuming his position from Rebellion[9]. On August 16, 2024 it was revealed on the official Madoka Magica X (twitter) account that that movie was delayed due to production circumstances.[2] The second trailer was released during Aniplex Online Fest 2024 revealing the new release date of winter 2025.
On October 18th, 2024, the official website revealed that there will be another version of the 2nd trailer called "Trailer 2: Side Homura" to be screened after the screening of "Revival Screening" of Rebellion from October 25th to October 31st.[10] The trailer was uploaded to YouTube after Revival Screening ended, on November 1st, 2024. With the release of the July 15th, 2025 trailer, the movie's release date was pushed further back to Febuary 2026 from the previously announced Winter 2025 date. On January 23rd, 2026, the official website revealed that the movie has been further delayed.
On February 27th, 2026, the new Japanese release date has been announced to be August 28th, 2026. As of the release of the Main Trailer on the AniplexUSA YouTube channel on July 2nd, 2026, the release date for the English film in any variant has not yet been set.[11]

Trailer 2 was revealed during Aniplex Online Fest 2024 on September 16th, 2024.
Trailer 2 SIDE Homura (October 25th, 2024)
Trailer 2 SIDE Homura was revealed during special Rebellion rescreening on October 25th, 2024. An illegal recording of it was posted online on X on October 28, 2024 before it was officially published to YouTube on November 1st, 2024, after the Revival Screening ended.

This trailer was released during the second "100 Day Festival" stream for Magia Exedra.

This trailer was released coincident with the airing of the final episode of Puella Magi Madoka Magica Beginnings & Eternal (TV Edition).

Later Additions
As revealed in Trailer 3 and later confirmed on Twitter[13], the Storyboard Artist for this film was Tomohiro Furukawa, also known for being the Director of Revue Starlight[14].
International Release
On June 1st, 2026, it was announced by Phoenix Next Movie on Facebook that they would be responsible for a Thailand release of the film. They did not announce a date for release at the time though.[15]

Trivia
- In the first trailer, Homura is shown to be in front of the 18th tarot card, The Moon. The Moon card represents, illusion, dreams, vagueness, instability, deception, anxiety, fear, misconception, subconscious and insecurity. [16]
- The music that plays in Trailer 2 is Nux walpurgis, while the 100-Day Festival Trailer plays Nightmare Ballet.
- More than one Homura being visible is only seen in one poster, and does not appear in any of the trailers.
- In some of the trailers, witch designs original to Magia Record are briefly visible. It is unknown whether these are intended to be an easter egg, or have some plot significance.
- The scheduled Japanese release date for the film (August 28th, 2026) also coensides with the birthday of Goethe.[17] Goethe, best known for authoring *Faust*, is also a well known inspiration for the series.[18]
