This article showcases known the historical events in the universe of Puella Magi Madoka Magica. For more detail on the original anime, see Madoka Magica Timeline. For more detail on the Magia Record game, see Magia Record Timeline. For coverage of the time loops, different timelines and universes, see Timelines.

Due to the production notes of the original series, whose canonicity is questionable, there are unconfirmable differences to what has been shown in Magia Record. Thus, the historical events revealed in Magia Record are considered a separate continuity from the original until proven otherwise.

Original Universe

75,000 Years Ago

  • Incubators find Earth and the Homo sapiens race.
  • Incubators arrive on Earth.
  • The first magical girl is born, using her wish to save humanity from the mass extinction event that wiped out the Homo erectus.[1]

38th Millennium BCE - 13th Century CE

  • Cleopatra VII becomes a Magical Girl in the 1st century BCE. She dies by snakebite. It is unknown whether she became a witch.[2]
  • Himiko becomes a Magical Girl in the 3rd century CE. She succumbs to despair as her palace burns down around her, but it is unknown whether she falls to the flames or becomes a witch.[3]

14th Century CE - 15th Century CE

  • In 1385, at the age of fourteen, Isabeau de Bavière was sent to France to wed the king. There, she was approached by Cube to make a contract with him. After asking many questions about the Magical Girl System and the Incubators' very nature, she wished for everything Cube possessed and, among other things, gained the power to make contracts herself.[4]
  • For the following decades, Isabeau makes contracts with many girls, causing them to lose their souls and become mindless servants to her. Isabeau's first victim was a servant, who was tricked by Isabeau to wish for her fidelity to Isabeau for as long as she lived. Among the ones she contracts is her own daughter Corbeau, who wishes to become a Magical Girl specialized in fighting Magical Girls, so her sisters wouldn't need to fight.[5]
  • At some point, after 1422, Isabeau uses too much of her magic and becomes a Witch. Lapin overturns this process by making a wish to the Witch itself so that Isabeau would go back to how she was. This causes Isabeau's Witch mind to inhabit her human body and continue her plans.
    • Afterwards, an unknown amount of time after Lapin's wish, Minou makes a wish to Isabeau for Isabeau to not be defeated by any type of magical girl in existence, which made her invulnerable to any kind of attack from magical girls.
  • Riz Hawkwood becomes a Magical Girl with the wish to be the one from whom a new, true hero would spring. Afterwards, she travelled Europe with Cube in search of this hero to fulfill her wish.[6]
    • The first candidate she met was referred to as "Machete", with the same age as Riz. She would die in battle against a Witch after her Soul Gem broke.[7]
    • The second was referred to as "Frusta", who was older than Riz. She would also die in battle against a Witch.[8]
    • The third and fourth were twins, where one is referred as "Falce" and the other one "Lancia", who were younger than Riz. Lancia would become a Witch and afterwards, Falce believed Riz and Cube had planned this, so she turned against them, forcing Riz to kill her as well.[9][10]
  • Elisa Celjska, being the illegitimate daughter of the Holy Roman Empress and a member of the Order of the Dragon, was exiled by the court until she meets Pernelle and Cube and becomes a magical girl. She makes the wish for everyone to acknowledge her existence and her and her mother were forgiven and brought back to the court. Elisa then began to use her powers for the Emperor and being sent all over Europe in missions by the Order of the Dragon.

Tart Magica

Year 1997

  • Kosane Kiriha and Eruna Kiriha make a contract with Kyubey while in the womb.
  • Eruna Kiriha dies in the womb, and Kosane is implanted with Incubator cells by her future self to prevent her death.[13]
  • Kosane and Eruna are born.
  • Eruna begins haunting Kosane, and in the future she interprets Eruna as her imaginary friend.

