This article focuses on timelines stemming from Homura's time travel from across the franchise. As shown in Scene 0, most of Homura's timelines in the original universe start from the 16th day of the month and last at least 32 days, ending with Walpurgisnacht, or with Kriemhild Gretchen the following morning. For more detail on the original anime, see Madoka Magica Timeline. For more detail on the the Magia Record game, see Magia Record Timeline. For coverage of historical events that predate Homura's contract, see Timeline (Historical).

Original Universe

In general, the order of the timelines is unspecified. However, the Scene 0 timelines, listed first, occur in exactly the order listed. In addition, there most likely are no other timelines interspersed with them.

Timeline 1

These are the events that happen from Homura's release from the hospital, until she creates the first timeline with her wish to save Madoka.[1][2]

Timeline 1
  • Homura Akemi is discharged from the hospital after a long absence from school due to a heart condition.
  • The next night, Madoka Kaname meets Kyubey on her windowsill, who prompts her to make a contract and become a magical girl.
  • On the third day, Madoka finds Amy injured by a car near Récompense. Kyubey appears again and Madoka makes a contract to save her.
  • Mami meets up with Madoka and takes her on her first patrol.
  • The following week, Homura attends school and befriends Madoka. On her walk home, she's lured into a Isabel's barrier, but is rescued by Madoka and Mami, who reveal they're Magical Girls.
    • At the same time, Sayaka becomes lost in a witch’s barrier where she is killed by a familiar.
  • At Mami's apartment, Mami and Madoka explain magical girls to Homura and even mention Walpurgisnacht. Mabayu observes them in camouflage and hopes Homura will join their team.
  • Madoka and Mami save Hitomi Shizuki and other people from H.N. Elly.
  • That week, Kyosuke Kamijo is discharged from the hospital and Hitomi gives him a congratulatory cake. By this point, Homura has decided against becoming a Magical Girl.
  • As Walpurgisnacht approaches, a storm triggers an evacuation in Mitakihara. Mabayu foresees their future against Walpurgisnacht and finds out magical girls become witches and sees their loss in the battle, but then she receives a vision of a future timeline from Ultimate Madoka, to give her hope. Mabayu hides the true, morbid prediction of how the fight would go to inspire hope.
    • During the fight with Walpurgisnacht, Mabayu admits to lying about her prediction, but cuts out the memory of the future she saw so that the end result of the battle would be different. Homura arrives at the battlefield and both Mabayu and Mami die in battle.
    • Madoka goes to fight against Walpurgisnacht alone and also dies. Homura laments her death and is then approached by Kyubey. She becomes a magical girl with the wish to go back in time and save Madoka and creates the second timeline.

Timeline 2

This timeline is the first loop Homura goes through in her attempt to save Madoka.[1][3]

Timeline 2
  • Homura wakes up in the hospital and realizes the previous timeline was real when she sees her own soul gem.
    • Mabayu wakes up, having retained her memories from the previous timeline, and aware that Homura has become a magical girl. Mabayu erases herself from Kyubey's memory and wipes her own memory of being a magical girl.
  • Mabayu, now with no memory of being a magical girl, wakes up from a dream she can't remember. Mami greets her on the way to school, but Mabayu brushes her off.
  • Homura is approached by Kyubey in the hospital and she recounts the events of the first timeline.
    • Mabayu is unknowingly connected to Homura. She notices that time stops around her and later finds that she has a ring (her soul gem) which she doesn't remember buying.
    • Kyubey tells Mami that Mabayu is a magical girl, though he has no recollection of her. Mami surmises that Mabayu wiped her own memory and Kyubey informs her of Homura, another "irregular".
  • Mabayu has a vision of Amy being hit with a car, but is unable to stop it. Madoka and Sakie take her to the vet and Madoka brings Amy back to life with her wish.
  • During a class trip to a factory, Mabayu ends up in a labyrinth but is saved by Mami, and later is saved by Sayaka from a smokestack.
    • Madoka is saved by Kyoko during a battle with a witch.
  • Homura starts attending school and introduces herself to Madoka as a magical girl. She later meets up with both Madoka and Mami, but Mami wonders if she she made Kyubey forget about Mabayu. Homura then informs them about Walpurgisnacht's arrival.
    • At this point in time, Sayaka has disappeared, likely having been killed by a familiar similar to the previous timeline.
  • Mami trains Homura, and Homura, following her advice, makes explosives which she tests in an industrial complex.
  • Hitomi is hospitalized by H.N. Elly, who Kyoko defeats. Later, Madoka, Homura and Mami encounter Kyoko.
  • Mabayu overhears Homura and Mami talking and follows them. She is caught up in a witch's labyrinth, which Kyoko and Mami defeat together.
    • Later, Mabayu follows Mami in a separate occasion, but Mami notices and threatens her. Mabayu runs away and, in a panic, gets dragged into another labyrinth where she's killed by a familiar.
  • After they're unable to contact her, Madoka and Homura go to investigate Mami's apartment and they find her body and Kyoko. Kyoko tells them that she was killed by a familiar.
    • Due to her wording, it is unknown if Kyoko is lying to them, whether Mami was too grief-stricken to fight, or whether her death was a suicide.
  • Madoka and Homura fight Walpurgisnacht, and Kyoko eventually joins the fight too. Walpurgisnacht wins, and Madoka reflects on the death of Mami, Kyoko, and possibly Sayaka. Feeling responsible for their deaths, she becomes a witch and Homura turns back time once more.

Timeline 3

The third timeline that Homura creates.[1][4] In this timeline, Sayaka appears to have become interested in the guitar, but the reasons for this are unknown.[5] It has been speculated that Kyosuke decided to take up guitar in this timeline.

Timeline 3
  • Homura wakes up in the hospital and alters her medical results to be discharged early.
    • Meanwhile, Mabayu wakes up from a nightmare where she died. On the way to school, time stops and she realizes Mami is frozen too, so she isn't the one causing it.
  • Homura's altered results prompt further testing and her discharge is delayed. Kyubey approaches her but she refuses to engage with him.
    • Similar to the previous loop, Kyubey approaches Mami about Mabayu being a magical girl and about Homura. Later, Kyubey approaches Mabayu in her home, where he informs her she is already a magical girl too.
  • Kyubey teaches Mabayu to transform, about magical girls, witches, and directs her to a grief seed already in her drawer. With his help, Mabayu's activates her power of enhancing her sight and hearing to spy on people. While working, she has a vision about Amy being in the car accident but fails to stop it once more. Like in the previous timeline, Madoka and Sakie take Amy to the veterinarian's clinic to save her, where Madoka uses her wish to bring her back to life.
    • Homura has stolen weapons and ammunitions in preparation for Walpurgisnacht. So far, she's been unable to tell the others about Kyubey's lies.
  • Mabayu learns to bend light to make herself invisible as well as to give sound when she reads lips. She spies on Madoka and Mami with this technique when Homura introduces herself to them as a fellow magical girl. She tries to tell them that Kyubey's lying to them but they're skeptical.
  • Mabayu tries to look up Homura's address on the teachers' room but finds Homura not listed there.
    • Homura redeems a winning lottery ticket with knowledge from the previous loop. The clerk tells her that winnings require parental verification at the bank and this prompts Homura to run away and find another way to earn money.
  • During the class trip to the factory, Mabayu enters a Witch's barrier and sees Madoka and Homura fighting it, where Homura tells Madoka about Walpurgisnacht.
  • Mabayu follows Madoka and later, finds that one of the cakes Sakie has made is for Homura Akemi to congratulate her on leaving the hospital.
  • Homura starts attending school and Madoka introduces her to Sayaka and Hitomi while Mabayu spies on them. Later, as Sayaka is about to be attacked by the familiar, Kyubey reveals himself to her while Mabayu watches. Homura stops time to save Sayaka and tells her not to trust Kyubey before leaving.
  • The next day, Sayaka goes to school with Kyubey on her shoulder and confronts Madoka telepathically. Madoka introduces Sayaka to Mami later and Sayaka recounts being saved by Homura.
  • Homura brings Madoka to the factory with the intent to prevent the gas leak tragedy. Sayaka later joins Mami, Madoka and Homura in a witch-hunt.
  • On the way to school with Hitomi, Kyubey reveals to Sayaka that Madoka's wish was to save Amy. That night, Mabayu watches Mami, Madoka and Homura fight a familiar. Unknowingly, Kyoko watches the three of them from another location as well.
  • Sayaka goes to the hospital to visit Kyosuke. As she's leaving, Mabayu sees her and Kyubey goes to her while Mabayu investigates a witch's signature. Inside the barrier, Mami, Madoka and Homura defeat the witch and meanwhile, on the hospital rooftop, Sayaka is approached by Kyubey, who tells him he can stay, but not to talk to her.
  • The next day, Kyosuke is grief-stricken due to his injured hand and, on the rooftop, Sayaka becomes a magical girl to have Kyosuke's hand recover. That night, Homura encounters Hitomi under a witch's kiss. She discovers many people under H.N. Elly's influence preparing for a mass suicide in an abandoned building. Homura goes to fight the witch and has a difficult time until Sayaka, now a magical girl, arrives and easily defeats her.
  • Madoka, Sayaka and Homura visit Hitomi in the hospital, who has only vague memories of the incident. They patrol the streets and sense a familiar but Kyoko interrupts them. Kyoko wants the familiar to become a witch while Sayaka argues against it. Homura stops time and kills the familiar and a fight between Kyoko and Sayaka breaks out. Homura stops time again and accidentally injures both Sayaka and Kyoko with the bomb. Kyoko leaves and Homura promises to explain everything in a meeting with Mami present.
  • Homura, Madoka, Sayaka, and Mami gather at night in an abandoned factory, with Mabayu watching unseen. Homura demonstrates her magic and explains that she is reliving the same month for the third time. She reveals Kyubey's agenda, but Sayaka suggests Homura could be working with Kyoko against them. Madoka defends Homura, but Sayaka remains distrustful and points to the repeated dangers she faces from Homura’s bombs. Mami asks Homura to consider alternative weapons and Mami reveals Kyoko is a former teammate with whom she had a falling out.
  • Sayaka waits in the hospital lobby and discovers that Hitomi is already visiting Kyosuke. She spies on them and sees them sharing a cake and talking to each other. Mabayu notices Sayaka as she's leaving and sneaks inside to overhear Hitomi and Kyosuke, but leaves after realizing the romantic nature of their conversation.
  • Homura and Madoka board a train and Mabayu follows them. Homura then freezes time and steals an arsenal of weapons from a rumored mafia hangout.
    • Mami meets Sayaka by the river, who is berating herself for not congratulating Kyousuke on his hospital discharge. Sayaka asks about Mami's and Madoka's wishes but avoids revealing her own.
  • Sayaka encounters Kyoko, who shares her past and philosophy of using magic for herself. Sayaka disagrees and insists her wish was selfless before running off.
    • While wandering, Mabayu notices a witch's barrier, where Kyoko and Mami defeat the witch and retrieve a grief seed. Kyoko reveals that Sayaka has been hunting familiars and gives Mami the grief seed for Sayaka to use.
    • Sayaka fights a familiar and confronts Kyubey about magical girls’ souls being relocated after their contract. Though betrayed, she admits she might have accepted the terms anyway.
    • Mabayu finds Sayaka fighting a witch alone, before Madoka, Homura and Mami arrive and save her. Homura freezes time and kills the witch with her stolen weapons, but Sayaka insists she didn't need help. Sayaka refuses the grief seed and Homura forcibly freezes time and takes her soul gem. When time resumes, Sayaka’s lifeless body collapses and the others panic, but she gets revived when she is near her soul gem.
  • Mabayu confronts Kyubey, but he justifies it by his own logic. Later, at Café Récompense, Mabayu notices Sayaka sitting outside and offers support to her, but she lashes out and storms off.
    • Kyoko finds Sayaka sitting at the train station and chastises her. Mami, Madoka and Homura then arrive and Sayaka rejects the grief seed Madoka offers her and admits she can’t live up to her ideals. Sayaka then turns into a witch. Mami is horrified as she realizes that magical girls turn into witches, Kyoko demands to know what the witch has done to Sayaka and Madoka pleads with the witch to remember who she used to be. Meanwhile, Mabayu, who had been searching for Sayaka, enters the labyrinth and observes them grappling with the fact that the witch was once Sayaka. Homura apologizes to Sayaka and kills the witch with several bombs. Kyoko struggles to accept what she just witnessed, while Madoka breaks down in tears. Mami lashes out and captures Homura with her ribbons and shoots Kyoko's soul gem with the belief that it is better for them to die now than to become witches. Before she can pull the trigger on Homura, Madoka destroys Mami’s soul gem with an arrow and kills her. Madoka is devastated, Homura promises they will face Walpurgisnacht together and Madoka agrees.
    • At her home, Kyubey explains Walpurgisnacht to Mabayu and that even if all five girls had fought together, the chances of victory would still have been slim.
  • Madoka and Homura defeat a witch together while Mabayu observes them.
  • Madoka and Homura meet at an abandoned factory to discuss their next steps and defeat a familiar. Once again, Mabayu observes them. Throughout the following days, the two of them would fight more and more together.
  • The town evacuates as Walpurgisnacht approaches and Mabayu goes to observe Madoka and Homura. Despite their best attempts, Walpurgisnacht survives and, after the battle, their soul gems are nearly black. Madoka gives her last grief seed from Sayaka's witch to Homura and asks her to save her from Kyubey in another timeline. Homura promises to save Madoka no matter how many loops it takes. Madoka then asks her not to let her turn into a witch and, tearfully, Homura ends Madoka’s life and restarts the month again.

