    • Hanna ends up alone in an orphanage, where she faces bullies at school with no one to confide in, instead only writing her negative feelings in a notebook and fantasizing about revenge.[11]
  • Mikoto Sena lives in an abusive household with a violent, financially irresponsible father. At school, she pretends to be cheerful while her home life deteriorates. She avoids going home and declines social invitations she cannot afford.[12]
  • One day, Mikoto's mother gives her a crumpled one thousand yen note as allowance, her cheek visibly swollen from abuse. Mikoto suggests she gets a job to help her parents, but her mother refuses. Frustrated, Mikoto decides her father must disappear. She takes the money to buy a knife from a hundred yen store but hesitates after recalling a rare happy memory of her father at a festival. She flees without purchasing it.[12]
    • Later, near a train station, Mikoto considers running away but cannot decide whether to abandon her mother. Kyubey appears and offers to grant her wish. Mikoto contracts, wishing for her father to go away. Her wish is granted: her father leaves to live with another woman.[12]
  • Hanna is eventually approached by Kyubey, and she wishes her bullies out of existence, erasing them from everything but her own memories and becoming a Magical Girl.[11]
  • After her father's departure, Mikoto's mother begins neglecting the household, withholding money for food and frequently going out. Their financial situation worsens.[12]
  • Mikoto discovers her magic allows her to command others and, desperate for a normal family, she uses it on a neighbor, making the woman believe Mikoto is her daughter. The neighbor and her husband welcome Mikoto, though they treat her as their actual adult daughter rather than Mikoto herself.[12]
  • Mikoto throws herself into Magical Girl duties, fighting Familiars obsessively. One day she enters a Labyrinth and sees Hanna struggling against a Familiar. She uses her command magic and saves her, introducing herself afterwards. Mikoto attempts to befriend her, initiating conversations, though Hanna remains guarded and finds Mikoto's persistent efforts amusing rather than genuine. Despite their differences, they decide to team up.[12]
  • Hanna discovers her innate magic is copying the powers of other magical girls, though she could only use one at a time. Mikoto's mind control magic became her favorite due to its convenience, which made Mikoto proud and Hanna happy, allowing both of them to bond.[11]
  • With Hanna's help, Mikoto discovers her suggestion magic works on herself. She uses it to believe she has a loving family and happy school life, temporarily easing her pain. When Hanna offers to meet her parents, Mikoto, still under her own spell, agrees enthusiastically. After the suggestion wears off, she panics and decides to bring Hanna to the enchanted elderly couple's home instead.[12]
  • Mikoto confirms the couple remains under her spell and tells them a friend is visiting. At their home, Mikoto and Hanna help prepare dinner and the couple act as loving parents. While cooking, Hanna notices Mikoto looks sad despite claiming to be happy and offers to listen. Mikoto admits feeling unfulfilled and invisible, expressing a desire to be found and not abandoned.[12]
    • After dinner, Hanna gives Mikoto an exchange diary for sharing Witch information, mentioning Mikoto can also write her thoughts. Mikoto buys them matching pens but struggles with what to write, realizing her habit of lying has obscured her true self.[12]
  • Mikoto and Hanna continue hunting Witches and Familiars near Mikoto's apartment complex. Mikoto becomes obsessive, driven by fear that her Soul Gem will become too tainted and that Hanna will abandon her if she becomes useless.[12]
  • One day, while fighting a Witch on the rooftop of the Daito Apartment Complex where Mikoto lived, Hanna and Mikoto encounter Kanagi Izumi and work together to defeat the Witch. Kanagi invites the two of them to fight together in the future, as well as the other Magical Girls in Daito and while Mikoto is friendly to Kanagi, Hanna is more withdrawn. Inwardly, Mikoto is afraid of Kanagi's mind-reading magic and fears exposure, while Hanna fears losing Mikoto.[11][12]
    • Hanna later confronts Kanagi and urges her to not get involved with Mikoto and to forget about them. though she initially refuses, Hanna transforms and uses her copied Suggestion magic to erase her memory. Delighted by this, Hanna realized she and Mikoto could use their abilities to disappear from the world whenever they wanted, living like ghosts.[11] Unbeknownst to her, Mikoto had approached Kanagi with the same purpose as Hanna and sees her wiping Kanagi's memories, though she doesn't know why. Mikoto ultimately interprets this as protection and intensifies her Witch hunting going forward despite Hanna's concerns.[12]
  • Hanna writes a deeply personal exchange diary entry revealing her past of bullying, her parents' deaths, and her time in an orphanage. She describes meeting Mikoto as the first light in her dark life and offers support. Touched, Mikoto writes an honest reply confessing all her lies but tears it up and instead sends a false reply claiming she is fine.[12]
  • While hunting, as there'd been a drought of Witches, Hanna confronts Mikoto about her pretending to not be exhausted and suggests they run away together. Mikoto refuses, claiming she has things to protect, and resolves to change her situation before truly facing Hanna.[12]
    • Immediately after this resolution, Mikoto collapses on an apartment complex rooftop. Her Soul Gem, overwhelmed by corruption, transforms into a Grief Seed and she becomes a Witch as Hanna screams out her name. In her final moments, Mikoto experiences agonizing pain and hears Mitama's wish in her head, which she deeply resonates with. She regrets running from her real parents and classmates, never confiding in Hanna, and erasing her father. As she transforms, she sees the sunset behind Hanna and feels gratitude that Hanna is with her until the end.[12]
    • During this same time as Mikoto despairs, Mitama makes her own wish, affecting Mikoto and her Witch.[Citation needed]
    • After escaping Mikoto's Witch, Kyubey approaches Hanna and explains that Witches come from Magical Girls. Suffering a complete mental breakdown, Hanna bashes her head open on the ground and realizes happiness was never going to be hers. Declaring she would rebel against the incubators, she uses her magic to bind Mikoto's witch to the Daito Apartment Complex, telling it to spread despair and promising to visit.[11]
    • Unbeknownst to even Mikoto, Mitama's wish during the exact moment Mikoto became a Witch allowed Mikoto to gain the power of Transplant magic, thus transplanting her persona into Hanna and maintaining her sense of self as a parasite within Hanna's mind.[13]
  • Some time later, Hanna uses her copied Magic to stop a Witch from moving and tells it her entire story. Hanna thanks it for spending time with her and decides to mind control it to cause mayhem, rather than killing it for a Grief Seed.[11]
  • Years ago, Konoha, Hazuki, and Ayame live at Tsuzuji's House orphanage run by a kind Director. Hazuki arrived after her parents died in a car accident. Konoha arrived after her parents died. Ayame was found abandoned in an alley.[14]

They discover this after the Director collapses.[14]

Ayame immediately wants to save Tsuzuji. Konoha is skeptical and suggests only one contract. Hazuki refuses to let her do it alone. All three decide to contract together.[14]
    • Konoha proposes they plan their three wishes: first, for Tsuzuji's House to continue existing indefinitely; second, to erase the main cause that tried to demolish it; third, to erase themselves from the memories of everyone involved with Tsuzuji so they can leave without causing trouble. Ayame wants to revive the Director but reluctantly agrees to the plan.[14]