Year 2011

  • Kosane is sent to a therapist, causing Eruna to stop haunting her.
  • Kosane attempts to make a contract with Kyubey, but fails.[14]

March 2021

  • Kosane nears graduation from her senior year of college.
  • Eruna begins haunting Kosane again.
  • Kosane remembers her meeting with Kyubey.
  • Kyubey confronts Kosane.
  • Kosane and Kyubey enter the Time Railroad.[15]

December 2021

  • Kosane commits suicide.
  • Kosane enters a time loop lasting one year, using the time to investigate her suicide.
  • Kosane and Eruna fight with each other endlessly for Kosane's freedom.[16]

Present Day

  • Yurako Mikuni dies in a car accident and Oriko attends her funeral, where people gossip about her not crying. Oriko resolves to remain strong for her father, but this causes him to feel inadequate and focus instead on his political career.
  • Erika Mamiya, Kirika's childhood friend, shoplifts from a mall, flees and leaves Kirika, who was innocent, to be blamed by the cops instead.
  • Mami Tomoe is involved in a car accident and makes a wish with Kyubey to survive.
  • Kyoko Sakura makes a contract with Kyubey in exchange for people frequenting her dad's church and listening to him.
  • Mami and Kyoko meet and form a partnership to fight Witches. Some time later, Kyoko's father would see her fighting a Witch and would later kill his entire family as well as himself, leaving only Kyoko behind. This trauma blocks Kyoko's unique magic and afterwards, Kyoko breaks her partnership with Mami.
  • Hisaomi Mikuni commits suicide after he is set up by Kenzaburo Yaegashi, with everyone believing he was embezzling funds from the government of Mitakihara City.
  • Mami and Kyubey spot Mabayu Aki as a potential Magical Girl. After Mabayu's mother, who had the inexplicable power to see the future, foresaw her own death, she became deathly terrified. With her low potential, Mabayu wished to erase her mother's memory of her prediction and became a Magical Girl.
  • Mabayu and Mami form a partnership, and even convince other candidates to become Magical Girls. To make this happen, Mabayu uses her powers of predicting the future and wiping the memories from the girls. These girls would shortly after disappear, likely due to dying in battle or becoming Witches themselves.
  • The events of Puella Magi Madoka Magica and some of its related media take place. See Timelines for more details.
    • This information may be considered incongruent with many Madoka Magica media, but the original Puella Magi Oriko Magica claims that these, and thus most other events of the Madoka Media, take place during 2011, with Kirika Kure being born in 1997 and dying in 2011.[17]

800,000 years in the future

This is the distant future of a universe not rewritten by Ultimate Madoka. Nothing is known about what sequence of events in the present day would have led to that outcome.

  • Humanity extends their population across the cosmos, reaching at least as far as the Orion Arm.[18]
  • Homo magica evolve from the Homo sapiens race, leading to the extinction of humanity after a war.
  • The Magi Wars begin between the Homo magica and the other races of the universe.
    • Incubators go extinct due to the Homo magica.
    • The Homo magica destroy multiple planets, causing the extinction of many races.
    • The Homo magica create the Time Railroad, intending to use it to conquer time itself.
  • Kosane Kiriha travels from the past and becomes an "emotions manager" for the resistance force.
  • The Homo magica destroy the planet Terminus, causing them to win the Magi Wars.
  • The Time Railroad is destroyed, fusing Kosane with the railroad and with Kyubey.[19]

  • Cleopatra VII Philopator becomes Pharaoh of Egypt and uses girls from the Met Clan to make contracts for her benefit.
    • One of these candidates makes a wish for Cleopatra's beauty, but this magic did need to be reapplied, otherwise its effects would wear off.
    • Ebony makes a contract wishing for Cleopatra to have enough glory to carve her name in history.
    • Contrary to the original universe, it appears that Cleopatra was not a magical girl in this universe.
  • Cleopatra is taken as a prisoner of Rome at the hands of Octavian (the future Emperor Augustus) and dies.[21]

1st Century CE

  • In Pompeii, the young daughter of the Junia family witnesses the destruction of Pompeii together with all its citizens. She makes a contract with Kyubey and goes 3 years back in time to warn its people. Ultimately, she managed to save most of the population.[22]

15th Century CE

  • The events of Puella Magi Tart Magica take place.