Timeline 4

The first timeline in which Homura adopts her new look in her attempt to save Madoka.[1][6]

Timeline 4
  • Mabayu and Homura wake up and are determined to break out of the time loop. Homura believes no one will accept what she has to say, lets her hair down and fixes her eyesight with magic.
  • Homura is approached by Kyubey and threatens him to not contract anyonewhile Mabayu spies on them.
    • Homura leaves the hospital on her own accord and starts collecting weapons. That night, Homura intercepts Kyubey near Madoka's house and kills him. She hears Mabayu nearby but brushes it off as just her imagination. Homura then talks to Madoka through her window, telling her to not trust anyone that claims they can grant any wish she wants.
  • The next morning, Kyubey approaches Mabayu, who pretends not to know him and that she's losing her mind. Mabayu then goes to the hospital, but finds Homura's room empty, so she waits outside of Homura's house. After Homura returns, Mabayu enters her apartment and warns her that Kyubey is still alive and that Madoka will make a contract to save Amy that day. Homura hastily goes to stop it, but Madoka becomes a magical girl before Homura can stop it. Mabayu reveals to Homura that she's caught in her time loops and then runs away.
  • Mabayu observes Mami and Madoka talking just like last time, but this time Kyubey is also there. In an abandoned building, Homura steals more weapons from a black-market trade.
  • As Mabayu is watching TV, the broadcast is interrupted by a news bulletin about a smuggling group who had been attacked and busted. Mabayu realizes that this was Homura's doing.
  • On the field trip to the factory, Madoka enters a witch's labyrinth looking for Sayaka. Mabayu helps her fight the witch and they’re rescued by Homura, who informs Mabayu she’ll use this loop to learn as much information as possible. Mabayu unintentionally sees the future with her magic by looking into Homura’s eyes, and she sees Homura being killed by the witch, and Mabayu jumping in the way to prevent it and dying herself. Same as her vision, Mabayu jumps in the way and gets killed by the witch painfully to save Homura.
    • After the witch is defeated, Mami approaches and sees Mabayu’s dead body. Mami recognizes her and in her apartment, laments her death to Madoka and Homura and tells them about their history together.
  • Mami, Madoka and Homura fight against a witch, but Mami, saddened by Mabayu’s death, is unable to fight effectively and is killed. Later, in her pendulum room, Homura consoles Madoka.
  • Homura loses against Walpurgisnacht and restarts the loop.

Scene 0 Timeline 5

Homura's fifth overall timeline and the one where Nagisa comes back from being a witch.[7]

Scene 0 Timeline 5
  • Mabayu wakes up with the realization that she can see the future through others' eyes. She visits Homura in the hospital and warns her that her visions represent the best possible outcomes she can reach. Homura also warns Mabayu to stay away from Mami.
  • Homura rewrites her lab results and eliminates Kyubey near Madoka's house. Kyubey introduces himself to Mabayu and pretends to view him as a messenger of God destined for failure. Meanwhile, Mami meets Homura in the park, who proposes she shares information on witches in exchange for Mami not recruiting magical girls. Mami attempts to fight her but fails.
  • Homura shoots Kyubey while Madoka, Sayaka and Hitomi are on their way to school. Mabayu and Homura meet in an alley to prepare for a witch hunt where Mabayu practices her future sight. Later, Mabayu keeps an eye on Madoka and updates Homura.
  • Mabayu keeps pretending to be superstitious when Kyubey tells her he's been regularly shot when approaching Madoka.
  • The class visits the factory, and Madoka and Sayaka accidentally enter the witch’s barrier. Mabayu helps them escape, and together with Homura, they defeat it.
    • Madoka and Sayaka encounter Kyubey, but Homura warns them to stay away. Kyubey recognizes Mabayu and uncovers their deception.
  • Kyubey approaches Mami to mentor Madoka and Sayaka, but Mami refuses due to Homura's previous warning.
  • Homura enrolls to school and later speaks with Mami on the school rooftop to inform her of a witch's location. Homura and Mabayu go fight a different witch and find Madoka and Sayaka inside of the labyrinth. Mabayu predicts the future to fight the witch most effectively, but Sayaka gets hurt during the battle and then taken to the hospital.
  • The next day, Madoka visits Sayaka in the hospital. Sayaka is thankful she didn't make a contract and Madoka feels bad Homura has to fight witches.
  • Homura trains Mabayu and Madoka approaches them. She asks whether her becoming a magical girl would be of any help to them and Homura tells her that she'd only be a burden.
  • Homura meets Mami on the school rooftop and Mami asks whether Sayaka was hurt during the fight against a witch. Homura warns her to not be too curious and leaves, but Mami resolves to follow Homura and find out more about her.
    • Later, Mabayu and Homura talk about methods to discourage Madoka from contracting. They notice Madoka talking to Kyubey and Sayaka sees her too. She realizes Madoka and Kyubey have gone inside a labyrinth and follows after them, but she's attacked by familiars. Mami saves her and goes to fight the witch while Mabayu and Homura find Madoka. Homura makes Kyubey tell Madoka that magical girls become witches and hopes the truth will be enough to keep her away from contracting. Homura and Mabayu go to fight the witch, but midbattle, it behaves strangely and spits out a magical girl they'd never met before. Homura defeats the witch and the girl introduces herself as Nagisa Momoe. As they're talking, Madoka approaches in her magical girl outfit and Homura is devastated. They all go to café Récompense and Madoka reveals that she wished for the witch to be set free of her despair. Kyubey reveals that this Nagisa is the embodiment of the remorse cut out of the witch's body. They decide Nagisa will stay with Mabayu and Sakie in exchange for Madoka and Homura working part-time in the café.
  • Madoka, Homura and Mabayu start working together and Sakie agrees to make the "world's greatest cheesecake" for Nagisa. Together with Kyubey, the three girls discuss what Nagisa's regret could be and prepare to fight H.N. Elly, who is supposed to appear that day. Inside the barrier, Mabayu predicts the future and while fighting, notices that Madoka's potential has increased. Madoka hesitates in the fight and Nagisa shows up and defeats Elly herself. Nagisa asks her not to hesitate when fighting witches, and Mabayu reveals to Homura that Nagisa would convince Madoka better than Homura could.
    • Kyoko goes to Mami's apartment due to the odd situation in Mitakihara, but finds no sign of her.
  • At Récompense, Madoka, Sayaka and Hitomi celebrate Sayaka's discharge from the hospital. Nagisa, Homura and Mabayu have a latte art competition, with Madoka as the judge, and Mabayu wins. Hitomi leaves first and Madoka tells Sayaka that Nagisa is a magical girl too.
    • Madoka, Homura, Mabayu and Nagisa kill an Anja familiar and are approached by Kyoko, who accuses them of killing Mami. Homura calls Kyoko by name and the two parties reluctantly disperse while Nagisa gets sad.
  • At work, Nagisa is still sad and runs away after another latte art competition. In a park at night, Sayaka is approached by Kyoko with a photo of Mami, asking if she knows her. Kyoko reveals that she watched the security footage at the mall and that Mami never exited Charlotte's barrier and Sayaka reveals that Madoka is a magical girl.
    • At home, Mabayu tries to cheer up Nagisa with a cake and cheesy puffs and Nagisa reveals she's been having nightmares. Mabayu contemplates on her abilities and her mother's fortune telling.
  • Madoka, Homura and Mabayu make another cake for Nagisa but she rejects it. Madoka and Homura leave the room while Mabayu encourages Nagisa to apologize. Nagisa overhears Homura calling her a witch and flees, having the girls to search for her across the city. Mabayu eventually finds Nagisa under an overpass, but Kyoko appears and accuses Nagisa of being a witch and killing Mami. Nagisa reluctantly admits to her dream-like memories of eating Mami and Kyoko attacks them. Nagisa, upset and angry, unleashes attacks which shatter Kyoko’s soul gem, killing her. Mabayu thanks Nagisa for protecting her, but Nagisa yells at her to stay away and runs off. When Madoka and Homura catch up, they find Kyoko’s body and hear what happened. Madoka blames herself and Homura instead suggests they focus on saving Nagisa.
  • At the café, Sakie asks Mabayu if she's heard from Nagisa. She worries Nagisa might have been kidnapped or run away, but Mabayu reassures her. Later, Homura stands alone on a bridge and senses a witch's barrier. As she waits, Nagisa appears and then runs off, likely having fought the witch alone.
  • Mabayu has a dream reminiscing of her mother, her ability to see people's future and her complete belief that her predictions would always come true. Later, Mabayu meets Madoka and Homura at an abandoned factory, where Homura expects Nagisa to appear. Mabayu reflects on past loops and avoids telling Madoka about Sayaka’s fate and predicts the future again. Inside the barrier, Nagisa confronts Elsa Maria and then questions why they're being kind to her. Madoka and Homura reassure and tell her they want to be friends and share happiness together. After defeating the witch, Nagisa collapses in pain, warning them not to get too close. She believes she deserves to be punished for the pain she’s caused. Heartbroken, they're unsure of what to do, but Mabayu examines Nagisa's memories, seeing her dark deeds, and erases her memory of the bad things she's done.
  • Nagisa and the others happily eat the best cheesecake that Sakie made with her friends. Homura questions why Mabayu pushed so hard if she was just going to erase Nagisa's memories and Mabayu explains that to erase the bad memories, Nagisa had to relive them first and that she realized she had this ability when she foresaw the future. Mabayu reveals her mother, a fortune teller, predicted her own death and changed drastically after and Homura guesses Mabayu wished to erase the memory of her mother’s prediction. Nagisa reminds them to finish their cheesecake, and plans to help defeat Walpurgisnacht.
  • On the day Walpurgisnacht appears, Mabayu looks into Homura's future again. Despite their efforts, they lose just as Mabayu foresaw. Nagisa is comforted by Mabayu and Homura, who cherish their memories with her. Madoka assures Nagisa that it’s okay even if she couldn’t help everyone. Nagisa, having accepted herself, thanks them and disappears in a flash of pink light, her curse lifted by Madoka’s wish. Madoka thanks Homura for being with her and asks Mabayu to take care of her. Madoka promises Homura she won’t be stained by despair. Mabayu reminds Homura that it’s almost time to go and Homura resets time again.