  • Rumors spread that magical girls are collapsing after fights. The suspects are believed to be magical girls using their powers to cause it. Another rumor claims Hazuki and Ayame's team is responsible.[14]
  • The following day, Kako and Felicia warn Ayame and Hazuki about the rumors. Kako says Nanaka believes they are being set up.[14]
    • The trio meets Yachiyo. She explains Momoko was attacked and briefly lost consciousness. Someone is blaming the trio. Yachiyo says she was present and their magical signatures do not match, so she knows they are innocent. She apologizes and leaves.[14]
  • The next day, Konoha suggests leaving Kamihama. Hazuki argues they should stay and clear their names. Ayame agrees with Hazuki. Konoha reluctantly agrees to stay longer.[14]

  • One evening, Konoha and Ayame go to buy bentos. At the store, Rena and Kaede confront them. Rena wants to fight to see the truth. Konoha fights Rena. Yachiyo arrives and tells them to stop. Suddenly Ayame collapses.[14]

    • Ayame steps in front of her, saying this is wrong. Konoha tries to move past but is blocked by Yachiyo.[14]
    • Hazuki and Momoko arrive. Hazuki reveals she has been working with Momoko to find the culprit. Konoha is hurt. Hazuki says they need to trust others. Konoha cries, admitting she is scared of losing anyone else important.[14]
    • Ayame reveals she made friends with Kako. Hazuki admits she suggested keeping it a secret. Konoha flashes back to the Director telling them to support each other.[14]
    • Kako arrives. She properly introduces herself to Konoha and says Ayame is her precious friend. Konoha thanks her and asks her to look after Ayame.[14]
    • Hazuki and Momoko try to find the origin of the rumor, but the trail goes cold. Yachiyo and Konoha agree the attacker was not present when Ayame collapsed, so they vow to expose the culprit.[14]
  • After the incident, the teams develop a friendly rivalry, competing over witch hunts. Konoha tells the Director they may have found their new Tsuzuji's House.[14]
    • Kyubey speaks to the culprit, Hanna Sarasa, who attacked only Momoko and Ayame, spread the rumors, and hypnotized Konoha. She claims she did it on a whim and Kyubey notes that if witches are disasters, she is, for now, chaos.[14]

When a severe witch shortage leads magical girls from both sides to encroach on Central, conflicts erupt. After Momoko is attacked in a Barrier by someone claiming to be from the opposite side, Yachiyo and Mifuyu meet with Kanagi to negotiate. Kanagi reveals her own girls have been attacked similarly, and both incidents occurred in the same barrier. Using her mindreading powers, Kanagi confirms they are telling the truth.[15]
    • As tensions escalate with more attacks on both sides, Yachiyo and Mifuyu investigate the barrier themselves and discover it belongs to the Mirror Witch, which separates them and weakens Mifuyu's magic. They retreat, realizing something larger is at play.[15]
  • A few days later, stories of East and West fighting in Central spread. Yachiyo beats up girls from Sankyou and Sakae when they try to push past her.[15]
  • A day later, the stalemate continues as Westsiders want to incorporate Central into their territory, which Yachiyo warns would create greater conflict.[15]
    • The situation worsens with more fights and casualties. Mifuyu meets Hinano in Central, who berates her for allowing the chaos and agrees to help calm Central's girls only if Mifuyu takes real action. When Mel is accused of an attack she could not have committed, Mifuyu realizes someone is deliberately pitting both sides against each other. She spreads the word hoping to stop the fighting.[15]
  • At their next meeting, Kanagi confirms all attacked girls were in the same witch's barrier. They deduce the Mirror Witch is responsible and decide to return together.[15]
    • They find the barrier has grown, fed by the conflicts. Inside, they are separated and confronted by mirror duplicates. Mifuyu defeats her duplicate, which taunts her about losing her powers. She rescues Kanagi from a duplicate Yachiyo. After confirming identities using Kanagi's powers, they find the others and defeat more duplicates before withdrawing, exhausted.[15]
    • Outside, they realize they cannot simply prohibit entry to Central. Kanagi and Mifuyu devise a plan: they will require anyone who wants to negotiate with Central to first defeat the Mirror Witch, while guaranteeing Central's safety and establishing punishments for pact-breakers. As they part, Mifuyu asks Kanagi to help Yachiyo if she is no longer around. Kanagi promises.[15]
  • The Witch would eventually be lured to an abandoned building on the Eastside using Mirrors, with a supervisor keeping others away.[15]

    • After his death, Kyubey appears to her. Nanaka wishes for the power to exact her family's revenge by her own hand. She gains the power to identify who her enemies are. This ability makes her realize the target of her revenge is not a student but a Witch. This witch behaves like a locust swarm, causing calamities in one area before migrating. The Locust Witch also controls the current head of her father's school via a Witch's Kiss, as well a being responsible for several issues in Kamihama.[16]
  • Alina Gray wins a Modern Art award for a self‑portrait. Students at her school spread a rumor that she could not think of anything to make, snapped all the wood in the prep room, and only got the idea to paint herself when she was about to break the canvas. She had a junior take a photo, then drew herself and coated the image in sand. Alina overhears this while at school. In the clubroom, she takes the strawberry milk from Karin, who says it is mean, but Alina says it is meaner to gossip. Karin reminds Alina that she was happy to win and was the one who took the photo, but Alina dismisses her and leaves, thinking she creates art simply to create.[17]
    • Alina is called to the teacher's room to meet a judge, but she refuses and runs away. A teacher scolds her, but Alina remains obstinate and eventually flees. Karin later finds her at a restaurant and gives her a letter from the judge. The letter says her work is beautiful and arcane enough to drive viewers insane, but it has no external theme and is like a powerful drug. It warns her to stop creating if she does not want to change the world, because her brilliance will probably run out by age fifteen. Alina does not understand the letter, but it affects her deeply.[17]
    • Alina visits an art gallery exhibiting her works. She reviews a poster of her past works, which explains that her parents ran an art gallery, and after her dog and grandparents died at age eight, she became fascinated with the boundary between life and death. She created her first artwork at eleven and later drew a picture using charcoal from carbonized corpses. She admits she does not know why she creates art. In the clubroom, she destroys a painting she worked on all week, saying it is not exciting or emotional enough. Karin tries to show her manga, but Alina asks what theme Karin has in mind, and Karin says she draws to make readers feel better. Alina realizes Karin has something she lacks.[17]
  • Alina decides her brilliance will fade at fifteen, so she plans a final artwork: destroying herself. Kyubey appears and offers her a contract, but she refuses to solve her problems with a wish, saying it would not be herself anymore. She wishes for "an area where nobody can disturb me," then jumps off a roof with a video camera recording. She lands in a field of flowers, but she survives.[17]
  • While unconscious, Alina realizes she always had a theme: her own beauty. She wakes up in the hospital and finds Karin crying. Alina admits she does not feel alive, but Karin grabs her hands and says she is alive. Karin gives her a copy of her manga and leaves.[17]
    • Touka Satomi and Nemu Hiiragi visit Alina in the hospital. They were the ones who found her. Alina thanks them. Touka asks if she is the famous Alina Gray, and Nemu says her artwork "Psychedelic Adolescent Hymn" had many young visitors. Nemu gives her a flyer about her art. Alina realizes it is a picture of her destroying her artwork. Touka and Nemu ask for her thanks and want to talk with her. Alina is confused but agrees.[17]
    • Afterward, Kyubey appears and says Touka and Nemu have the same potential she does. He explains that becoming a Magical Girl saved her life. Alina admits her final artwork failed, but she found her theme, and she will not stop creating. She transforms and enters a Witch's barrier, laughing as she fights. She declares that her next art will be made from Witches, and she will show everyone her beauty until they become drunk on it.[17]
  • At some point during this time, Touka Satomi reads a book written by her uncle titled “Magical Girls: Their Hope and Despair.” Her uncle asks readers to keep an open mind to all possibilities. He describes how civilization exists thanks to Magical Girls. This iss Touka’s first exposure to the world of Magical Girls. Touka loves the book, though her father disapproves. She wonders if the book had anything to do with her uncle’s disappearance. She reads about a creature called “Kyubey” and assumes the name is a code or acronym. She decides to search the internet for information.[18]
  • The next day, Touka is at the hospital. She learns that Ui is soon to be discharged as she had mysteriously recovered from her illness. Nemu is surprised at how quickly Ui recovered, and Touka is glad Ui is better, but sad to see her friend go. She would rather Ui be alive and well than close to death, as she was when she lost consciousness and her brain activity almost ceased. Touka says she would not mind becoming a Magical Girl if it were for Ui’s sake and hopes Ui will still visit them. Ui promises to visit when she returns for follow‑up tests. She swears she will not visit any of the places on their map until both Touka and Nemu are well enough to join her.[18]
    • Later that night, Touka awakens in a bizarre world: a Witch’s barrier. She calls out for Nemu and Ui, who were also pulled in. Ui points to a familiar nearby and Touka begins to hyperventilate. The familiar approaches, but they're saved by Iroha, in her Magical Girl form. Kyubey calls to Iroha, telling her the direction the Witch is heading. Iroha is more concerned about her sister and her friends and Touka recognizes the creature before her as Kyubey.[18]
  • Some time later, Touka is safe at home and Kyubey appears before her. Touka asks if she qualifies to be a Magical Girl. Kyubey asks what she would like to wish for. Touka has several questions first. She attempts to hack into the hivemind that all Kyubeys share. Before she can tap into the network, Kyubey teleports out of the room and severs the connection. Kyubey warns that if he had not severed the connection, all of her computers would have been fried. Kyubey offers to answer any questions. They talk long into the night.[18]
    • The next morning, Touka returns to the hospital and finds Nemu and Ui talking about Iroha. Iroha has not stopped fighting monsters since the barrier incident. Ui is worried it may be taking a toll on her sister. Nemu is not sure how they can help without knowing what is going on. Touka confidently declares that Iroha must be a Magical Girl. Nemu thinks Touka is joking, but she is serious. She relays everything she learned from Kyubey.[18]
    • Touka then explains her plan to save Iroha from her fate of turning into a Witch. The pros of being a Magical Girl are a healthy body with increased stamina. The con is that you must battle Witches until one day you become a Witch. If they can remove that fate, there will be no downsides to becoming a Magical Girl. This would also benefit mankind. If they can eliminate the need for Grief Seeds, no girl would have to become a Witch.[18]
    • Touka does not believe Kyubey would allow a wish to erase the fate of all Magical Girls. Instead, they will each wish to steal one of Kyubey’s powers. Ui will wish for the power to harvest impurities and pass them to Touka. Touka will wish for the power to convert impurities into magic that all Magical Girls can use. She will pass this magic to Nemu, who will wish for the power to manifest that magic into an automatic purification system. In theory, the three of them will create a system that gathers energy automatically and delivers it to outer space to combat entropy, just like Kyubey does. Ui understands the plan and agrees.[18]
  • The next late afternoon, in front of the hospital, Kyubey meets Touka, Nemu, and Ui. He asks for their wishes. They make their wishes for the different powers Kyubey possesses, where Ui wishes for his ability to absorb impurities, Touka for his power to transform energy, and Nemu for his ability to manifest. Kyubey warns they may not have enough karmic energy and that even he does not know what will happen. They agree to make the wishes for all their dreams. As their wishes are granted, Kyubey’s ear rings fall off. He shrinks into a small Kyubey, Lil' Kyubey.[18]
    • The girls stare at the shrunken Kyubey and Touka begins to commence their plan. Ui’s face contorts in pain and she screams. Her ability to harvest impurities automatically overwhelms her with the massive amounts of despair she is absorbing. If they do not hurry, Ui will become a Witch before they can act.[18]
    • Touka attempts to convert the impurities into magic, yet the amount of despair is too much and Touka cannot keep up without burning through all her magic. Nemu attempts to manifest some magic, but the despair is far too much for either of them. Alina appears, bothered by the large amounts of impurities gathering there. She transforms and uses her magic to create a forcefield around the hospital. This cuts off the impurities Ui keeps absorbing.[18]
    • However, Ui’s Soul Gem has already absorbed a disturbing amount of despair and it is at risk of becoming a Witch at any moment. Nemu decides to risk everything by manifesting one of her stories. Without their human personality and emotions, a Witch cannot be created, thus Nemu plans to take Ui’s soul out of her body. Touka points out that without a vessel, Ui’s soul will dissipate and Nemu spies the small empty Kyubey. Since Incubators have no emotion or personality of their own, she decides to house Ui’s soul there. She does not know what might happen, but this is the only plan that may work until they can figure out what to do and return Ui’s soul to her body. Nemu manifests one of her stories as an Uwasa and the process is completed.[18]
      • Ui's existence is wiped from everyone's memory, and so are all traces of her existence due to this process. Ui's body turns retains her unique magic to collect impurities and it turns into a Witch-like form.[18]