Scene 0 Timeline 6

The sixth timeline and the one where Mabayu focuses on keeping Sayaka from contracting.[8]

Scene 0 Timeline 6
  • Mabayu wakes up to an alarm and is saddened by knowing that Nagisa no longer exists. She visits Homura at the hospital who reminds her that their mission is to stop Madoka from contracting, and Nagisa's return would mean failure. Homura vows to not repeat the mistake of revealing the truth about witches to Madoka.
  • During the field trip on the sixth day, Homura and Mabayu realize Kyubey has made contact with Madoka while they were fighting a witch. Mabayu foresees the future and then helps Madoka and Sayaka to escape from a labyrinth.
    • Hunting the bovine witch, Kyoko finds Mami at the factory. Mami acts distant and Kyoko asks about why Mami'd been working outside Mitakihara. Homura defeats the witch right in front of Kyoko, takes the grief seed and warns her not to interfere in Mitakihara.
    • Outside the barrier, Madoka and Sayaka thank Mabayu for her help. Mabayu points out a UFO as a distraction, allowing Homura to freeze time and shoot Kyubey with Mabayu's borrowed gun. Time resumes, and the popping sound of the bullets startles Madoka and Sayaka, but Mabayu dismisses it as firecrackers and laughs. The teacher then calls the students back to the bus.
  • Mabayu and Homura meet on the school rooftop to discuss preventing Madoka and Sayaka from encountering witches. As two witches are set to appear, Homura plans to defeat one witch before heading to the mall, while Mabayu stalls Madoka and Sayaka to keep them safe.
    • Later, at a café, Mabayu approaches Madoka and Sayaka by improvising. She eventually ends up asking Sayaka to help with her part time job at Récompense.
  • Sayaka finishes her shift at the Récompense and Sakie praises her for her energy. Sayaka asks why Mabayu offered her the job, and Mabayu explains she thought Sayaka might need the money and had seen her often in the CD section of the video store. Sayaka senses Mabayu is hiding something but reassures her it’s fine and hopes she’ll share someday.
  • Mabayu meets Homura at the bus stop and updates her on their progress. They agree that keeping Madoka and Sayaka ignorant of magical girls is crucial, but Mabayu doubts she can befriend Sayaka. Homura asks Mabayu to check her future again, and the enemy's attack pattern remains unchanged. Homura leaves the task of guarding Madoka to Mabayu.
    • At home, Madoka struggles with her algebra homework while Mabayu, camouflaged, spies on her and Homura telepathically checks in. Mabayu reports no sign of Kyubey so far and reassures Homura that she’s keeping watch.
    • Sayaka walks home, feeling proud of her progress at work and plans to buy CDs and then meets Kyubey, who asks her to contract him.
  • Sayaka brings Kyosuke rare CDs and a cake from her workplace, but he acts distant to her. At the café, Mabayu tries to distract Sayaka by talking about movies. Later, in Homura’s pendulum room, Mabayu vents about her struggle to befriend Sayaka.
  • Mabayu and Homura spot Madoka at the hospital, waiting for Sayaka. Mabayu reads Homura's future, and gives her instructions to quickly defeat Charlotte. They keep in contact via telepathy so Homura knows when to stop time.
    • Sayaka meets Madoka and tells her she wasn't able to enter Kyosuke's room. Mabayu notices Kyubey nearby and warns Homura to stop time while Mabayu shoots Kyubey and uses a fire extinguisher explosion as cover. Homura defeats Charlotte and Mabayu encounters Sayaka, who warns her about the explosion. Mabayu pretends she’s delivering cake to a hospital patient and learns about Kyosuke from Sayaka. Homura telepathically signals the mission is done, and Mabayu excuses herself.
    • At the pendulum room, Homura reports success and shows Mabayu a hand-drawn flowchart of the time loops. Mabayu suggests using a computer, but Homura burns it and explains it resets with the timeline.
  • As Madoka and Sayaka walk home, Mabayu and Homura watch from nearby. Mabayu reads Sayaka's future and sees her contracting with Kyubey. Homura rushes off and finds Sayaka, now a magical girl, fighting familiars and defeating H.N. Elly. Kyubey praises Sayaka, but Homura interrupts, threatening her to stay away from Madoka. Mabayu telepathically stops Homura from killing Sayaka and Homura agrees after Mabayu shows her a vision of success. Later, Mabayu meets Madoka, who is worried. Madoka asks if she’s noticed changes in Sayaka as she's been acting strangely and Mabayu promises to help if Sayaka is in trouble.
  • Sayaka greets Hitomi and Madoka on their way to school, but Madoka notices Kyubey alongside Sayaka. Hitomi doesn’t see him and thinks Madoka is imagining things and Sayaka brushes it off as sleep deprivation, while Mabayu watches them. At lunch, Sayaka shows off her magical girl transformation to Madoka on the rooftop. Homura and Mabayu watch from nearby and Sayaka assures Madoka that being a magical girl is dangerous but necessary to protect people. That night, Sayaka takes Madoka on a witch patrol and they enter a witch's barrier. Mabayu, watching them recalls that Kyoko would have interfered in another timeline but this time she’s elsewhere. Sayaka struggles against the familiars, and Kyubey attempts to convince Madoka to make a contract. Homura intervenes by freezing time, defeating the familiars, and scaring off Kyubey. She warns Madoka to avoid making a contract, saying she would regret it.
  • While working Sayaka shares with Mabayu that her friend Kyosuke is being discharged from the hospital.

  • Sayaka is feeling down at work and tells Mabayu she wishes she could erase her memories. Later, Sayaka meets Madoka and they go on to fight witches. Mabayu and Homura observe the situation and Sayaka faces Elsa Maria. Madoka, concerned, asks Kyubey if contracting could save Sayaka. At this moment, Mabayu kills Kyubey, and Homura defeats the witch while Sayaka watches in confusion. Sayaka lashes out at Homura and attacks her, but ends up exposing Mabayu. Sayaka accuses Mabayu of being involved with Kyubey and Homura and Mabayu realizes that Homura can’t freeze time while Sayaka holds her. Sayaka attacks Mabayu and gives chase. Homura intervenes but Madoka, now a magical girl, appears and Homura surmises she wished to end Sayaka's suffering.
  • Sayaka and Madoka talk by the river at sunset and they spot Hitomi and Kyosuke talking from a distance. Sayaka lookd down and jokes that they might be on a date. • Homura and Mabayu are in the pendulum room and outside, Sayaka and Madoka prepare to face Walpurgisnacht. Sayaka reassures Madoka that they'll be fine if they fight together. Mabayu, camouflaged, watches them head into battle. Sayaka and Madoka's attacks have no effect, and Walpurgisnacht strikes them down. Homura admits to Mabayu that she can't continue, but Mabayu urges her to go ahead and promises they won’t repeat their mistakes. Homura resets time.

Scene 0 Timeline 7

The seventh timeline and the first one where Madoka makes a contract to save Sayaka after she threw away her soul gem.[9]

Scene 0 Timeline 7
  • Mabayu wakes up and goes to Homura’s hospital room and apologizes for the last time loop. Homura reassures her that she gained valuable information for her time loop chart.
  • Similar to the last loop Sayaka has started working at the café.
  • Sayaka finds Kyosuke’s hospital room empty. She meets his nurse, who tells her Kyosuke is in rehabilitation. Mabayu overhears and regrets not recognizing Kyosuke’s name and realizes Sayaka would want to heal him. Kyubey appears and asks what she’s doing, but she lies and says she’s delivering something. Sayaka then realizes Mabayu can talk with Kyubey and he introduces himself to Madoka for a contract. Later, at the café, Sayaka is surprised Mabayu is a magical girl and Mabayu explains she doesn’t remember her wish. Sayaka guesses Mabayu’s wish might have been to ease her mother’s suffering and Mabayu wonders if she erased her own memories.
  • Mabayu stalks Sayaka, who visits the hospital to see Kyosuke. Sayaka and Kyosuke discuss classical music and Kyosuke is frustrated by his condition and inability to play the violin. Sayaka spots Kyubey and Mabayu realizes Sayaka contracts for Kyosuke’s sake. On the rooftop, Sayaka is about to make her contract when Mabayu stops her. Mabayu questions if Sayaka will heal Kyosuke's hand and Sayaka expresses her desire to restore the old Kyosuke who loved music. Mabayu shares her own painful memory of her mother and Kyubey interrupts them, reminding them it's Sayaka's choice. Sayaka makes a contracts and becomes a magical girl.
    • That evening, Sayaka and Mabayu patrol together, Sayaka detects a witch’s magic and Mabayu reveals her ability to see the future. After a quick vision, Sayaka easily defeats the witch, H.N. Elly.
  • At the café, Mabayu asks about Kyosuke’s recovery, and Sayaka says he’s improving, able to play the violin again.
  • Mabayu secretly watches Hitomi and Sayaka at a café, where Hitomi reveals she’s in love with Kyosuke. Hitomi promises to wait only one day before confessing, giving Sayaka a chance to act. Later, Mabayu realizes Sayaka’s sorrow comes from the same secret rivalry as in the previous loop. She worries about how to help but hesitates to reveal she overheard their conversation. Sayaka eventually asks Mabayu to predict her future, and Mabayu agrees but warns that the future is fixed once she sees it. Sayaka chooses to take her fate into her own hands and is determined to confess to Kyosuke without regrets.
    • Later, Mabayu and Sayaka face Elsa Maria in battle. Mabayu is unable to contact Homura and uses a borrowed bomb to save Sayaka.
  • Mabayu watches Madoka and Hitomi as they walk to school while Sayaka is absent. Hitomi tells Madoka she plans to confess her love to Kyosuke after school. Later, Mabayu watches Kyosuke walk home and curses him for being a womanizer. Hitomi approaches Kyosuke and they walk home together. Mabayu is surprised but hears from Homura that Sayaka is acting strangely and Madoka found her. On the footbridge, Madoka asks Sayaka if she’s okay. Sayaka tells Madoka she’s no longer human and that her body is only a vessel for her soul. Madoka tries to comfort her, but Sayaka throws her soul gem onto the street and collapses. Homura stops time and warns Mabayu of the danger that if the soul gem gets too far from her body, Sayaka will be dead until it's returned. Sayaka’s soul gem lands on a truck, and Mabayu locates it with her future vision. They retrieve it, but it disappears from their hands. On the footbridge, Madoka is relieved to see Sayaka awake. Sayaka asks if Madoka made a contract for her, and Madoka explains Kyubey said she could help.
    • In Homura's pendulum room, she apologizes for almost losing her temper, but they can still cooperate to fight Walpurgisnacht, and this time, Sayaka doesn’t hate her.
  • As the magical girls prepare for battle against Walpurgisnacht, Mabayu shares that today’s lucky music is Mozart’s "Dies irae," which Sayaka finds fitting. Homura freezes time, and they all attack Walpurgisnacht together, but it barely damages her. She quickly knocks out Sayaka and Madoka, and Homura tries to reach Madoka, but Mabayu stops and urges them to leave. Homura says goodbye to Madoka, and Mabayu says goodbye to Sayaka before Homura resets time.