    • Once the transfer is complete, Alina finds she cannot remember why she came to the hospital roof. She recalls she came to check on Touka and Nemu, but she cannot remember the reason. She remembers jumping from the roof of the hospital and how Touka and Nemu were the ones to find her. She was checked into the same hospital as them. She told them about the many places in Kamihama. She saved them when a Witch attacked. She then discovered a Half‑Witch in the hospital lobby that was absorbing energy. She saved Touka and Nemu from it afterwards.[18]
    • They talked and came up with a plan to use the Half‑Witch to achieve their goals. Alina wanted to use Witches as material for her best artwork yet. Touka wanted to become healthy and make a deal with Kyubey to learn about the universe. Nemu also wished to become healthy and use the world as her parchment. With the automatic purification system in place, they could sustain the universe while also isolating their world from Kyubey and make all of their dreams a reality.[18]
    • The girls now believe they have successfully captured the Half‑Witch and contracted at just the right time. They turn to Alina and offer her some of their magic so she can extend the hospital’s forcefield to encompass all of Kamihama and keep Kyubey out.[18]
  • Some time later, inside Hanna, Mikoto experiences their shared memories and feels the warmth of their friendship, which softens the hatred consuming her from when she became a Witch. When Mikoto appears before Hanna as a sort of apparition only she could see, Hanna reveals she had always sensed Mikoto's presence and was overjoyed to see her again, though neither could touch the other. After they come to understand their situation, Hanna suggests they destroy the city together, seeking revenge against the system that betrayed them. Mikoto agrees, and they begin using enthralled Witches to sow chaos and make Magical Girls fight each other. They move constantly to avoid attachment, targeting families and schools while collecting Grief Seeds to sustain themselves.[13]
  • Nanaka meets with Meiyui, Akira, and Kako, asking for their help fighting the Locust Witch they all have a connection to. To explain, Nanaka tells them how she became a Magical Girl and what her magic allowed her to surmise. She explains the Witch is also behind incidents in Kamihama where people were forced to sell their land, which connects to Meiyui, as well as causing Kako's bookstore to burn down, and even Akira met Nanaka while fighting one of the Witch's Familiars.[16]
    • Akira and Kako quickly agree to help. Meiyui also agrees but says she cannot follow Nanaka's orders as a member of the Blue Seas family. Nanaka is fine with this, claiming the details are unimportant. Her plan is to investigate suspicious areas until they find the Witch's Barrier and then destroy it together.[16]
  • Soon, Nanaka's team are able to track down and defeat the Witch. Meiyui is impressed by how Nanaka reacted to her actions rather than giving orders, thus she also accepts Nanaka as her leader. However, Nanaka explains it is not over, as the Witch they defeated was only a copy created from a fully grown Familiar.[16]
    • Afterward, Nanaka speaks with Kyubey about a secret. In the past, she found a Soul Gem while chasing a familiar. She then found the seemingly dead body of a girl. She placed the Soul Gem in the girl's hands, and the girl started breathing again. Kyubey explains that Soul Gems are the extracted souls of magical girls.[16]
    • Kyubey asks if Nanaka will tell the other magical girls the secret. Nanaka says she is waiting for the right moment. Then she thinks about her true revenge target: Kyubey. Her power makes it clear he is her enemy. She is waiting for the right time to turn against him.[16]
  • Days later, Nanaka's team is still unable to find the original Locust Witch. Akira says she met a magical girl mercenary and as the girls plan their next move, Nanaka muses about how she is gathering the determination of magical girls, waiting for the right moment.[16]
  • While passing through a cemetery, Mikoto sees her mother crying before a tombstone with her name on it. She confesses to Hanna that she lied about her family and school. Hanna admits she suspected the truth from their exchange diary. To make Mikoto happy, they vandalize Mikoto's school together, also writing her honest feelings on a blackboard before escaping through a window, feeling truly free for the first time.[13]
    • Hanna uses Mikoto's pen from their diary and vows to prepare what Mikoto truly wanted.[12]
  • The Azalea sisters flee through the rain after being cornered by other Magical Girls, escaping using Ayame's magic but remaining on the run, accused of attacking their own kind.[19]
  • Days pass as the sisters hide in an abandoned house. Konoha explains she has been investigating the original incidents with Yachiyo, meeting regularly at a shrine to exchange information, though their investigation has stalled.[19]
  • The day before the confrontation, Nanaka's team visits Mitama. Nanaka theorizes a Magical Girl capable of controlling Witches is behind the incidents. Mitama recalls a girl with suggestion magic named Mikoto Sena and directs them to Kanagi, who had met her.[19]
    • Late that night, Kanagi meets Nanaka in a park. Kanagi confirms Mikoto's existence but reveals Mikoto and her family disappeared. She asks to investigate Mikoto herself.[19]
    • Around the same time, Reira learns from her mother about a strange girl asking questions at her apartment complex. Reira, Seika, and Mito investigate and discover the girl is Kanagi.[19]
  • The next day, the trio confronts Kanagi. Using Mito's power, they enter Kanagi's memories and learn about Mikoto's friend, Hanna Sarasa, who can copy a girl's unique magic.[19]
    • That same day, Ayame secretly meets Kako at a park. Both girls are manipulated by suggestion magic, causing them to argue. Nanaka intervenes, but Ayame runs off crying. Nanaka realizes an enemy Magical Girl is responsible.[19]
    • Meanwhile, Hanna's realized that Mikoto's persona consumes magic like fuel and will vanish permanently if she runs out. Her own Soul Gem deteriorates rapidly from sharing her magic, and her Grief Seed collection is nearly empty. Mikoto's hatred grows stronger as she has visions of Magical Girls becoming Witches, coming from her connection to her Witch, and she struggles to control herself. When she confesses she is on borrowed time, they have their first fight, and Mikoto disappears from shame.[13]
    • She soon returns to find Hanna's Soul Gem nearly black, with no Grief Seeds left and no power to hunt Witches. Hanna reflects on her life, admitting she no longer believes in her old wish to erase people she hated. She tells Mikoto that evil must be defeated or there will be nothing worth saving. Mikoto asks to die together, but Hanna refuses, saying she is happy.[13]
    • Back at the hideout, Konoha and Hazuki don't remember Ayame leaving. Ayame accuses them of tricking her. Konoha realizes they are being manipulated.[19]
    • Tsuruno bursts in, followed by Yachiyo, Nanaka's team, and the Mito trio. Reira reveals Hanna Sarasa as the culprit. As she speaks the name, Hanna reveals herself, admits everything, freezes everyone with her magic, and flees.[19] Hanna had deliberately made herself easy to find because she wants to be defeated, believing it will prove there are still good things in the world.[13]
    • The group splits up to search. The Konoha sisters find Hanna in an abandoned building. She admits she framed them because it was fun. Yachiyo and Tsuruno join the fight, but Hanna escapes again.[19]
    • The Mito trio waits on a rooftop. Hanna arrives and hints that Mikoto defeated a Witch but lost in the end. She prepares to kill Mito, but Akira blocks the attack. Nanaka's team arrives and fights Hanna.[19]
    • Nanaka appears and attacks, having used her team until then to wear Hanna down. Hanna reveals she knew Nanaka before she became a Magical Girl and deliberately ruined her life. Nanaka breaks free and attacks Hanna. During the battle, Nanaka targets Hanna's Soul Gem but hesitates to deliver the final blow.[19] Frustrated, Hanna grabs her own Soul Gem back from Nanaka as Mikoto pleads with her not to do what she intends. In the last moment, Hanna uses her magic to force Mikoto's persona into another Magical Girl nearby, then shatters her own Soul Gem while Mikoto screams.[13] After Hanna dies, her spirit hugs Mikoto's and tells her she loves her, however Mikoto cannot see or perceive her.[20]
    • Mikoto falls into darkness until warm light surrounds her, and Hanna appears one last time. She explains her plan did not fail, telling Mikoto to look at the city that night. Hanna will bear their sins alone, but Mikoto has to live.[13]
    • Hanna'd copied Mikoto's Transplant magic and sends her to inhabit a Magical Girl on top of an observation deck. This girl ends up being Alina. Through Alina's eyes, Mikoto watches as building lights turn off and on one by one, forming a message visible from above: HAPPY BIRTHDAY. She realizes Hanna spent all their time together preparing this gift, marking every location so the city she hates will celebrate her existence. Though her hatred remains, Mikoto decides she will live, forever remembering this scene seared into her eyes as she whispers goodbye to Hanna.[13]
    • Later, the survivors gather at Mitama's. Nanaka tells most that Hanna used suggestion magic on herself. Only those who already knew learn the truth about her destroying her own Soul Gem. Nanaka and Yachiyo explain to Konoha that Soul Gems contain a Magical Girl's soul. Konoha cries, lamenting she caused her sisters to contract.[19]
  • Sometime later, life returns to normal. Asuka apologizes to Hazuki, who accepts. On a rooftop, Nanaka and Konoha discuss Hanna's final words about incoming danger they would all be facing. Konoha reflects that despite everything, Hanna brought them together. Nanaka fears similar darkness could emerge again.[19]

  • In the Mitakihara suburbs, Mami Tomoe fights a Witch and Kyoko Sakura arrives and assists in the battle. They note the strange decline in Witch populations in their respective territories of Mitakihara and Kazamino and Kyoko states she will share any information she finds.[21]
  • Over the next several days, Mami investigates cities outside Mitakihara and Kazamino and she finds the Witch populations have declined in those areas as well. Kyubey confirms this is a widespread trend reported by other Magical Girls, though it has not verified every city.[21]
  • Several days later, Mami travels to Kamihama City and she immediately finds a powerful Witch, confirming that the city is an exception to the decline. She also detects strange, non-Witch magical traces throughout the city, but due to the late hour, Mami ends her investigation for the day but resolves to uncover the secrets of Kamihama.[21]
  • Iroha Tamaki lives a disconnected life in Takarazaki City, where she feels like an outsider among her classmates and only feels at ease with her family. Nagisa's Wish

  • In Mitakihara, Nagisa Momoe tells her teacher about something her mother did to her. The teacher asks if Nagisa was misbehaving and she admits she broke a dish.[23]
    • On her way home, Kyubey appears and asks if Nagisa wants to become a Magical Girl, with this not being the first time he has done so. Nagisa refuses and Kyubey points out Nagisa's malnutrition, her messy home, and her bad personal relationships. Nagisa admits he has a point but argues that people who have their wishes granted in stories always become unhappy. She asks what wish she needs most. Kyubey says her best wish would be "I want to be given concern and kindness from a certain person" or "I want to be loved." Nagisa says she is loved enough, which Kyubey expected. Nagisa thinks about how she likes reading sad stories because it makes her heart feel lighter, making her feel like she could be saved and how she could not understand when someone asked her what her hopes and wishes were.[23]
    • Later, Inui Itsumi contacts Kyubey about a Magical Girl called the "Sleepwalking Ghost" who kills bad people. Inui worries the Ghost might target Shou, the boy she likes. Kyubey says there is a high probability Shou is on the list and that Inui hasn't killed a Witch in ten days. Inui says she will ask the Ghost herself and Kyubey organizes to meet with Inui again the next day.[23]
  • The next day, Nagisa's classmates invite her to buy candy after class, but she lies and says she is visiting her mother at the hospital. Kyubey appears and offers to take Nagisa on a Witch hunt with an older Magical Girl. Nagisa reluctantly agrees. She asks why ordinary humans cannot help Magical Girls and Kyubey says they cannot stand up to Witches.[23]
    • Inui never shows up and Kyubey admits he did not tell her he was bringing Nagisa. Nagisa says it was a waste of time and goes home. Kyubey confronts Inui about standing him up, but Inui refuses to mentor a young girl, feeling tricked into meeting with Nagisa. Kyubey pressures her and Inui changes the subject to the Sleepwalking Ghost and says she is against Kyubey contracting Nagisa.[23]
    • Kyubey finds Nagisa shopping for cheese to bring her mother at the hospital. Kyubey notes she should get something more nutritionally balanced, though Nagisa says it's just her mother's favorite, and that Nagisa doesn't even like cheese. Nagisa says her mother used to be on television but got sick after marrying her father, who abandoned the family. Nagisa wonders if her mother would not have gotten sick if she had not married him.[23]
    • Kyubey leads Nagisa into a Witch's Barrier, where they're saved by a bizarre Magical Girl named Yu who easily defeats the Witch. Yu is the Sleepwalking Ghost and she explains she kills bad people using a list that updates automatically. She has forgotten everything from before she became a Magical Girl and she notes Nagisa's last name appears on the list, though that person's house had been messy and nobody was inside. Nagisa recognizes the name of her mother on the list and says that person must have moved away.[23]
    • Yu says she made a promise and thinks killing witches and bad people will help her remember it. She sells what is useful from the bodies so they don't go to waste, dumping the rest into Labyrinths so they disappear with the Witches she kills, and Kyubey calls Yu an abnormality. Yu tells Nagisa to stop enduring so much, including Kyubey, and focus on being free instead and the two depart.[23]
    • Later on, Inui encounters Yu and attacks her. Yu insists Shou is a bad person but Inui calls her a liar. Yu says her list updates automatically and Inui should not have trouble if Shou is killed, which enrages her more.[23]
    • Nagisa visits her mother at the hospital with the cheese, telling Kyubey to wait outside and afterwards, she will make the wish to heal her mom, hoping her mom will be grateful in return. Her mother says the cheee is too much and is upset after seeing Nagisa's father didn't visit her. Nagisa tells her mother about the wish which will save her, and that she is happy to be her daughter, yet her mother angrily tells her to abandon her and leave. She says curing her will not change anything because it is all because Nagisa was born.[23]
    • Nagisa returns to Kyubey, meeting with him at night in a playground and makes her wish: "I want the tastiest cheesecake in the whole world!" She specifies the cheesecake should be made for her mother's tastes, intending to have her mom die because Nagisa specifically didn't save her.[23]
    • Kyubey finds Inui near the hospital, horribly injured by Yu. Inui's Soul Gem has reached its limit and she asks Kyubey to kill her. Kyubey refuses, saying that by becoming a witch, Inui has finally become useful. Inui becomes the Witch Uhrmann and her Barrier engulfs the hospital, including Nagisa's mother's hospital room.[23]
    • Kyubey tells Nagisa to escape as she's too weak, yet she says she can decide for herself now and if she can make her mom feel grateful or regretful, she will do anything. She confronts Uhrmann and is knocked unconscious. Yu soon arrives and kills the Witch. Nagisa wakes up and Kyubey tells her Yu was the one who saved her, so she rushes to her mother. After she leaves, he notes he had high hopes for Nagisa, yet she will not survive past that night and that he'll have Mami Tomoe handle this part of the territory as well. She finds that Yu has attacked her mother, with Yu realizing the connection between the two. Nagisa tells Yu to leave and she does, saying she will keep being on Nagisa's side in the future.[23]
    • Nagisa's mother says a monster with a torn mouth and a horn attacked her. She begs Nagisa not to leave her alone and repeatedly begs for an answer until she dies. The entire time, Nagisa says nothing and looks at her in despair. Nagisa becomes the Witch Charlotte all alone. The last thing she sees is a landscape full of sweets, where she can live without having to forgive or hate anyone. But there was no cheese for her mother.[23]