Homura comes to the conclusion that Sayaka can't be allowed to make a contract and Madoka becomes a magical girl.
  • Mabayu is saddened by Sayaka's situation and spends until Walpurgisnacht avoiding Sayaka and Homura.
  • Homura goes to Mabayu's room and pulls her from her room and tells her that if she wants to apologize to Sayaka, now is her last chance. Walpurgisnacht defeats Sayaka and Madoka. • As they attack, Madoka meets Kyubey, who reveals the storm is caused by a witch and that her classmates are fighting it. Madoka leaves to help them and watches the battle from a distance. Homura calls out to her, but Madoka decides to change the future. Kyubey and Homura watch as Madoka transforms and defeats Walpurgisnacht in one shot. Kyubey notes that Madoka is now the strongest magical girl but will soon become the world’s strongest witch. He estimates it will take her 10 days to destroy the planet. Kyoko is interrupted from working by Homura's call and, back at Homura’s place, learns that Mami might soon become a witch. Homura orders Mabayu to stay put, but Mabayu sees Kyoko's future and rushes off.
    • Mabayu meets Mami at the train station and she asks Mabayu to leave town with her to escape Homura's control. Mabayu warns Mami about using magic recklessly, as she could turn into a witch. Mabayu prepares to cut Mami's memories and sees herself in them, moments with Mami that she hadn’t known about. She sees herself meeting Mami and learning about magical girls. In the memory, Mabayu learns of her wish, her time with Mami and recruiting other magical girls. Then she sees Mami's perspective from this timeline of Mabayu having forgotten about her and of Homura's actions.
    • Kyoko catches up to them and accuses her of wiping Mami's memories but Mabayu runs off. She walks the streets and feels guilty of encouraging other girls to make contracts and then erasing their memories. In the pendulum room, Homura offers her a grief seed, but Mabayu refuses and sees Homura's future. Mabayu lies and says that they'll stop Mami's rampage and defeat Walpurgisnacht. Kyubey appears, but Homura shoots him and they split up to go search for Mami. Kyubey finds Mabayu by the riverside and she reveals she saw a future where she becomes a witch, destroying the town with Mami. Afterwards, her prediction said she'd turn into a witch after she woke up in the next loop and that there'd be no more loops afterwards. He argues it's her fate, but Madoka interrupts and declares that Mabayu deserves salvation. Madoka wishes to save her from despair and becomes a magical girl.

  • In Homura’s pendulum room, the group prepares for Walpurgisnacht. Homura notes that they were able to steal weapons from military bases and set them around the city, though only 70% of their original goal was met. Mabayu apologizes to Homura, who knew the prediction was a lie. Homura bids Madoka goodbye, turns her shield, and resets time as her hourglass runs out.

After class, she meets Homura in the hospital, where they discuss a new plan to steal a fighter jet. Mabayu suggests Homura doesn’t need her help and thanks Homura. She erases herself from everyone’s memory to secure the future she’s seen. Homura is unable to grasp the full meaning of Mabayu’s actions, but after Mabayu cuts them, she goes back to changing her plans to fight Walpurgisnacht. Mabayu, back in her room, contemplates her inevitable fate as a witch and prepares to fade from everyone’s memory. She bids farewell before cutting her own memories.
  • On the way to school, Mabayu overhears a conversation between Sayaka, Madoka, and Hitomi about love letters. After school, Mabayu sees a strange white creature and follows it, only to realize time has stopped. At her café job later, she wonders if it was a dream but is distracted by her aunt and a customer, Mami, who recognizes her. Mami places an order and Mabayu is thankful but has a happy feeling she can't explain.
  • Throughout the following weeks, Mabayu notices time stopping on a few occasions, that Mami has stopped attending school and she has a continuous looming feeling that she's forgotten something important.
  • On Walpurgisnacht, Mabayu and Sakie go to the evacuation center with everyone else. Mabayu feels the need to remember so when time stops again, she leaves the evacuation center to go to her mom's previous hospital room. Sakie ends up guessing where she'd be and finds her. Sakie tells Mabayu that she was the reason her mom kept living and the two decide to stay at the hospital until the storm ends. Mabayu then sees that the sky has suddenly cleared up and can't help but feel happy.
    • It can be theorized that Madoka defeated Walpurgisnacht in this timeline as well, and that Mabayu became a witch, but how the actual fight against Walpurgisnacht went, and what happens to Mabayu afterwards, is unknown.

Symmetry Diamond Timeline

A timeline that shows Oriko, Kirika and Yuma's experiences without the involvement of Homura. Due to her absence, it is possible this is what happens to the group in the first timeline, or in every timeline prior to the one where Oriko sees Gretchen in her visions.[18]

Symmetry Diamond Timeline
  • Both Oriko and Kirika make contracts with Kyubey separately. Later, the two meet and form a partnership together.
  • After defeating a witch, Kirika sees Erika observing her.
  • Erika arrives in town with her stepdad following her parents’ divorce. Kirika and Erika accidentally run into each other, but Kirika panics, calls Erika a traitor, and runs away. Erika then wanders into a witch's barrier, and Kirika senses the witch's signature. Kirika defeats the witch, saves and forgives Erika for what she did in the past.
  • Kirika reads a letter from Erika, who’s doing well with her parents. Over tea, Oriko teases Kirika about her feelings and forcing her to admit that no one means more to her than Oriko.
  • Yuma's mother yells at a concerned neighbor and threatens Yuma, who is in bed covered in bruises. Kirika rushes back with a grief seed, collapses, and gives it to Oriko. Oriko predicts Walpurgisnacht's arrival in two weeks, and they team up to defeat it. Before Oriko can get more food, a rock with a threatening note smashes through the window. Late at night, Oriko sits in the park, haunted by her father's suicide. She meets Yuma, who was thrown out by her mother. Oriko cheers her up with tea and advice and then has a premonition of Yuma's death, with her mother as the prime suspect.
    • Sasa Yuuki surveys the city and declares she will take over by defeating the rookie magical girls.
  • Kirika fights Sasa outside an apartment complex when Sasa summons a witch to help her. Oriko studies during lunch but is taunted by Komaki and her friends. Oriko leaves, warning Komaki about her risky nighttime activities. Outside, Sasa invites Oriko to eat lunch. Oriko worries about Kirika, who hasn’t sent her usual lunchtime texts, but Sasa reassures her.
    • At home, Yuma’s mother kicks her into a dresser, breaking a vase on her head. Meanwhile, Oriko fails to reach Kirika by phone and sees a vision of Yuma injured. She rushes out and finds her hurt in the park. Yuma refuses medical help and Oriko leaves Yuma with Sasa to instead search for Kirika. Sasa suddenly attacks Oriko but is knocked away by Kirika. Sasa reveals her brainwashing magic and the two fight her and her witches. Sasa panics and tries to use Yuma as a shield, but Oriko tells her about magical girls becoming witches. Sasa destroys her own soul gem, refusing to become a witch, and dies. Kyubey appears and offers Yuma a contract, but Oriko stops him and comforts Yuma.
  • While walking through town, they overhear Yuma happily speaking with her grandparents, now away from her abusive mother and with Oriko's prediction of Yuma's death averted.
  • Oriko bakes a sponge cake for Kirika, Erika goes to visit her grandmother, and Yuma has a picnic with her grandparents when the radio announces a supercell warning and evacuation for Mitakihara. Yuma hopes Oriko wins her battle and Oriko asks Kirika if she is afraid before facing Walpurgisnacht. Kirika says she isn’t, as her wish has already come true. They head off together to fight and are defeated.

Oriko Timeline

One of the many timelines Homura created. Kriemhild Gretchen's potential for destruction has reached a point where it changes Oriko's destiny.[19]