My Diary With You

  • Ren stands on a rooftop, contemplating another suicide attempt, when Kyubey warns that repeating her actions will destroy her Soul Gem. Rika saves her after defeating a nearby Witch, and Ren reflects on her childhood bullying, her first suicide attempt, and her wish to live, which then led her to destroy Witches only to realize humanity's cruelty remains. Unable to explain her despair to Rika, Ren is introduced to a community of Magical Girls in Emiri's who each offer her small kindnesses: Ria gives her hand cream and Konomi gives her chamomile tea. Then they visit the chemistry club where Hinano gives Ren candy, and in the end the group meets Kanoko at her family's metal factory. There, after Ren compliments a dress Kanoko designed, she gives Ren accessories made of metal sheets. Later, Rika shares her own story of wishing for someone's love, explaining that connection requires vulnerability. When Ren still cannot speak her truth, Rika reminds her that all these people were thinking of her, giving her a reason to continue living. Ren thanks her, choosing to keep living.[24]
  • A few days before Ren's birthday, Rika notices the date on her student card while inviting her to a movie and decides to surprise her with a present.[25]
  • The next day, Rika and Ren visit a stationary shop, where Rika learns Ren draws in her diary with colored pencils.[25]
    • Later, at Emiri's consultation stand, Rika gets the idea to commission a decorated pencil case from Kanoko after seeing Emiri's phone case. Kanoko agrees to help, and her father allows them to use his factory's equipment.[25]
  • That weekend, Kanoko finalizes the material choice and makes Rika practice engraving on scrap metal daily until her skills improve.[25]
    • Ren and Rika team up to fight a Witch. Afterward, Ren comforts a victim, and Rika calls her kind. Ren reflects that she can live now because she met Rika.[25]
    • Later that day, Ren buys a cherry pink pencil, which is Rika's favorite color, continuing her tradition of buying a pencil each time she saves someone, hoping to become someone who can stand beside Rika.[25]
  • The following days, Kanoko deems Rika ready to work on the real gift. Ren sends Rika an invitation to a picture book exhibition, but Rika declines, needing time to finish.[25]
    • At Emiri's consultation stand, Ren defends Rika during a conversation with Akira. When Rika arrives, she calls them close friends and asks about Ren's drawings but respects that they're in Ren's diary.[25]
    • That evening, Ren's father gives her two tickets to a picture book exhibition. Thinking of Rika, she keeps both and emails an invitation. Rika replies she already has plans, shocking Ren.[25]
    • Ren later sees an advertisement for a teddy bear exhibition and invites Rika for the following Sunday. Rika must decline again due to gift work and supplementary lessons, leaving Ren devastated.[25]
  • The following Sunday, Ren walks through Kamihama, imagining being at the exhibition with Rika. She overhears Rika nearby, thanking Kanoko and Emiri for their help. When Emiri notices her, Rika stumbles over her words, and Ren runs off, saying it's fine.[25]
    • Later that day, Rika sends an apologetic email. Ren wants to respond but cannot, overwhelmed by envy and shame.[25]
  • The next day, Ren's mother asks if something is wrong, but Ren says nothing. In her room, she tries to write in her diary but cannot, sobbing as she realizes things cannot go back to the way they were.[25]
    • Later, Rika tells Akira that Ren has stopped responding. Kanoko and Akira advise her to talk to Ren directly. Rika heads to Ren's school, remembering her favorite place is the audiovisual room.[25]
    • At the audiovisual room, Ren receives a phone call from Rika. Rika explains she was making Ren a birthday present: twelve colored pencils in an engraved case with a Lily of the Valley motif, flowers which mean "Genuine" and "Pure."[25]
    • Rika asks Ren to open the door and gives her the present, wishing her a happy birthday. Ren cries, calling it the prettiest thing she has ever seen. As they walk home, Ren apologizes for the misunderstanding. Rika says she chose Lily of the Valley because it is perfect for Ren. Ren promises herself that one day, when she reaches the final page of her diary, she will tell Rika everything about it.[25]
    • Sometime later, Rika fights a witch alongside Hinano. Afterward, Hinano notes Rika's fighting style has changed—less reckless, more focused on helping others. Rika realizes she no longer fights to relieve stress but to help everyone, and decides she cannot change the past but can change the future.[25]
  • The next day, as Rika goes to see Ren, she reflects that she has changed because of Ren. In her mind, she tells Ren that no matter how long it takes, she will always be waiting for her.[25]

We Invite You to a Delightful Halloween!

  • Four days before Halloween, Kako and Emiri are saved from a witch by Karin, but Emiri's enthusiastic chatter embarrasses Karin into running off.[26]
  • Emiri decides to enter a costume contest to meet Karin again, dragging Kako along as a judge. Kako also recruits Natsuki to join them.[26]
  • While shopping for materials, the girls encounter Karin, who has lost her supply list. Kako invites her to shop together, and Karin gratefully accepts.[26]
  • After learning the contest was cancelled, Kako rallies the others to ask local shops to hand out candy to costumed visitors instead.[26]
  • On Halloween, the store owners' efforts create a successful celebration. Emiri entertains children with stories about "Magical Karin," and when Karin appears, surprised by the turnout, Kako simply wishes her a happy Halloween.[26]

Reaching a Happier Height

  • Masara visits Mitama for a Soul Gem adjustment and notices her staring at a flyer for a hiking rally event. When Masara explains that Kokoro keeps talking about mountain climbing because it's tied to her last happy memory with her family, she leaves the flyer behind. Mitama reads that first prize is five kilograms of rice and decides right then to make sure they win it.[27]
  • The next day, Kokoro vents to Masara about how witch hunting always gets in the way of her climbing. When Masara asks why she loves it so much, Kokoro explains that it's her favorite memory, the last thing she ever did with her family before everything changed.[27]
    • Later that day, Kokoro stops by Mitama's shop for an adjustment. Mitama casually brings up the hiking rally and Kokoro is easily convinced to participate. Momoko pays for her own adjustment while they're talking, and when Mitama asks about hiking preparation, Momoko suggests bringing water.[27]
  • The following day, Mitama drags both Masara and Kokoro to the mall without giving any explanation. While they're distracted looking around, she buys supplies on her own: amazake, salt, chocolate, and supplements. She finds them picking out a bento box together and adds bear repellent to her cart.[27]
  • The night before the rally, Kokoro and Masara visit Mitama to review their preparations. Mitama has made an extensive list that includes lip balm and selfie sticks. When Mitama brings up the event itself, Kokoro initially tries to decline because of homework. Mitama suggests Masara could help her study, and Masara reluctantly says she wouldn't mind if Kokoro went. Kokoro finally agrees, and Mitama reveals that first prize is rice. Kokoro offers to make lunch for both of them.[27]
    • After they leave, Mitama prepares what she calls a special energy drink. Momoko takes one sip and immediately collapses. Mitama fills bottles with the mixture anyway.[27]
  • The morning of the event, Kokoro calls Mitama wondering where she is. Mitama reveals she never actually planned to participate and wanted them to win the rice for her all along.[27]
    • Masara and Kokoro begin the rally together, solving questions at each checkpoint. When Kokoro suggests they stop for lunch, they find a spot to eat. Masara compliments her cooking and Kokoro admits she's been cooking for herself ever since her mother left. They discover Mitama's energy drink stuffed in their bags and sip it, which ends up slowing them down considerably.[27]
    • After clearing ten questions, they discover they're in the lead. They search for the twelfth checkpoint without success. Masara deduces it should be to the right, but her Soul Gem reacts to a Witch on the left. They defeat the Witch and lose time, but afterward they spot the checkpoint hidden in an unexpected place.[27]
    • They reach the summit with an hour still left on the clock. Kokoro tears up, overwhelmed by the memory of climbing with her family. Masara apologizes for being there instead of them, but Kokoro clarifies they're tears of joy. She tells Masara she's glad she wanted to come with her.[27]
    • After Kokoro finishes crying, Masara offers her a handkerchief. The word tears gives Masara the answer to the final question. They turn in their answers and win the rice.[27]
    • After the event ends, Kokoro hauls the heavy rice into Mitama's shop. Mitama stresses again that she never intended to go, but Kokoro and Masara point out she pushed them into shopping for supplies. Mitama offers to make them lunch and Masara declines. Mitama tells Kokoro she should thank Masara, explaining that Masara was interested in the rally specifically because hiking was Kokoro's number one memory. Kokoro thanks her sincerely. She asks if they can go again sometime. Masara says her sneakers are worn out. Kokoro suggests they buy new ones together.[27]
  • The following day, Masara returns to Mitama for another adjustment. She describes how the lunch that day seemed especially delicious and asks if Mitama understands what that means. Mitama says that feeling is difficult to put into words, but that it felt special to her.[27]

Another Daze

This event and the accompanying Side Stories follow the main team of Kazumi Magica. Regarding Kazumi, this event takes place before Kazumi meets the rest of the Pleiades, while in Magia Record, it takes place sometime after the founding of the Doppel System.