Oriko Timeline
  • At an unknown point in time, after her father committed suicide, Oriko Mikuni makes a contract with Kyubey, to know the reason why she's alive and gets the power to see the future. She tests her power for the first time and sees a vision of Mitakihara being destroyed by Kriemhild Gretchen. She distracts Kyubey by telling him of Yuma Chitose's potential to become a magical girl and oversells her power.
    • Oriko is attacked by a witch and Komaki Asako saves her, revealing she is also a magical girl. Oriko pretends not to be a magical girl and after Komaki and Kyubey leave, she is attacked by Kirika, who reveals she doesn't remember what her wish was. Oriko manages to ambush Kirika and knock her down. Oriko introduces herself and offers to share the truth about magical girls if Kirika becomes her ally.
    • In Kazamino, Yuma and her parents are caught in a witch's barrier and Kyoko manages to rescue her. Yuma becomes attached to Kyoko and, when Kyubey approaches Yuma for a contract, Kyoko stops him and takes Yuma under her wing. The two go to a hotel to spend the night.
  • Oriko orders Kirika to attack magical girls and gather grief seeds for her. Komaki's friend, Akira meets Koito, Komaki's younger sister, who suspects Komaki is sneaking out for late-night parties. Akira is doubtful but decides to investigate.
    • Sasa Yuuki has made a contract to be able to brainwash others and controls the witches of Kazamino to cause many deaths. Lina Hitomi's team has lost their friend, Futaba, while chasing Sasa.
  • Komaki defeats a witch and then encounters Kirika, who challenges her. Akira tracks Komaki using a phone app and finds her fighting Kirika as a magical girl instead of partying. During the fight, Akira panics and accidentally calls Koito while trying to reach the police. As Kirika moves to kill Komaki, Akira rushes in and is fatally struck, dying in Komaki’s arms. Kirika realizes she has accidentally killed a bystander and then accidentally kills Komaki too. As she's dying, Kyubey visits her and Komaki warns him of a magical girl dressed in black.
  • Kyubey tells Oriko about a magical girl and a normal girl who were murdered. Oriko realizes Kirika is responsible. Elsewhere, Sasa Yuuki arrives in Mitakihara, amused by rumors of a magical girl murdering others, and hopes to tame her to clean up the town.
  • Lina Hitomi's team fight Sasa, who pretends to surrender and then escapes.
  • Oriko attends Komaki and Akira's memorial with Miyuki. Afterward, Oriko meets Kirika and tells her to focus on the future. This causes Kirika to remember her wish and Oriko gets a vision.
    • Sasa fights Mio, but she is killed by Kirika and Sasa realizes Kirika is the rumored magical girl murderer and tries to escape. Oriko arrives and tells Sasa to listen. Lina's group finds Mio's corpse and vows to stop Sasa to prevent more sacrifices. Sasa, meanwhile, lies to Oriko and Kirika about her past, claiming Lina's group unfairly attacked her. Lina, Mai, and Miyako note police activity over Komaki and Akira’s murders, and Lina suspects someone in Mitakihara is as dangerous as Sasa.
  • Sasa uses her witches to track Lina’s group with Kirika’s reluctant help. Oriko has a vision of the world’s end and identifies Homura Akemi as Madoka's protector.
    • Lina and her group meet Kyubey, who warns them to be careful in Mitakihara and updates them about Kazamino being protected by another magical girl. Lina decides they need a new plan and they return to their room.
    • Sasa and Kirika track Lina's group and later, Kirika bursts into Lina’s room. From a distance, Sasa watches and Oriko reassures her that the surprise attack will reveal a weakness to exploit. Meanwhile, Madoka becomes lost in the same labyrinth as them.
    • Sasa joins Kirika with a witch under her control. As they fight, Oriko tries to talk to Miyako and reveals her wish to save the world. Lina defeats Sasa and Mai arrives to finish her off, but Oriko stops her. Miyako questions Lina's actions and accuses Lina of causing harm and indirectly causing Futaba's death. This causes Lina to transform into a witch.
    • Miyako is decapitated by Lina, the girls defeat the witch and Kirika kills Mai. Oriko and Kirika leave as Sasa rants. Madoka appears behind her and Sasa sends her witch after her. Madoka then faints, but Homura uses a bomb to kill them and saves Madoka.
  • Oriko and Kirika go to Kazamino and indirectly help Yuma steal a pocky. After Kyoko defeats a witch, Yuma gives it to her as a gift. As they head back, Kyubey follows them.
    • Oriko and Kirika find Sasa’s secret base and find her stash of grief seeds. Oriko is tormented by visions of Yuma being attacked by Cecil and quickly leaves. Kyoko and Yuma have a playful fight and fall asleep, over a pillow, unaware that the witch from Oriko’s vision is near.
    • Kyoko wakes up sensing a witch and goes to fight her. Yuma wakes up to find Oriko instead of Kyoko, who tells her Kyoko might be dead. Yuma panics and asks Oriko if she knows where Kyoko is, but Oriko challenges her. Yuma runs to the park to find Kyoko. Kirika finds Oriko and Yuma declares she’ll fight and change for herself for her. Oriko convinces Yuma to become a magical girl to save Kyoko. Yuma makes a contract and heals Kyoko. Oriko and Kirika leave and when Kyoko finds out Yuma became a magical girl, chastises her.
  • Mami barely defeats Charlotte and senses another magical girl, who turns out to be dead. Kyubey tells Mami that there's a magical girl killer.
  • Kirika kills another magical girl in a witch’s barrier, glad that the girl won’t turn into a witch. Mami reads about unexplained deaths of junior high girls in a diner and is concerned about magical girl disappearances in Kazamino. Kyubey warns her that a magical girl may be targeting others, and Mami agrees to investigate. Yuma approaches Mami offering help for her headache, and Kyoko shows up, surprising them both.
    • Kirika talks to Kyubey and denies knowing anything about the killings. Oriko meets Koito and assures her that she isn’t at fault for Komaki's death. Koito apologizes for her feelings and thanks Oriko for her support.
    • Madoka talks to Sayaka about her strange dreams and unknown encounters with witches. Mami approaches Homura, but Homura responds coldly. Later, Homura fights Chihana Masumi, who mistakes her for the magical girl killer. Homura uses her time manipulation to escape.
    • Kirika finds an old notebook belonging to Oriko's father and after reading it, declares Hisaomi an enemy of Oriko.
    • Chihana tells Kyubey about her encounter with Homura. He plans to recruit more girls, including Chihana, Kirika, and Oriko. Kyoko is uninterested until she learns about Oriko, and decides to help to meet her. Kyubey asks Oriko for help in hunting the magical girl dressed in black. He reveals that he thinks it’s Homura Akemi.
    • Kirika treasures the bunny charm from Oriko, but drops it when a woman bumps into her. Mami notices and helps her find her charm. When Mami mentions a crush, Kirika gets angry, saying that what she feels for Oriko is only love. A witch appears, and Mami tries to avoid harming Kirika. However, Kirika transforms into the magical girl clad in black, who'd been killing other magical girls, and attacks Mami. Kirika uses her magic to make the labyrinth not fade away so she can kill Mami. Mami sets a trap using what she learned of Kirika’s slowdown magic. Mami manages to successfully harm and crack Kirika's soul gem, but Oriko, having seen a vision, intervenes and takes Kirika away.
    • Kyoko and Yuma meet Kyubey, frustrated by the absence of Mami and Oriko. Mami arrives and explains her battle with Kirika and Oriko. At Oriko’s house, Kirika confesses her true feelings and how she wanted to change herself for Oriko, and Kyubey granted her wish, turning her into the person Oriko knows. Oriko demands Kirika make up for her actions, while Kirika agrees. After tending to Kirika’s wounds, she reads the notebook and finds out about Yaegashi manipulating her father into taking the fall for political reasons.
    • Kyoko and Mami discuss their plans and Mami reveals that Homura is not the murderer, but rather Oriko and Kirika. Chihana, late to the meeting, meets Oriko, who kills her with an orb after a brief conversation. Oriko goes to confront Yaegashi and is about to attack him, but he insists that her father's death was caused by her own actions. Later, Oriko returns home and breaks down mentally over the revelations. Kirika insists that she will help Oriko hold on to who she is and promises to help fulfill her wish, as Oriko’s wish has been granted through Kirika’s own.
    • Kyoko, Mami, and Yuma break into the Mikuni Estate to stop Oriko and Kirika. They cautiously explore and realize Oriko might be using some form of prediction-related power. They only find a bloodied nail as Oriko and Kirika aren't there and instead are playing video games at Kirika's house. Later, Oriko's confronted by a delusion of her younger self, but admits to her own selfishness. Kirika agrees, and the illusion fades.
  • Oriko visits her uncle Kimihide, discusses her estate with him and confesses on hating him and his aunt. Afterwards, Oriko meets Kirika. Kyoko insists that Yuma promises her that if she says "run," Yuma will. Kyubey then arrives and informs them that Oriko and Kirika are near the school.
    • Kirika forms a labyrinth around the school and traps everyone inside. Elsewhere, Koito receives a message about the chaos at school and recognizes Oriko in the picture sent to her. Madoka is surrounded by familiars, but is saved by Homura, and Mami is captured by the labyrinth and is saved by Kyoko and Yuma.
    • At the barrier’s center, Homura confronts Oriko and Kirika. Oriko reveals she plans to kill Madoka to prevent her from becoming a witch capable of destroying the world. Kyoko, Mami, and Yuma arrive, but Kyoko focuses on defeating Oriko. Kirika's magic is about to run out and can't slow her transformation into a witch anymore, so she lets go and fully transforms into Latria.
    • Mami, Kyoko and Yuma battle Kirika while Homura battles Oriko. Sayaka and Hitomi fight familiars in a barrier, and they find Madoka. Mami and Kyoko are injured by Kirika and refuse to let Yuma heal them, preferring to die than turn into witches. Yuma, determined to live, heals them regardless, manages to convince them to keep fighting, and together they defeat Kirika. Oriko attacks again, but Homura warns her she'll run out of magic. Kyubey appears, revealing Oriko’s plans and her failure. He has found Madoka.
    • Koito, searching for Oriko, meets Miyuki and Kimihide, who are also trying to find her. Madoka, Sayaka and Hitomi head towards where Madoka thinks Homura is. Oriko is killed by Homura, but as she dies, she hurls a piece of Kirika's witch form at Kyubey, killing him. Homura, after speaking to Mami, Kyoko, and Yuma, finds that the projectile Oriko threw wasn't meant for Kyubey, but rather Madoka. Yuma explains that Madoka is already dead, so she can't heal her.
  • Koito makes a contract with Kyubey so she can find out the truth about everyone's deaths and gains the power to detect lies that people tell.
  • When Walpurgisnacht arrives, Mami, Kyoko, Yuma and Koito prepare to fight against it and ultimately fail.
    • In what might be a sort of afterlife or mind-space, Kirika encounters Oriko, who can't walk due to the burden of her actions. Kirika offers to help her by carrying half of it, and the two walk off hand in hand, smiling.

Portable Madoka Timeline

A possible timeline which Homura ends early due to Madoka contracting to save Sayaka.[20]

Portable Madoka Timeline
  • Homura manages to prevent Madoka and Kyubey from meeting initially.
  • Madoka has a dream about one of the earlier timelines where Homura was battling Walpurgisnacht alone. She remembers the dream vividly and shares it with her family at breakfast, though they dismiss it as her imagination. Throughout the day, Madoka is visibly shaken by the dream but chooses not to reveal its details to Sayaka or Hitomi, fearing they might ridicule her. Homura, who has transferred into their school, cryptically warns Madoka against giving up her normal life during their school tour.
    • After school, Madoka hears Kyubey's cries for help as Homura hunts him down. When Madoka moves to help, Sayaka intervenes and uses a fire extinguisher to force Homura to retreat. They escape but are soon attacked by Gertrud's familiars. Mami rescues them and, after threatening Homura, brings Madoka and Sayaka to her apartment, where Kyubey explains the concept of magical girls.
  • Mami takes Madoka and Sayaka with her to demonstrate the life of a magical girl and defeating Gertrud. Mami offers the grief seed to Homura, who refuses it and leaves.
  • At the hospital, Madoka and Sayaka fail to visit Kyosuke, but they discover a grief seed. Sayaka stays behind to keep watch while Madoka runs to find Mami. Before they return, the grief seed hatches and traps Sayaka and Kyubey in the labyrinth. Mami, Madoka, and Homura follow inside. Mami binds Homura with her ribbons and faces Charlotte with Madoka. Mami dies in battle, but Homura arrives and eliminates the witch.
  • Hitomi is cursed by a witch and, under its control, attempts suicide alongside several others using chlorine gas. Madoka tries to stop her until Sayaka, who had recently contracted to heal Kyosuke's hand, comes and kills the witch. Homura, arrives to witness the aftermath and chastises Sayaka for her recklessness.
  • Sayaka gets into a fight with Kyoko while pursuing Anja, but Homura intervenes and breaks it up. Despite this, Sayaka later agrees to a duel with Kyoko. Madoka and Homura arrive separately to stop the fight, and Madoka throws Sayaka's soul gem off the bridge. Homura retrieves the gem and revives Sayaka after Kyubey reveals the nature of soul gems.
  • Sayaka becomes increasingly distraught over her body and soul's separation and skips school. Kyoko visits and tries to bond with her by taking her to her family's church and sharing her past. Despite understanding her, Sayaka rejects her ideology.
  • Hitomi confesses her feelings for Kyosuke and gives Sayaka an ultimatum to either confess herself or step aside. Later, while Madoka tails her, Sayaka fights Elsa Maria and chooses to suppress her pain, rejecting Kyoko's help and killing the witch herself. Sayaka refuses the grief seed and gives it to Kyoko. After she leaves with Madoka, she lashes out at her and blames her for being a poor friend before running off.
    • Homura confronts Sayaka, offering a grief seed to cleanse her soul gem, but Sayaka refuses. Homura hreatens her, but Kyoko intervenes and Sayaka escapes to board a train. Onboard, she overhears two men speaking crudely about women and transforms in front of them.
    • Madoka, searching for Sayaka, is approached by Kyubey, who tempts her into making a contract to restore Sayaka. Homura arrives too late to stop Madoka from making her wish and becoming a magical girl. Homura, devastated, shoots Kyubey and resets the timeline.

Portable Kyoko Timeline

A timeline where Homura initially convinces Kyoko to team up with her. Due to the nature of the game and potential previous choices, this route has two possible endings. It is possible that both of them are canon, and thus, separate timelines, or only one of them happened, or neither.[21]

Portable Kyoko Timeline
  • Homura fails to stop Kyubey from making contact with Madoka and Sayaka.
  • Mami dies fighting Charlotte.
  • Sayaka makes a contract and becomes a magical girl.
  • Kyubey informs Kyoko about Mami's death and she comes to Mitakihara.
  • Sayaka visits Kyosuke and Kyoko observes her. Sayaka goes on a patrol alone and finds an Anja familiar. Kyoko intervenes and the two disagree on their morals. They start fighting, with Kyubey urging Sayaka to seek out Madoka's help, but she refuses. They are interrupted by Homura, and after Kyoko leaves, Homura is thankful she didn't seek Madoka's help, but warns Sayaka that she will kill her if she brings Madoka along on patrols.
  • Homura meets up with Kyoko at the arcade and the two agree on a temporary alliance. Meanwhile, Sayaka goes to visit Kyosuke, but stops to fight familiars. By the time she's done, the hours for hospital visits are over.
  • One day, Kyoko decides to kill a familiar and Kyubey is surprised, comparing her to Sayaka who acts the opposite to her. Kyubey tells her that Sayaka has no grief seeds left and Kyoko goes to stop Sayaka from hunting familiars.
  • Kyoko makes a grave for Mami and tells Kyubey that it is the only thing which could calm her down. That night, Kyoko asks Homura why she won't cooperate with Sayaka, but she tells her that it's impossible and suggests Kyoko tries it herself.
  • Kyoko starts to notice Sayaka more often and feels bad for her.
  • Kyoko advises her to do more for herself, but Sayaka disagrees and the two decide to fight each other again. Kyubey notifies Madoka, who goes to stop them. As the two are about to fight, Madoka and Homura arrive and Madoka throws away Sayaka's soul gem. Sayaka falls over, dead, but Homura quickly retrieves the soul gem and revives her. Homura then proceeds to explain the nature of soul gems to them.
    • Kyoko yells at Kyubey for his deception and then kills him, but another Kyubey appears and lets her know killing him is pointless.
  • The next morning, Hitomi goes to Sayaka's apartment to reveal her feelings for Kyosuke and gives her a time limit of one day to confess first. After Hitomi leaves, Madoka comes to Sayaka's apartment to comfort her. Sayaka tells Madoka to not contract, but after Madoka leaves, Kyubey appears to talk to her. She almost changes her mind before Kyoko arrives and stops her. Madoka then tells her about Sayaka's feelings for Kyosuke and Hitomi's actions.
    • Kyoko tells Sayaka of her father and why she made her wish. She told of how her father killed himself and her family, of her breaking her partnership with Mami and returning to Kazamino. Kyoko suggests to Sayaka to fight for herself only, but Sayaka points out that Kyoko is not that selfish, but that her wish simply backfired. Sayaka says that she's even willing to fight for Kyoko's sake and then leaves.
  • The next day, Sayaka goes to school and after sees Kyousuke and Hitomi together, Madoka comforts her. After school, Sayaka meets Kyoko at the train station. Kyoko tries to comfort Sayaka, but she tells her it's too late and transforms into a witch.
    • Homura arrives to the scene and helps Kyoko get away with Sayaka's body. They both meet Madoka near the train tracks and Homura explains to them that magical girls become witches.
  • The next day, Kyoko brings Madoka to Oktavia's barrier in an attempt to turn Sayaka back. When they arrive at the center of the barrier, Oktavia vanishes and Homura reveals that she killed her to prevent Kyoko's sacrifice. Kyoko is mad at Homura and there are two branches from this point on.