  • Kaoru, Umika, and Kazumi chase a Witch to Kamihama City and a surge of magic gets Kazumi separated from them. Kaoru finds Natsuki Utsuho fighting Familiars alone and they team up to defeat the Witch. Natsuki recognizes Kaoru as the soccer player who crushed her school's team and offers to guide her through the city. Natsuki explains Witches have increased dramatically recently.[28]
    • Meanwhile, Umika defeats a Witch and encounters Kako Natsume, who invites her to Natsume Books to discuss the search. Kako leads her to meet Akira Shinobu and Meiyui Chun. Meiyui shares information from Nanaka about sightings of an unfamiliar yellow Magical Girl in four locations.[29]
    • Natsuki and Kaoru fight another Witch together. Natsuki creates a defensive barrier to protect Kaoru, who uses the opening to defeat it.[28]
    • The group tracks Witch appearances to Chuo Ward, where they sense a Witch being defeated with Kaoru's magic signature. Umika and Kaoru reunite and agree to search for Kazumi together.[28][29]
    • Kazumi wakes on a park bench in Kamihama with no memories except her name. Tsuruno feeds her at Banbanzai. Her hair coil senses evil and she follows it, meeting Himika and Kanoko. At Himika's home, Kazumi remembers making beef stroganoff for two girls. Kanoko recognizes the novelist Umika Misaki.[30]
    • Following Kanoko's advice, Kazumi visits Emiri's consultation office. Emiri suggests searching her belongings and finds a flyer for an Asunaro cafe. Sasara arrives seeking help for Asuka who disappeared inside a Labyrinth. Kazumi insists on helping and destroys the Witch, freeing Asuka. From this, she remembers falling for the same Witch's trap with Umika and Kaoru. Asuka and Sasara suggest she find Yachiyo through Mitama. Emiri lends Kazumi a spare phone.[30]
    • Hungry, Kazumi stops at Walnut's and eats a meal she cannot pay for. Manaka appreciates her honesty and Kazumi works off the meal. Hinano arrives seeking help for writer's block and Kazumi cooks for her, remembering how Umika would cure writer's block. Hinano recognizes Kaoru's name and gives directions to a park. Kazumi searches but cannot find anyone.[31]
    • She goes back to search for Mitama's place but keeps returning to the same street. Her hair coil tingles. Yachiyo finds her inside the Uwasa and takes her to Mitama's.[30]
    • Elsewhere, Umika and Kaoru are pursued by a shadowy doppelganger of Kazumi. They ask for help from local Magical Girls and Tsuruno leads them to Emiri's office. Emiri uses her illusion magic to help them escape to Mitama's, where they find Kazumi sleeping. Yachiyo explains the doppelganger road: if the doppelganger meets the original, the original will be replaced. She reveals she escaped the road and found the real Kazumi.[30]
    • The doppelganger arrives outside. Yachiyo explains the Rumor scattered its mind in eight directions; they must capture the eight fakes in one place to reassemble Kazumi's psyche.[30]
    • The girls fight the doppelganger. Inside, Kazumi wakes in a cloud world and hears Umika and Kaoru's voices calling her as Mitama linked their Soul Gems. The smell of food guides her back. Tsuruno brings fried rice and Himika brings mushroom hotpot. Mitama links their Soul Gems to gather the scattered parts and they defeat the doppelganger permanently.[30]
    • Later, as Kazumi, Umika, and Kaoru prepare to return to Asunaro, they stop at a supermarket for ingredients. Kazumi thinks she will remember this adventure whenever she makes fried rice or mushroom soup.[30]

Kazumi Magica

Afterwards, the events of Puella Magi Kazumi Magica: The innocent malice unfold as normal in Asunaro. See the the Kazumi Magica section of the timeline for a detailed list. Detailed below are the deviations from the conventional timeline of Kazumi Magica.

  • During Satomi Usagi's rampage against the Kazumi Series, a few of them manage to survive.[32]
    • Clone 4, the most similar to the original Michiru Kazusa, saves Clones 2, 6, 7 and 10. She nurses them back to health by feeding them part of her body, which clones are able to do.[32]
    • Clone 10 makes a contract with Kyubey to make Clone 4 into the real Michiru Kazusa, turning her into a real human version of Michiru before she became a Magical Girl.[32]
    • Clone 2 wishes for Niko Kanna's ability to reform and rebuild, which she uses on the other clones to give them appearances and identities. They plan to have Michiru re-enact the life of the real Michiru, saving the clones of Umika and Kaoru, but with a happy ending.[32]
      • Clone 2 takes the identity of Niko Kanna.[32]
      • Number 6 takes the identity of Umika Misaki.[32]
      • Number 7 takes Kaoru Maki's identity.[32]
      • Clone 10 takes the identity of Saki Asami.[32]

Suzune Magica

The events featuring the characters of Suzune Magica take place at some point after Mifuyu joins the Magius. The events do have spaces of time between them, however as the amount of time is impossible to discern in regards to other events, they're all listed in this section.

  • In Hohzuki, a classmate shows Chisato a social media post about one of her father's books found in Kamihama. She resolves to travel there to find it. Arisa offers to come.[33]
  • In another city, Suzune finishes killing all Magical Girls there and enrolls in Hozuki City as her next target. Kyubey tells her about Kamihama, where no Incubator can enter and Magical Girls are gathering. Suzune comes to eliminate them, believing this will end the cycle of Magical Girls becoming Witches.[33]
  • Suzune arrives in Kamihama. She stops at a Camellia flower and thinks of Tsubaki, the Magical Girl she cared for who became a Witch and was killed by Suzune. She meets Kaede, Momoko, and Rena briefly. She later fights alongside cloaked Magical Girls, destroys the Witch effortlessly, and attacks them.
    • Mifuyu intervenes and deduces Suzune kills Magical Girls to prevent them from becoming Witches. Alina arrives and fights Suzune. Low on magic, Suzune vanishes.[34]
  • Several days later, past midnight, Kokoro enters a Witch's barrier and is surrounded. Suzune appears and destroys the Familiars. Kokoro thanks her, introduces herself, and Suzune strikes at her Soul Gem. Masara, who was following Kokoro invisibly, thwarts the attack and allows Kokoro to flee.[33]
    • Around the afternoon, Arisa and Chisato arrive in Kamihama. They encounter Momoko scolding Rena. Chisato takes Arisa to a Sayuki Fumino live show, where Arisa cries during a song. During a quiz, Arisa and Rena tie and win prizes. Afterward, they search for picture books.[35]
    • Chisato explains she loved a particular picture book from before things went bad with her father but cannot remember its title. They meet Akira, who takes them to Natsume Books. They meet Kako, who checks her files but does not find the book.[33]
    • Meanwhile, Suzune hides inside a Witch's barrier. Akira approaches her and Suzune pretends to be injured, accepting Akira's help for intel. Akira takes her to Emiri's Consultation Services. Nanaka appears and senses Suzune is their enemy. Suzune decides to lay a trap near a Witch to confirm Nanaka is a Magical Girl.[33]
    • Chisato and Arisa finish their search. Kako offers to help them search elsewhere. Outside, they argue and split up. Arisa breaks down and tells Kako about the fight. Chisato returns looking dejected and Kako tells her how serious Arisa is. They apologize.[33]
    • Suzune's trap lures Kokoro and Nanaka appears transformed. Akira is also hiding. Outnumbered, Suzune uses Heat Shimmer to disappear. Nanaka confirms Suzune is the enemy.[33]
    • Kako's father's friend owns a secondhand shop. The girls search and find "The Adventures of Dumpling Boy." Chisato buys it. She realizes she created the character as a child and her father turned it into the book. She realizes her wish may have erased this part of her father and cries.[33]
    • Meiyui joins the group. Nanaka deduces Suzune uses Witches to lure Magical Girls. They stage their deaths using Meiyui's magic to see Suzune's goal and plan to spread an online post to pressure her to leave.[33]
    • Exhausted, Suzune is photographed by men who say she matches a forum post. Feeling watched, she suspects Nanaka is setting her up and resolves to leave Kamihama. Arisa and Chisato walk home and discuss returning to Hozuki. Suzune overhears and decides to let things cool down first.[33]
    • Nanaka asks Meiyui to spread a rumor warning other Magical Girls about Suzune. The rumor warps and becomes the urban legend of the "Ripper Girl" in Hozuki City.[33]
  • During one of the following days at school, Arisa notices Chisato worrying. Chisato reveals she agreed to read a picture book to children but needs to write one herself. Arisa recruits Matsuri and Haruka to help. They regroup in three days to share ideas.[36]
  • Three days later, they share ideas. None are suitable for children. Chisato asks for more time.[36]
  • A few days later, Chisato presents a completed story combining their ideas. They refine it, draw the art, and title it "The Four Girls and the White Rabbit." The children enjoy it.[36]
    • Back at school, Chisato reflects on her father. After her mother died, he turned his resentment toward her. Chisato wished for a kind father, and as a result he stopped writing. She bears the guilt. Arisa reminds her the past and present are separate, and Chisato begins to believe things will be okay.[36]
  • The rumor of the Ripper spreads to Hohzuki, prompting Chisato and her friends to investigate in Kamihama. Suzune travels there alone, unaware Matsuri is among the group.[37]
    • The group splits up. They learn the Memory Ripper changes forms, announces itself with a bell, and demands a name. Arisa and Matsuri encounter it and are attacked. Arisa wakes having forgotten her wish and reverted to her meek personality.[37]
    • The girls are picked off one by one. They deduce refusing to give Ripper their names causes it to absorb them instead. Using this knowledge, they recover everyone. Suzune remains trapped until Matsuri recovers her memories and frees her. Haruka deduces the true name is Suzunone.[37]
    • Suzunone thanks her and disappears. A mysterious voice interrupts. Outside, everything is rewritten. Arisa and Matsuri are back to normal with false memories. Suzune is gone. The girls dismiss the odd feeling and go sightseeing.[37]
    • The girls split up. Haruka ends up at the museum with Natsuki and Aimi. They encounter two sisters who had a fight. The younger sister wishes her older sibling would disappear, and the older sister receives a Witch's Kiss and vanishes into a barrier.[38]
    • Haruka is haunted by memories of her wish to erase her older sister Kanata out of jealousy, only to wake up as the sole person who remembers her.[38]
    • After defeating the Witch, the sisters reconcile. Haruka insists she is fine.[38]
    • Meanwhile, Matsuri becomes fascinated by Kanoko's fungal hair scrunchies and Kanoko invites her home. They encounter Manaka, who needs a design to win a bet. Matsuri offers the scrunchies and receives ghost mushrooms. At Kanoko's home, Matsuri asks to learn metalworking and decides to make taiyaki-shaped earrings.[39]
    • They search for taiyaki and meet Ikumi, Ayaka, Hinano, and Emiri along the way. Matsuri reveals she was born blind and wished to see. Kanoko takes her to Mitama for taiyaki information.[39]
    • Mitama gives them a poster for free taiyaki at a cliffside location. They meet Himika and enjoy taiyaki at sunset. Matsuri reflects on her first sunset after gaining her sight and thanks Kanoko.[39]
    • That night, Kagari drags an unconscious Suzune out of Kamihama. She berates Kyubey and returns Suzune to Hohzuki after ensuring she has forgotten everything.[37]
  • Kagari arrives in Kamihama and is approached by the reborn Rumor of the May Bells of Happiness. It creates a world matching Kagari's wishes. Those invited have their minds pulled into the dream while their bodies remain in the real world. Tsubaki's consciousness is pulled from a point before her death. The dream shows Kagari, Matsuri, Suzune, and Tsubaki moving to Kamihama and befriending Aimi, Kokoro, and Masara.[40]
    • Tsubaki and the three girls move to Kamihama. Tsubaki shares her past with Suzune. She lost her parents to a Witch and was taken in by Yoriko, who ran a kendo dojo. Yoriko later followed Tsubaki into a Labyrinth and was killed. Tsubaki shows Suzune a bell charm that is Yoriko's keepsake.[41]
    • Matsuri brings Kokoro home. Tsubaki teaches kendo to Suzune, Matsuri, and Kokoro. Tsubaki reflects on her rival Ichika and expresses hope the girls will build a similar bond.[41]
    • They detect a Witch and find a woman and child under a Witch's Kiss. They enter the Labyrinth, joined by Kagari. Tsubaki defeats the Witch. The child reconciles with her adoptive mother.[41]
    • Tsubaki hangs a photograph of herself with Yoriko and Ichika. She hopes to protect the girls as Yoriko protected her.[41]
    • After school, the group defeats a Witch together and discovers May bells blooming out of season. Kagari feels something is off.[40]
    • Tsubaki, Matsuri, and Aimi go shopping. They hear a voice and smell a floral scent Tsubaki cannot detect. They follow it into a Labyrinth, defeat the Witch, and find more May bells.[40]
    • After investigation, they witness revelations: Aimi learns Tsubaki died, Suzune and Masara see Tsubaki died years ago, and Kokoro witnesses young Kagari making a contract to wish for revenge on Suzune for killing Tsubaki.[40]
    • In reality, Natsuki explains to Nanaka and Akira how she found Aimi catatonic. Nanaka theorizes Tsubaki's consciousness was brought from the past and warns those in the illusion may vanish.[40]
    • Matsuri learns the full truth and remembers Tsubaki's last words. She decides to save everyone even if it means losing Tsubaki. Tsubaki faces Suzune and Kagari, who beg her to stay. Tsubaki refuses and says goodbye as the illusion collapses. Tsubaki awakens in her own time with no memory of what happened but feels warm.[40]
    • Everyone awakens in reality and Kagari rewrites everyone's memories and disappears. Matsuri and Suzune feel warmth but cannot remember. Kagari, alone, reveals her memories returned and she was acting. She resents Matsuri and vows to make Suzune suffer.[40]
  • What becomes of this version of Kagari is unknown, but the events of Arc 2 hint that Suzune, Matsuri, and Haruka are still alive years later.

The Ultimate Record

  • From the Law of Cycles, at the corner of the universe, Ultimate Madoka, the goddess of all Magical Girls sits watching over countless records, each one the song of a girl she has blessed. One day she discovers a record she does not recognize, though she should know every one. When she plays it, she hears familiar songs at first, but then an unfamiliar voice rings out—a Magical Girl whose song she has never heard before.[42]
    • Flustered, the goddess tries to sing her blessing onto the record, but her voice leaves no mark. She cannot carve into this record at all. Growing anxious, she listens more closely and discovers that a new groove is actually being carved even now, still in progress. The songs on this record are not finished being written. If she forces her blessing now, the record might break.[42]
    • She decides to watch over it instead, knowing that when it is complete, she may have to destroy it if its songs prove to be bad. Even the goddess does not know what she will do when that time comes.[42]