Branch A

  • If the condition of Kyoko's soul gem is good, Kyoko tells Homura that Sayaka was her last hope. She wants to kill Homura but Madoka tells her that Sayaka wouln't have wanted that. Kyoko tells Homura that she won't help her anymore and leaves with Madoka.
  • In her father's church, Kyoko tells Madoka not to cry every time something bad happens and to not make a contract, as nothing good comes from becoming a magical girl for the sake of others.
  • Walpurgisnacht arrives and Kyoko realizes Homura is fighting by herself. She wonders what Mami and Sayaka would do and goes to fight, not for Homura's sake, but to defeat Walpurgisnacht.
    • Homura and Kyoko are defeated and hurt by the battle, and Madoka arrives and makes a contract to defeat Walpurgisnacht immediately. Madoka then turns into a witch and immediately kills Kyoko before Homura resets time.

Branch B

  • If her soul gem's condition is not good, Kyoko asks Homura why she killed Sayaka, with Homura responding that she only killed a witch and that it's impossible to bring Sayaka back. This pushes Kyoko over the edge, she starts laughing and becomes a witch, which Homura kills shortly after.
  • Madoka goes to Homura's pendulum room to talk to her. Homura tells her that after knowing how harsh the world of magical girls is, she should stay away from it and tells her to leave her apartment. After Madoka leaves, Homura starts to cry.
  • When Walpurgisnacht arrives, Homura fights her alone. Madoka arrives with Kyubey and despite Homura's protests, makes a contract and then becomes a witch. Homura resets the timeline again.

Portable Bonus Timeline

An unusual timeline, where Homura reveals Kyubey's nature to the others to have all five of them fight together.[22] Like all timelines in Madoka Magica Portable, its canonicity is questionable.

Timeline
  • One day after dealing with familiars as magical girls, Mami, Madoka and Sayaka are leaving the barrier and Homura appears in front of them. She requests they listen to her and she reveals the truth behind Kyubey's nature by shooting him.
  • The next day, Homura goes to Mami's apartment. To help with her loneliness, she suggests that Mami should become an idol to never feel lonely. After practicing singing, Mami goes to an audition and meets a talent scout who makes an offer to her.
  • After Hitomi gives Sayaka a time limit of a day to confess to Kyosuke, Homura urges her to confront Hitomi.
  • Before the time limit runs out, Sayaka gives Hitomi a challenge letter and declares that she won't give up Kyosuke. After class, Hitomi and Sayaka have a confrontation. Homura suggests to them that they confess together and let Kyosuke choose which one he likes, but they both refuse. Sayaka tells Hitomi that she has reassessed her feelings and Hitomi slaps her in anger. Sayaka slaps Hitomi back and Hitomi gives up. Sayaka then goes to confess to Kyosuke and Homura comforts the crying Hitomi with a hug. Afterwards, Hitomi becomes quite attached to Homura.
  • Homura suggests to Mami to let Kyoko hunt in Mitakihara and collect grief seeds. Kyoko is frustrated and doesn't believe what Homura is telling her about Kyubey, but after seeing how Kyubey eats his own discarded body, Kyoko accepts Homura's suggestion.
  • Madoka sees how everyone has changed themselves and confesses how useless she feels. Homura comes to her room, slaps her, and requests that Madoka not change.
  • Mami is about to make her debut as an idol with her first CD. Sayaka now is Kyousuke's girlfriend and even told him that she is a magical girl. Kyoko is very satisfied to have taken over Mitakihara and occasionally lets the other girls have some of her grief seeds.
  • Homura calls each of the magical girls, as well as Hitomi, to meet at her home to prepare for Walpurgisnacht.
  • Walpurgisnacht is too powerful for all the girls, and when they ask for Homura's orders, she doesn't respond and instead resets the timeline.

Final Timeline

The timeline in which Madoka saves all magical girls.[23]

Final Timeline
  • Homura manages to prevent Madoka and Kyubey from initially meeting.
  • Madoka has a dream where she saw one of the previous timelines in which Homura was fighitng alone against Walpurgisnacht. Homura enrolls in school and while Madoka shows her around, cryptically warns Madoka against leaving her old life behind. After school, Madoka hears Kyubey's plight as he's hunted by Homura and goes to help him. Homura appears but Sayaka attacks her with a fire extinguisher and they run away. They're attacked separately by Gertrud and her Anthony familiars but Madoka and Sayaka are saved by Mami. • After failing to visit Kyosuke, Madoka and Sayaka discover a grief seed at the hospital. Madoka runs to fetch Mami while Sayaka waits to watch the grief seed. It hatches before Madoka and Mami get there and Sayaka and Kyubey get taken inside the labyrinth. Mami and Madoka enter and are followed by Homura. Mami restrains Homura and proceeds to the witch with Madoka. When they reach Charlotte, Mami dies in battle against her and Homura arrives and kills the witch herself.
  • Kyosuke is grief-stricken due to his injured hand and Sayaka makes a wish with Kyubey to heal his arm. Hitomi is kissed by a witch and Madoka saves her and several others from killing themselves with chlorine gas. Sayaka arrives abd saves them, but then is chastised by Homura, who arrived late.
  • Sayaka gets in a fight with Kyoko over an Anja familiar while patrolling for witches, but Homura arrives and breaks it up. Later, Homura finds Kyoko and makes a deal with her to leave Sayaka alone and to prepare for Walpurgisnacht. That night however, Sayaka is challenged by Kyoko to a duel and Kyubey informs Madoka of it. Madoka and Homura arrive separately to the battle and Madoka throws Sayaka's soul gem off the bridge. The girls realize that soul gems have the girls' souls in them but Homura retrieves the soul gem and revives Sayaka.
    • Sayaka confronts Kyubey and he informs her that she can suppress all the pain in her body.
  • Sayaka doesn't attend school due to her feelings with her new body. Kyoko takes Sayaka to her family's church in an attempt to get her to understand her point of view. Kyoko explains how it came to ruin, but Sayaka rejects her ideals again.
    • Hitomi informs Sayaka that she too likes Kyosuke and prompts her to confess to him in the next 24 hours, or else Hitomi will. With Madoka following her, Sayaka fights Elsa Maria. Kyoko tries to help, but Sayaka rejects her and turns off her pain to kill the witch herself. Sayaka refuses to use the grief seed for herself and yells at Madoka, accusing her of being a terrible friend before running away. As Homura and Kyoko make plans for Walpurgisnacht, Kyubey appears and informs them that Sayaka is in a bad condition.
    • Hitomi presumedly confesses to Kyosuke while Sayaka spies on them. She fights more familiars and Homura finds her and offers her a grief seed. Sayaka refuses Homura's help and Homura threatens Sayaka to not make Madoka suffer. They're interrupted by Kyoko who restrains Homura long enough for Sayaka to run away. Homura escapes from Kyoko's grasp but Sayaka has already entered the train where she overhears two sexist men talking. She confronts them and transforms, potentially killing them.
    • Meanwhile, Madoka searches for Sayaka and Kyubey approaches her. As Madoka is about to make a contract for Sayaka to turn back to normal, Homura kills Kyubey and pleads with Madoka. Madoka runs away and another Kyubey shows up to talk to Homura. Kyubey figures out that Homura is from a different timeline and she tells him that she knows what his plans are. Kyoko finally finds Sayaka on the train station and Sayaka laments her decisions and turns into a witch.
    • Kyoko retrieves Sayaka's body and Homura appears to help her out. They meet Madoka on the railway and reveal that Sayaka turned into a witch. Homura leaves Kyoko to take care of Sayaka's body and leaves.
    • Kyoko takes Sayaka's body to a hotel and uses her own magic to keep it fresh. She questions Kyubey on whether it'd be possible to save Sayaka and he dodges the question, saying that such an achievement wouldn't surprise him.
  • While Madoka and Hitomi go to school, Kyoko calls to Madoka telepathically to go and save Sayaka. Kyoko explains she plans to have Madoka call out to Oktavia to bring out Sayaka. As the two of them chase down Oktavia's labyrinth, Homura notices Madoka's absent from school and leaves to find her. Kyoko informs Madoka of Walpurgisnacht's arrival and they enter the labyrinth but fail to have Sayaka come back. Homura arrives to save and take Madoka outside of the labyrinth and Kyoko makes her own soul gem explode, killing both Oktavia and herself.
  • Some days later, Sayaka's body is found and a funeral procession is held for her. Madoka goes to Homura's apartment and asks her about Walpurgisnacht. Homura breaks down and tells Madoka that she's from another timeline and that she's repeated the month many times trying to save Madoka. The evacuation of Mitakihara happens and Homura fights Walpurgisnacht alone, but fails. Madoka is worried about Homura and goes to find her. Madoka comforts Homura and wishes to save all witches in the past and future everywere. Madoka becomes a Magical Girl and rewrites the universe, creating the Law of Cycles Universe and saving all magical girls.

Law of Cycles Universe

The Law of Cycles universe is that which results from Madoka's wish at the end of the final timeline. As such, in one way it can be seen as an extension of that timeline. However, since Madoka's wish rewrites the entire world, including all of history, it can alo be treated as an entirely separate universe.

Currently, the only known events in this universe are the those of Wraith Arc and Rebellion. Whether these are both part of the same timeline is under dispute. There is also the epilogue of Episode 12, which also reappears as the epilogue of Wraith Arc.

Wraith Arc Timeline

The timeline Homura ends up in after Madoka rewrites the universe.[24]

Wraith Arc Timeline
  • In the new universe Madoka created, wraiths prey on emotions and Mami, Kyoko, and Sayaka work together to fight them in Mitakihara. Sayaka locates a wraith colony and engages it alone, notifying Mami but not Kyoko of its location. Afterward, Sayaka and Kyoko argue about their mistakes, eventually brawling away from Mami until they exhaust themselves. They reconcile awkwardly and share pocky.
  • The next day, Hitomi presumably confesses her feelings for Kyosuke to Sayaka and gives her an ultimatum to confess. Later, Sayaka is distracted by these feelings and struggles in battle. She walks home, preoccupied with thoughts of Kyosuke and Hitomi. Kyoko confronts her, suggesting a dark solution to eliminate Hitomi's feelings for Kyosuke with a wraith. Sayaka rejects the idea and accuses Kyoko of selfishness. Their argument escalates into a rooftop battle, with Kyoko eventually gaining the upper hand. However, Sayaka uses her cape to set up a trap and declares victory. Despite their differences, Sayaka agrees to continue working with Kyoko for Mami's sake but warns her to stay out of her personal life.
  • Sayaka recalls Hitomi's confession about liking Kyosuke and giving Sayaka one day to confess her own feelings. That night, Sayaka debates telling Kyosuke but is interrupted by Kyubey, who warns her of a strong wraith nearby. Following Kyubey, Sayaka finds the wraith targeting a busy shopping street, where Hitomi is among the crowd. Sayaka fights and defeats the wraith, saving Hitomi unnoticed. From a rooftop, she sees Kyosuke approach Hitomi, and they walk away together.
    • Later, at the station, Kyoko and Mami discuss Sayaka and Mami urges Kyoko to apologize for her past behavior and bring Sayaka back. Meanwhile, Sayaka fights a growing horde of wraiths alone, but eventually succumbs and allows them to absorb her emotions. Kyoko intervenes and saves Sayaka from the wraiths, but Kyubey stops them by warning that Mami is in danger. Mami battles a giant wraith whose power overwhelms her and Sayaka and Kyoko arrive to help. Mami devises a plan to defeat the wraith and trusts Sayaka with the riskiest part. As the plan unfolds, the wraith traps Sayaka and starts consuming her memories and emotions. Kyoko pleads for Sayaka to fight back and Sayaka regains her resolve, transforms, and defeats the wraith.
    • In a vision from Madoka, Kyosuke plays in an empty auditorium as Sayaka watches. Madoka takes her hand and takes her to the Law of Cycles.
    • At the station, Mami and Kyoko realize Sayaka has been taken by the Law of Cycles. Homura, now present, holds Madoka’s ribbons and softly says her name, leaving the others confused.
  • Saotome introduces Homura as the new transfer student. She later fakes feeling unwell and leaves the classroom. On the rooftop, Homura meets Mami and Kyoko where Mami explains they’re meeting to discuss a giant wraith.
    • Homura sits atop a building, contemplating her soul gem and its time shield, now useless in the new world. Unable to find a reason to keep it, she discards the shield, which creates a portal upon hitting the ground. Entering the black hole, Homura finds herself in a surreal world that feels eerily familiar. Hearing Madoka’s voice, she runs toward it, but the ground gives way to strands of hair, and she faces Kriemhild Gretchen. She runs away and realizes her shield contains a witch, despite witches no longer existing in this world.
    • Homura considers destroying the shield but hesitates, fearing that Madoka, who fights witches eternally, might be inside. Instead, she erases her memory of the shield with magic and vows to protect Madoka’s world.
    • At night, she tells Kyubey of the Law of Cycles and Madoka, but Kyubey doubts Homura. Homura descends a building with Kyubey on her shoulder and defeats them. She fights wraiths with Mami and Kyoko and later, Homura faces the giant wraith alone, but the wraiths trap her. Mami and Kyoko fight their way to Homura, who awakens to find herself de-transformed and surrounded. A wraith takes Madoka’s ribbon and Mami and Kyoko find Homura unconscious on the street.
  • Homura dreams of a barren desert, hearing Madoka’s voice calling her name and wakes in Mami’s bed. When Mami asks her to transform and summon her weapon, Homura struggles to do so. Mami deduces the wraiths stole some of her magic and points out her soul gem’s unusual state. Homura recalls the wraiths also took Madoka’s ribbon and asks if defeating the wraith could restore her magic. Mami doubts it but insists they work together. Homura confuses Mami by altering her memories, thanks her, and leaves.
    • Homura encounters Kyoko, who offers to exchange information on the giant wraith, agreeing only if she gets to finish it off. Mami returns to her apartment and senses a wraith’s presence. She cautiously enters her home, confronting mutant wraiths who've taken the form of her parents. Meanwhile, a wraith whose taken the form of Madoka wanders the streets with a ribbon around her neck.
    • Homura confides in Kyubey that her powers haven’t recovered, even with grief cubes. Kyubey theorizes the wraiths targeted her magic specifically and notes their disappearance after her defeat. Mami passes them without a word. Later, Mami cryptically asks Kyoko how she’d react if the dead reappeared, then decides they should patrol separately.
    • Kyoko meets Hitomi, who overheard her conversation with Mami. Hitomi seeks answers about Sayaka’s disappearance and blames herself. They both feel guilty, but are distracted as Sayaka appears on a light post and calls to them. She jumps down, laughing as she explains how she ended up in another dimension, unaware a month had passed. Kyoko is stunned, but Hitomi tearfully apologizes for breaking her promise about Kyosuke. Sayaka questions if Hitomi’s guilt stems from thinking she ruined Sayaka’s chance to confess and demands Hitomi “hand over” Kyosuke as proof of her sincerity. When Kyoko protests, Sayaka accuses her of betrayal too, blaming her for not sharing grief cubes. Kyoko recognizes that it is not Sayaka and Sayaka’s wraith powers flare as she attacks Kyoko.
    • Elsewhere, Mami walks through a park, speaking to the indistinct forms of her parents. She reminisces about her struggles growing up alone but feels grateful for being able to see them again. She transforms and destroys the wraiths masquerading as her parents.
    • At the station, Wraith Sayaka reveals its true form and flees. Kyoko follows her after telling Hitomi to forget everything and that Sayaka is dead. Chasing the mutant wraith, Kyoko is swarmed by smaller wraiths. Meanwhile, Homura encounter Kyoko, but Mami intervenes, revealing this Kyoko is a wraith too. When Wraith Kyoko shows time manipulation powers, Homura hears a mysterious voice offering help. Following its guidance, she and Mami trap the wraith and destroy it with a Tiro Finale.
    • As the smoke clears, the real Kyoko arrives, confused. Mami confirms her identity, and Kyoko explains the wraith she saw had turned into Sayaka. Mami suggests they rest and meet tomorrow, warning them to stay vigilant at night. Later, Homura hears the voice again. She turns to see Madoka, dressed in white and smiling, telling her she missed her. 'Madoka' reveals she's a wraith. She says Homura's power disrupted the wraiths, creating mutations, and asks Homura to defeat the giant wraith responsible. Homura is skeptical, but allows Wraith-Madoka to stay at her apartment temporarily.
    • At Homura's apartment, Kyubey confirms Wraith Madoka carries Homura's magic and detects curses mixed within her, likely causing the mutations. Homura asks Kyubey to keep the wraith's presence a secret. Meanwhile, Homura, Mami, and Kyoko strategize to avoid wraith tricks while searching for the giant wraith.
  • One night, Wraith Madoka confronts Homura and tells her that Homura's heart is broken, leaving her unable to trust or feel. Homura vehemently denies this, declaring her unwavering love for Madoka and determination to fight for her memory. Wraith Madoka claims to embody Homura’s heart, but Homura rejects her and calls her an enemy.
    • When they meet, Mami expresses concern for Homura, urging her not to shoulder everything alone. Homura lashes out, accusing Mami of seeing her as a nuisance. Mami apologizes and reminds her they are friends. Homura apologizes and leaves. She later questions Kyubey about her wish as a magical girl, which he doesn't know about. Homura realizes her memories of Madoka might be fabricated by her own memory magic and doubts everything she's fought for. She runs through the rain and Wraith Madoka appears in front of her. Homura ignores her and runs into Mami and Kyoko, who confront her, sensing something is wrong. Wraith Madoka clings to Homura, and Homura reveals that Madoka sacrificed herself to become a goddess who saves magical girls. Kyoko takes offense, accusing Homura of dishonoring Sayaka’s memory. Homura admits she rewrote her own memories and no longer knows what is real. She breaks down, unable to believe in anything, and begs Madoka for salvation. Mami tries to save Homura by attacking the wraith, but Wraith Madoka defends herself and transforms. She kisses Homura’s soul gem and unleashes her power, floating in the air with Homura and teleporting away.
  • Homura sits in her apartment with Wraith Madoka as Kyubey emerges. He notes that Homura’s emotional energy is gone, leaving her soul gem stagnant beyond the reach of the law of cycles. Wraith Madoka senses a giant wraith as hundreds of smaller ones head toward the clock tower.
    • At a park, Mami and Kyoko discuss Homura's absence and her bond with the wraith. Suddenly, miasma fills the park and wraiths surround them. The girls transform but hold off attacking, realizing the wraiths are ignoring them and decide to follow. In the city, they find dead bodies, confusing Kyoko since wraiths don’t kill. Wraith Sayaka appears, and Kyoko fights her, telling Mami to follow the smaller wraiths. Kyoko frees herself, destroying the wraiths with a powerful spear attack, though her soul gem darkens.
    • Meanwhile, Mami fights Wraith Mami and Wraith Kyoko. As she prepares a fights, Wraith Madoka takes Homura’s ribbon and shoots magical arrows on the wraiths. emitting a radiant aura. She shoots an arrow into the sky, raining magical arrows on the wraiths. When the dust settles, Mami sees Wraith Madoka standing before her. The mutant wraiths attack, but Wraith Madoka protects Mami. She hesitantly accepts Wraith-Madoka’s outstretched hand, and time stops around them. Together, they defeat the mutants using Mami's Tiro Finale.
    • At the clock tower, tendrils transform into a massive wraith-like creature. Wraith Madoka reveals to Mami and Kyoko that the creature has transcended wraithhood and now threatens all life. While she urges them to flee, Mami decides to fight. Kyoko, tasked with evacuating civilians, gives Mami grief cubes to cleanse her soul gem. Moments later, Kyoko is caught by the creature’s tendrils. Wraith-Madoka rescues her, but Kyoko's soul gem is already drained. Kyubey confirms anyone touched by the creature dies immediately and urges Mami to escape.
    • Wraith Madoka battles the creature’s familiars, but they overwhelm her. As she falls, Homura, who has been watching, suddenly remembers everything. She realizes the transformed wraith is a witch and proof of Madoka’s existence. Determined, she rushes to save Wraith Madoka and catches her mid-fall, embracing her. Homura now understands the power behind it all stems from her shield.
    • Homura recalls the witch in her shield while pinned under debris. She sees Wraith Madoka injured nearby, holding her ribbon. Homura reaches out, and Madoka takes her hand, reassuring her. Inside herself, Homura meets a version of herself in a white dress. This Homura is her magical power personified, who explains that Homura’s new memory powers were born from her and Madoka’s deep connection. This power separate from current universal laws interfered with the shield’s time magic, linking it to Madoka. The shield’s curses caused the wraiths to mutate and threaten the world, transforming into a true witch with the potential to destroy everything. Determined to stop the wraiths, Homura asks her magic for aid. Sayaka, Mami, and Kyoko, in wraith forms, challenge Homura’s resolve, warning her of the pain of losing the shield and doubting Madoka again. She refuses to abandon the world Madoka saved and resolves to fight for it instead. She declares her feelings for Madoka and asks her magic to transform—not as a shield to protect Madoka, but as a weapon to destroy her enemies. The white-dressed Homura then becomes her soul gem.
    • Homura transforms into a magical girl, wielding her black bow and magic wings of corrosion. She destroys the wraiths' familiars with a powerful arc of magic and fires an arrow at the giant wraith, cracking it open. As she pushes the arrow deeper and finds her old time shield. Just before she reaches the shield, familiars restrain her. Ultimate Madoka appears and pushes her hand to help her reach it. Homura shatters the shield, unleashing a blinding light that destroys the giant wraith.
    • Homura awakens in an unknown realm, where White-dressed Homura explains time is rewinding due to Madoka’s intervention. She warns Homura that their memories will be erased but promises to support her if her resolve wavers. White-dressed Homura is shown inside Homura’s soul gem.

Rebellion Timeline

The timeline created after Madoka and Homura turn back time, where Homura is imprisoned by Incubators to lure the Law of Cycles.[25]

Rebellion Timeline
  • Homura wakes at the station, holding Madoka’s ribbon just like in the last loop. When she mentions her, Mami and Kyoko don’t remember Madoka. Later, on a construction rafter, Kyubey doubts Homura’s memories, calling them a dream. Homura descends from the building without him and battles wraiths in the city. Kyubey, watching from above, reveals he retained a fragment of Homura’s time shield and remembers the Law of Cycles from the last timeline. He plans to use Homura’s eventual despair to take possession of the Law of Cycles.
  • Homura walks into a desert of wraiths, her black wings spread, while Incubators observe from nearby ruins.
    • Homura is trapped in the Incubators' Isolation Field and cut off from the Law of Cycles. The seal causes her to fall into a deep slumber and develop an internal labyrinth inside her soul gem. After the labyrinth takes the shape of Mitakihara City, Homura sends the Clara Dolls to retrieve Mami, Kyoko, Hitomi, Kyosuke, Kazuko Saotome, Nakazawa and Madoka's family into it and everyone's memories are rewritten to a perfect reality.
    • Seeing this Madoka decides to send herself, as well as two emissaries with her to Homura's soul gem. She entrusts her memories to Sayaka and Nagisa, in case one of them doesn't make it, and becomes a normal magical girl inside the false Mitakihara City.
    • In the false city, magical girls don't make contracts, or fight wraiths, but rather Nightmares, beings created by the negative emotions of normal humans. Nagisa takes on a witch-like form, and alias of Bebe, and Mami's memories are rewritten to have met Bebe years ago and for the two to have been companions ever since. Kyoko's memories are rewritten to have been called over to Mitakihara by Mami and to have been attending school and living with Sayaka ever since. During all this time, Kyubey observes them by pretending not to be able talk.
  • Mami supposedly meets Homura, who is set to transfer to their school the following day. That night, Madoka, Sayaka, Mami and Kyoko fight The Little Bear's Dream, capture and give it food to defeat it.
  • Homura transfers to their class and, during lunch, the girls introduce each other and welcome Homura into the group, as Homura has now regained her shield and her time-stopping powers.
  • The following month, the six girls fight nightmares together almost every night.
  • Madoka and Homura talk and reflect on their time together. Meanwhile, Hitomi has a phone conversation with Kyosuke. He tells her that he is too busy to meet and, upset about their relationship, she has a nightmare that emerges.
    • Mami's detects the nightmare, The Little Goat's Dream, and Sayaka and Kyoko find it, confirming it's Hitomi's. The girls meet together and transform as the "Holy Quintet". They undo the damage created by the nightmare and restrain it. They feed it while singing the Cake Song and Bebe transforms it into a cake. After Bebe eats it, a blob of Hitomi’s head appears and, after Sayaka comforts it, purifies the girls' soul gems. Hitomi has a pleasant dream and the city returns to normal at dawn as Homura feels something is off.
  • That day, Homura notices most people’s faces are distorted. She meets with Kyoko, sharing her suspicions and learning that Kyoko doesn't remember when she transferred. They travel to Kazamino City, but every attempt to reach it brings them back to Mitakihara. Kyoko realizes something is trapping them, but Homura warns her that there might be nothing outside of Mitakihara. As the two talk about notifying the others, they are surrounded by distorted humans with the two's faces. Homura reassures Kyoko that they'll be fine as long as they don’t try to escape. Kyoko admits her memories feel off and agrees to keep the secret before leaving. Homura takes off her glasses and undoes her braids as her suspicions of the entire city being in a witch's barrier are confirmed.
    • Homura starts to regain her memories, remembering her time loops and the Law of Cycles. She suspects a witch altered everyone's memories and trapped them in a fake Mitakihara City. She goes to have tea with Madoka, Mami and Bebe and, while talking, Mami reveals that Bebe once supported her through despair. Before finishing her tea, Homura asks Mami for more, which makes her suspicious, so as she goes to retrieve more, she ties one of her ribbons to Homura without her noticing. Homura transforms, stops time and takes Bebe with her away from Mami's apartment. She accuses Bebe of being the witch that created the barrier, but Mami intervenes by sending a clone of herself made of ribbons, which Homura believes is the real Mami. Homura tries to convince Mami that the town is fake, but after she doesn't believe her, Homura tries to shoot Bebe. Mami helps her escape and, after finding out her ribbon makes Homura's time stop ineffective towards her, Homura and Mami fight against each other, both on equal footing until Homura shoots through her own head and uses the bullet to break the ribbon. Homura contemplates killing Mami but only shoots her in the leg, at which point, the clone breaks apart into ribbons which tie Homura up.
    • As the two talk, Mami remembers wraiths, which surprises her. They are interrupted by Sayaka using a fire extinguisher to save Homura, while Nagisa stays behind, in her real form, to talk to Mami and tell her the truth. After Sayaka takes Homura away from Mami, she frees her and the two talk. Sayaka reveals she remembers Madoka and the original universe, but doesn't let Homura stop time when she tries. Sayaka argues that living in the fake world isn't too bad and Homura realizes that Sayaka shouldn't remember witches. Homura asks if she's the real Sayaka, and Sayaka projects an image of Oktavia on the water below them. Homura kicks Sayaka away to freeze time, but she teleports away through her cape, and then projects her voice warning Homura to think thoroughly before destroying this version of Mitakihara City.
    • Homura meets Madoka and the two talk in a field of flowers. Homura breaks down and reveals her feelings of fear of having made up Madoka, framing the entire experience as a dream she had. Madoka reassures her that she'd never leave Homura, her friends, or her family, and Homura comes to the conclusion that she should have never accepted Madoka's sacrifice. Homura leaves Madoka behind as she realizes she's the only one who could have made a world with Madoka would be someone who remembered her.
    • Homura approaches the bus station to leave Mitakihara and calls Kyoko. She asks Kyoko if she remembers witches and Madoka, revealing that Kyoko's memories of her are false. She places her soul gem on a table, boards the bus, apologizes to Kyoko and hangs up. She tests out her theory by seeing whether her body could go beyond the distance of a hundred meters from her soul gem. Homura realizes she was the witch and despairs as the city begins to collapse and catch on fire. After the bus loops back and crashes, Homura doesn't die, but instead shoots her soul gem with the Clara Dolls watching her.
    • A cocoon-shaped building rises, with Homura changing her attire, and Kyubey explains that Homura has been part of their experiment. Her soul gem, isolated and corrupted, formed a barrier inside itself to lure Madoka so that the Incubators could confirm her existence. He propts her to call to Madoka for help, which would make her remember who she is but Homura refuses and starts creating a curse, intending to become a witch and have Mami and Kyoko kill her, ensuring Madoka's safety. Homura becomes a witch, Homulilly, and thanks Madoka before starting her own funeral procession, wanting to die.
    • From afar, the other magical girls and Bebe watch and Kyubey appears and asks if they're really going to fight Homura. Sayaka tells Madoka not to listen to him, Bebe transforms into Nagisa and the group starts attacking Homulilly's familiars. Sayaka summons Oktavia from her own blood as well as an army of familiars to fight with them. The two reveal that they're emissaries of Madoka, playing along this whole time and entrusted with her memories on a mission to save Homura. Kyoko saves Sayaka from a familiar and asks her if the dream she saw where Sayaka died was actually reality. Sayaka tells her that the reason she decided to come back was because she missed Kyoko.
    • Madoka eventually shatters the barrier's ceiling, revealing Kyubey's isolation field. Sayaka explains that if the isolation field is destroyed, Madoka can finally save Homura without interference. When Madoka reaches Homura, she comforts her by saying she'd never abandon her. The two use their bows to attack in unison and Homura reassures Madoka that she won't hesitate anymore. Their attack breaks the isolation field and destroys the incubators observing Homura's body.
    • Now outside Homura's soul gem, Mami and Kyoko await the Law of Cycles to take Homura with her. With Sayaka and Nagisa behind her, Madoka apologizes to Homura for making her wait and says that they'll be together forever. Homura says that she'd been waiting for this moment and grabs Madoka before she can reach her soul gem. As a whirl of colors spills from Homura's soul gem, the others protest, but Homura says that she'd been saving this emotion for Madoka alone. Reality begins to crack and, as she begs Homura to stop, Madoka is separated from the Law of Cycles and the cracks and colors from Homura's soul gem grow and encompass the entire universe.
  • As the universe is being rewritten, Homura breaks her own soul gem, which reforms into something else. Kyubey asks Homura what she's doing and she reveals that her soul gem wasn't filled with curses, but rather her love for Madoka. As she gains a new form, she reveals that she could no longer be called a magical girl or a witch, but rather the devil. Kyubey comes to the realization that they should have never attempted to control or harvest emotions, as they're too unpredictable. He attempts to run away, but Homura grabs him and explains that she still needs him to deal with the world's curses. She says that she'll force him to cooperate and then teases him.

Post-Rebellion Universe

The Post-Rebellion universe is the result of the second rewrite undertaken by Homura at the end of Rebellion. As such, the only known events in this universe are the Rebellion epilogue. It is speculated that Walpurgisnacht: Rising will also be set in this universe.

Post-Rebellion Timeline

The universe ruled by Devil Homura.

Post-Rebellion Timeline
  • Three years before the point in the present, Junko moved to the US with her entire family.
  • Homura observes her friends in the rewritten reality, in which her familiars are a natural part of. She wipes the memory of Mami and Kyoko, who now attends Mitakihara, but she's then confronted by Sayaka, who remembers the truth. Homura reveals that she only stole a part of the Law of Cycles and declares herself as evil for having pulled god from heaven. Sayaka summons Oktavia to fight, but Homura erases her memory, while Nagisa runs around laughing gleefully. Sayaka feels that she shouldn't be here and she tells Homura that she'll never forget that she's the devil, but Homura only tells her that they should pretend to be in good terms. Homura disappears and Sayaka is greeted by Kyosuke, who's now healed, and Hitomi on the way to school.
    • Madoka returns to Mitakihara as a transfer student, and Homura offers to show her around school. As they walk, her memories of her divine form begin to resurface. Homura intervenes and pushes those memories down while hugging Madoka. She asks Madoka if she loves the world and gives her back her red ribbon which she wore. Homura reaffirms that she will create a world where Madoka can be happy, even if it means opposing her someday. At the end of the day, Sayaka and Kyoko eat pocky after school together, Mami and Nagisa shop for snacks and Madoka and her family start unpacking.
    • That night, Homura sits alone on a cliff and dances with the dark orb as Kyubey reappears, disheveled.

Magia Record Universe

This refers to the universe of Magia Record. At first glance it may seem identical to the original universe, but there are enough differences to consider it as a separate universe, mainly with respect to historical events. Though it is a universe where witches still exist, it also lies within reach of the Law of Cycles, marking it as an anomaly.

There are only two major timelines in this universe – the timeline of the game and the timeline of the anime.

Magia Record Game Timeline

Due to the amount of content in Magia Record, the timeline is structured by a list of events and stories in chronological order, as well as a quick summary for each entry. Trivia

  • Itzli can possibly retain memories between Homura's time loops as she was able to grow in strength from them. Kyubey notes that she was never found before Homura entered her barrier.
  • Winchester's mirrors connect to countless other universes with various differences, as well as different points in time. Among these universes are:
    • A universe where Nagisa loved chocolate instead of cheese.[26]
    • A universe, or future point in time, where Sae's family was killed. The Sae from that mirror helps the version of herself from the main Magia Record timeline to prevent the same thing from happening.[27]
    • A universe in which Kyubey does not exist and almost anyone can use magic, from where Nanoha Takamachi, Fate T. Harlaown and Hayate Yagami originate.[28] However, this connection was formed with the aid of Shizuku's magic, so Winchester may not be capable of reaching that universe on her own.
